WaPo LTTE: Ulterior Motives Behind 'Fixing' Social Security
Friday, January 14, 2005; Page A18

Regarding the Jan. 9 editorial "How Much to Cut?":

Shame on The Post for failing to explore the motivations behind the Bush administration's fix for Social Security.

President Bush has shown a blase attitude toward a number of large issues -- playing down massive deficits, failing to fund his education program (if you don't count funding Armstrong Williams) and invading a foreign nation with no plan for reconstruction.

Yet, when it comes to Social Security, we are asked to take at face value his avowed concerns about the impact that small shortfalls might have on regular Joes 40 years down the road.

Alternative, plausible motives -- such as those suggested by the new markets awarded to Wall Street by the president's Social Security plan -- must be acknowledged in any fair and balanced assessment.

and the second LTTE in the Washington Post was on the SS issue, also against it.
