One of the Daily Show correspondents (Ed Helms?) did one of those fake interviews with their leader. It's a real small-time operation.

7100 signatures?

That's about a weekend draw for one screen around here. I wouldn't worry about it.

10. 7100 Is Nothing -- MM Has Sold MILLIONS!
Bowling For Columbine made more money than any other Doc in history. And more people bought Dude Where's My Country than bought O'Liely, Colter, and Ingrahm COMBINED.

What I mean is: PEOPLE ARE GETTING IT! Just look at the Amazon list, it's The Patriotic Left all the way, yeah!

17. Well, if the old Hollywood adage holds true that
even bad publicity is good publicity, it should make his movie a roaring success. When I was in high school, a movie called "The Moon Is Blue", which had a lot of ribald, sexy dialogue in it (mild by today's standards)caused a big brouhaha because it was released without the Hayes Office approval, the movie censorship board.

All kinds of church groups and othe blue nosed organizations tried to get the local movie theaters not to show it. Well, the resultant publicity made the movie so popular, it made a ton of money and the morality police were left with egg on their faces.

23. 7100 is trivial. The theaters main concern is making money.
Their only question is, "How many people will buy tickets?" They will probably not pay much attention to letters from either the right or the left, as they know that those will be the result of activist letter writing campaigns.

24. Maybe it isn't just the money...
Edited on Mon Jan-19-04 09:23 AM by LeahMira
Their only question is, "How many people will buy tickets?"

Well, "Bowling for Columbine" was only shown in a few theaters around here. I'm in Delaware and the closest theater to me was in Philadelphia. Fortunately, the University of Delaware had a showing a few months later on... which was sold out by 6:45 for a 7:30 showing... and I saw it there. There has since been another showing at the University which was also sold out early on. From what I read at the time, the theaters that did show "Bowling" had record crowds coming in to see it.

The only reason I can think of that mainstream theaters would not show "Farenheit 911" would be a concern about protesters. Even here in Delaware, hotbed of apathy, I imagine there would be some of the far right wing persuasion that would show up. When a local live theater showed a play some years back critical of the KKK, some KKK folks showed up, so I put nothing past anyone. I can certainly understand a theater manager feeling wary of that sort of stuff!

I do hope that at least one theater close by where I live shows the film though. Of course the theaters can make as much money showing some film about stupidity... probably more! But letter writing might be just the moral support and incentive some theater manager needs. So, thanks to the first poster for the links and addresses.

26. Theaters want both Democrats AND Republicans to buy tickets.
A few specialty theeaters can make lots of money by forgoing the mass market and appealing to small, but intense markets. You drove that far to see the film because you ALREADY held those political beliefs and wanted those beliefs reinforced. It is doubtful that any NRA people were in the audience. But after a few showings, the niche market that is going to see it has done so, and ticket sales drop off, markedly.

If the tickets sales at the niche theaters had held up, the mainstream theaters would have smelled the market, and shown the movie. That they didn't pick up the film for general showing demonstrates that there was a lack of general interest.

Most people, myself included, go to movies to relax, be intertained, and to forget about the world for awhile and enter a fantasy world.
And there is nothing wrong with that. We all need to have a life apart from politics.

Theater managers are extremely well aware of these market dynamics. Their job is to make money, not to function as an arm a particular wing of the Democratic Party.

25. That PABAAH guy is an ass
Very deranged.

He runs a site that blasts Hollywood celebs with liberal views that communicate those views. Funny that he feels it gives him the right to express HIS views.

Also draws a really bad, almost homoerotic comic strip about a superhero called "The Patriot", who fights al Qaeda terrorists in Iraq.

Now I've seen pictures of the webmaster, and he looks young enough to enlist in the armed forces and go to Iraq. But I guess words to him speak louder than actions.

I jsut wished that this fool realized that the First Amendment that gives him the right to express his warped views gives ALL OF US the right to express ours.

As Roger Rabbit would say, "What a maroon!"
