Most Ridiculous Line in SOTU
Georgie said that we refuse to live in "the shadow of Weapons of Mass Destruction."

Uh! Georgie boy, we lived in the shadow of WMD's for more than 40 years, from about 1948 to 1990, due to the bombers and missiles of the USSR! We lived under the shadow of an arsenal that not only could have damaged a block, a community, or a city, but the WHOLE WIDE WORLD! (Several times over, at that.)

Somehow, with that spectre looming over us, we became, without debate, the most powerful country in the world. Our economy, productivity, standard of living, quality of life, and freedom to choose became the envy of the entire free world.

So, apparently, the SHADOW OF WMD'S aren't really a problem at all!

They may, however, be a problem for chickenhearted conservatives who hide under the bed for fear the Bogeyman is going to get them. The rest of America, apparently, is brave enough to face the challenges without letting fear interupt their lives.

See what they've come to? They are now trying to get people to fear ideas and shadows. What next, for goodness sake?

2. I disagree
I realize that we could spend the rest of the week debating which lines were how stupid, but the one that got me was when he was trying to justify the invasion of Iraq and mentioned that we had found "weapons of mass destruction related program activities" !!!!! That's 3 qualifiers to WMD's. Hell, a drawing of airplanes dropping bombs on buildings could be "WMD related program activities." I can't figure out is bush is really this dishonest, or is he just stupid and being manipulated by the neo-cons behind the scenes.

4. I like Al Franken's comment on that...
...something to the effect of:
"weapons of mass destruction related program activities"? What does that mean? Coloring books?

5. I don't know about the coverage
you were watching, but when he came to this part, they showed Kennedy shaking his head in disbelief and disgust.

Has there been a comparison done on the WMD rhetoric in his last SOTU address in comparison to this one?

7. We May Have A Tie!
That's pretty stupid too! However, the whole premise seems to be based upon the fear of what MIGHT happen with WMD's. Since this country became profoundly powerful while living under the shadow of what might happen, the whole premise is preposterous.

So, you're favorite line is an extension of that flawed premise. I guess it would have to be equally ridiculous.

3. MADmen fear not shadows...
The only people I knew who were honestly scared of Saddam Hussein were the ones with no clue as to how weak he was (i.e., the Hitler analogies despite SH's lack of industrial base, etc.).

6. For pure left-field pointlessness, it's hard to beat the anti-steroid rant
Why didn't he also speak out against littering, jaywalking and failure to wash one's hands after using the bathroom?

8. I have two.....
I almost fell out of my chair when he said, no one can doubt the word of the United States.... Yeah right... He should have said, no one can believe the word of the United States.

Also, when he said (paraphrasing), we need to set an example that there are not short cuts to success.

Both statements were so ironically untrue, I almost died laughing when I heard them.

10. No Short Cuts! LOL!
The ultimate irony coming from that guy! A legacy who skated his way through school on the wave of legacy grade inflation. A failure in business after business who just kept getting things handed to him to try, try again. A dunce who got to be president.

Apparently, Li'l Georgie, there are some shortcuts. You took every one of them.

9. And Another Thing!
The reduction in deficits to $250 billion in 5 years (oh, is THAT all!) is based upon what?

Well, it would be based upon the estimates of the same people who said that 2 years ago the deficits would be $80 billion, and they turned out to be $210 billion (a 162.5% error), and last year the deficit would be $260 billion when they turned out to be $440 billion, or a 69.2% error. (All 12 month calendar year values.)

So, we're relying on the estimates of people who have already proven they can't estimate these revenues. And he makes an official state speech to that effect.

What a maroon!

14. Speaking of shadows:
That implies a geographic proximity. So naturally the American people live in the shadow of huge amounts of American WMD.

And the people in Europe lived, for a long time, in the shadow of short-range American nuclear missiles, stationed in West Germany, directed to East Germany. Some people in the US don't seem to be too scrupulous to expose others to these risks (not even their own soldiers while testing the effects of nuclear radiation).

16. Is that expressed ??

Is that expressed best

a) Yellow
b) Green
c) Orange
d) Red

threat levels????

I liked Bill Clinton's terrorist prevention program better. They let us live our lives. And they caught terrorists as they were planning to blow up landmarks. We found out AFTER they were caught. Yipee!!!!

It seems to me that Bush puts more emphasis on the APPEARANCE of fighting terrorists. He puts LESS emphasis on actually catching them.

Isn't it great how after Bush cut Air Marshalls, he came out with a proposal to increase "Homeland Security" funding by 6%. Robert Byrd is going to town on this topic on C-Span right now. You just have to wonder which Bush contributor will get that contract???

What I wnat to hear is:

a) Air marshalls on every flight. Passengers will help pay for this. People who don't fly shouldn't be made to 100% of the burden.
b) Air cargo screening.
c) MORE border security. EVERY illegal alien should be treated as a potential terrorist.
d) MORE Coast Gaurd funding.
e) MORE funding for first responder support.
f) MORE money to track down Visa skippers and send them home. This helps the job and housing markets as well.
g) MORE money for Veterans service who fought to preserve our freedom.
