Smart candidates answer the questions they want to be asked, not always the ones they are asked. Hopefully, the Democratic candidate (and maybe even the Green candidate) will take advantage of whatever opportunities they have to point out the failures, lies and contradictions of the past four years. The only response for Bush would be to refuse to rise to the challenge and insist on responding strictly within the parameters of whatever question was asked. That would leave a whole lot of threads dangling in the minds of some voters. OTOH, if the Democratic candidate pushed hard enough, I think Bush will lose it.

9. Debate? If a real debate, no, but

what they do these days is to limit time to 1 minute or so and so all you get is an exchange of one-liners. In this format, Bush can do well because of typical conservative oversimplification, black and white, etc. Bush "debates" are designed around one-liners/sound bites and you can bet the media running the debate will spoon Bush with opportunities to do just that.

People generally don't vote based upon who won a debate. Ask any Democrat and they'll tell you their candidate won. Ask any Repug and they'll tell you their candidate won. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

But we haven't had a legitimate Presidential debate in decades. The current format is essential dual, simultaneous interviews. The people who ask the questions are among the poorest quality journalists in the country, either succumbing to their own inept biases or evading anything but the softest of rhetorical questions. The days of anything remotely resembling the Lincoln-Douglas Debates are long over, and the only real exchange that took place in 2000 was Pacifica Radio's Amy Goodman and President Bill Clinton (a real gem, listen here).

The problem with the debates is that the LoWV allows the candidates themselves (or, to put it better, their campaign strategists) input on how the debates are structured. What we then see is the absolute lowest common denominator of debate formats.
