Don't look now -- but Bush is uniting the country
Frightening...

"I hope that in this term," said House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., "President Bush will fulfill his renewed promise to be a uniter, not a divider."

Don't look now, but Bush is doing some uniting.

Notice, for example, the absence of hysteria when the so-called ban against assault weapons expired. Sure, candidate Kerry, on the campaign trail, warned that the expiration of the ban makes "the job of terrorists easier and made the job of America's law-enforcement officers harder." But, for the most part, Kerry did not make this into a campaign issue. Why? Democrats know that, in 2000, presidential candidate Al Gore lost his home state of Tennessee, in part, because of Tennesseans' opposition to further gun control,

snip...

But with whom do the Democrats intend to replace the defeated liberal outgoing Senate Minority Leader Tom Daschle, D-South Dakota? Harry Reid, D-Nevada. Who is Harry Reid? He calls himself pro-life. NARAL, formerly the National Abortion and Reproductive Rights Action League, gives Reid a mere 29 percent favorability rating. Contrast that with Daschle's 50 percent. Reid even supports mining interests against environmentalists.

Whether soon-to-be outgoing Democratic Chairman Terry McAuliffe realizes it, the Democratic Party seems to be shifting toward the center -- Bush's center.

1. Don't get yourself in a thightwad over this.
The gun control law wasn't a very good one! It allowed people to buy weapons that to most of us would be considered assault weapons. It authorized the sale of large capacity magazines as long as they were made prior to the ban...it just didn't do very much.

As to Reid, I guess I'm biased, but I think the Dem position should be Abortion should not be any business of the Federal Government!!! I personally would never have an abortion for any reason, but I don't believe my opinion should be Federal Law.

4. Well, gag me with a spoon and call me Charlie
The Democrats have a pro-lifer in their party?! They MUST be moving to the center.

...only, not. Does Reid as minority leader mean that the Democratic Party is shifting to the right, because he's pro-life? No. Does Arlen Specter as chairman of the Judiciary Committee mean that the Republican Party is shifting to the left, because he's a relatively pro-choice moderate? No. It simply doesn't make any sense.

As for what they call "even more telling," Bush's approval ratings, Gallup has always given Bush high approval ratings when every other poll gave him lower ones. Even if his ratings really have hit the 55% mark, it's almost certainly due to a post-election bounce; voters think he won the election fair and square, he's not illegitimate anymore.

Nearly 60% of Americans think marriage is a state issue, even if they don't agree with gay marriage - they don't want a constitutional amendment.

74% of people are worried about the way things are going in Iraq, only 44% believe the US is winning that war, 49% believe we will not be able to establish a democratic government, and, according to which pollster you listen to, 48-50% thought going to war with Iraq was a bad idea, and 55% disapprove of Bush's handling of it.

I wonder if I should trust a site that has an ad saying "Help continue Reagan's legacy: Take a stand for conservatism" on the side frame. Probably not.

5. Well Townhall is a known RR freak site ...
... so I don't put much store by this one report.

But it's sickening to think that this may be a trial balloon for more "mainstream" Pugs.

Maybe we'll be hearing the same from Fox in a week or so.

Maybe CBS by Christmas or New Year's.
:puke:
