Um, did I hear Bush say being gay is a sin?
Edited on Wed Jul-30-03 04:51 PM by Armstead
Did anyone catch that in his press conference?

A reporter asked his position on gay rights, because many of Bush's supporters are against homosexuality.

Mr. Bush smirked and replied: "Well we're all sinners...." (That may be slightly paraphrased, but very close.)

He then naturally followed up with a lot of compassionate nonsense, but that first phrase seemed like the proverbial sore thumb to me. Seemed as though he was putting homosexuality in the same category as other faults and sins people might have

Wondering if anyone else caught it.

21. in context....
Edited on Wed Jul-30-03 06:25 PM by bearfartinthewoods
he said we are all sinners and i would caution those who want to go after the speck in anothers eye before they see to the stick in their own. (or some butchered, bush version of the saying)

i do not like to be mislead. i really don't like being mislead here, by people who are supposed to be on my side. he says enough things that we can tear about without snipping things out of context.

somebody reads this, takes it as the truth of the matter and gets their damn head handed to them by someone who knows the truth.

please.......let's at least be honest with each other!

6. well, it's obvious
that no one could ever use statements like that against Bush. After all, it might make conservatives mad at us.

7. Being a Bush
is also a sin.

He may have tried to look compassionate but then he talked about having lawyers look into codifying marriage as just being between a man and a woman.

to the reporters question about Bush's position on gays. Why isn't the media going after him on that?

10. It's a standard evangelical response
Hate the sin, but not the sinner.

Here's the transcript:

"Q Thank you, sir. Mr. President, many of your supporters believe that homosexuality is immoral. They believe that it's been given too much acceptance in policy terms and culturally. As someone who's spoken out in strongly moral terms, what's your view on homosexuality?

THE PRESIDENT: Yes, I am mindful that we're all sinners, and I caution those who may try to take the speck out of their neighbor's eye when they got a log in their own. I think it's very important for our society to respect each individual, to welcome those with good hearts, to be a welcoming country. On the other hand, that does not mean that somebody like me needs to compromise on an issue such as marriage. And that's really where the issue is heading here in Washington, and that is the definition of marriage. I believe in the sanctity of marriage. I believe a marriage is between a man and a woman. And I think we ought to codify that one way or the other. And we've got lawyers looking at the best way to do that."

13. yo! pantload 'president'

if you believe in the SANCTITY of MARRIAGE

you MUST believe in the SIN of DIVORCE, right ???

you ignorant, hypocritical, faithless, POS

saying NO to legitimizing gay relationships (I care NOTHING about ANY church's approval) is authorizing legislated 'special rights' for *potential* breeding couples and nothing less.

19. I get it now!!!!

Obviously, where this country is headed is straight into forcing "somebody like" him into marrying a man!!!! Well, overturnin' weddeness between men and wimmins,...That's whats gonna happen, ya know, if we let them there homos git their way. Nope...compromise is not a good thing....Like daddy always says..."Wouldn't be prudent to compromise"....

Idiot!

11. Maybe he was implying...
...that he's been a bottom more than a few times...

Hell, I feel pity for the man asked to ride the raging Bush bareback...

I apologize in advance for anyone I might have thoroughly nauseated with that imagery. It was needlessly gratuitous, and I accept full responsibility for implying that George Walker Bush likes to get rear ended by barnyard hogs while smoking crack and killing defenseless baby seals...

20. "Needlessly gratuitous"???
I'll be the judge of that, thank you very much!

{Reads post over again.}

Well, based on the well-articulated standard advanced by the Bush administration anent the weapons of mass destruction possessed by Iraq and Saddam Hussein, I believe it is up to Mr. Bush himself to prove to us that he has never been rear ended by barnyard hogs while smoking crack and killing defenseless baby seals. Without that proof, it follows incontrovertibly and without a doubt that Mr. Bush has indeed been rear ended by barnyard hogs while smoking crack and killing defenseless baby seals.

The question is, why isn't anyone doing anything about Mr. Bush and his predeliction for being rear ended by barnyard hogs while smoking crack and killing defenseless baby seals? What's Ken Starr up to nowadays? This sounds like just the sort of rumor he would be on like a barnyard hog rear ending George W. Bush while Bush smoked crack and killed defenseless baby seals.

And that, assembled masses of DU, is needlessly

gratuitous

16. yes, but...
the INTENT was to link 'sin' with 'gay' or 'homosexual'

i do not accept that being gay is, in and of itself, a SIN

gay people may commit SINS but waking up is not one of them, as * would (and does) directly infer.

it's the legislation of 'special right' for *potential* breeders.

if THAT's the point of all the hetero-positive laws, then failure to reproduce should nullify those rights. right?

15. was the second part a slap at fundies?
The speck in your neighbor's eye, log in your own code phrase.

Was that a message to fundies to look to their own sins?

Or was he just spewing.

17. An attempt at balance
He was basically saying "...but let's not be judgemental."

Which is better than some things he could have said. But the point is that he equated homosexuality as being a sain, a fault...something to be forgiven.

If we had a media, they'd be jumping on that.

22. Sin is not only something to be forgiven
It is something that can be avoided. It has nothing to do with what we ARE, only with what we DO.

In other words, there are no gay or lesbian or transgendered people; there are only people who do gay or lesbian or transgendered sins. Heterosexuality is the default, the norm; anything else is deviant and entails conscious and avoidable choice.

I suppose one could say the same about doing repuke acts. . . .
