I had the recent displeasure of appearing before the local chapter of Americans United for Separation of Church and State, many if not most of whose members appeared to me to be committed atheists.

The forum was supposed to consider "A candidate's religion. When does it matter?" But the discussion quickly disintegrated into an ugly attack on religion by the godless majority in the room.

By the time the evening was over, I knew how the Christians felt when they were fed to the lions.

Now, I'm no holy roller. I do not expect everyone to share my religious faith. I respect the right of others not to believe in a supreme being.

But what offends me is the contempt that the atheist minority has for the overwhelming majority of us who do believe in God. What angers me is that the atheist minority is waging an unholy war against God, against religion, in communities throughout the once-fair land.

Indeed, California, the modern day Babylon, is ground zero in the war on religion.

I regret I had but one subscription to cancel.

I find it absolutely incredible that you refused to print a James Goldsborough column because you were afraid it would “offend the Jewish Community”, but you willingly provide a forum from which Joseph Perkins can openly insult the 20% of the Americans who are smart enough to not confuse mythology with reality.

Perkins’ column clearly illustrates why so many thinking people all around the world eschew religion, especially the kind practiced by Perkins. Prejudice, exclusion and hate are obviously his core values.

Perkins, as spokesman for the supposedly oppressed Christians--who happen to have complete and total control of all three branches of the federal government--whines that the all-powerful atheists are taking religion from him. Perhaps Perkins could write his next column about all the Atheist holidays (Even the word itself has a Christian derivation.) that shut down the country. Maybe he’d be willing to help get that “In Science We Trust” off the money. He could be a bit more outspoken about those Atheist organizations which protect child molesters.

Perkins prattles on about how retailers and Hollywood have turned “anti-Christian”. Evidentially he hasn’t been in a Wal-Mart or a driven by a movie theater lately. The Christian obsession with wealth, things, and commercialism is the driving force behind Christmas. Of course Perkins, begin Christian, wouldn’t be able to see that from his haughty perch as a right-wing columnist.

From your unquestioning support of George Bush to your incessant Clinton-bashing, you have proven--once again--what many San Diegans have known for a long time; the Union Tribune is nothing more than a propaganda arm of God’s Own Party.
