Sen. Robert Byrd: Another classic speech
Byrd was just on CSpan RAGING against the imperial presidency and Republican Bushbot legislators, taped earlier today.

Classic Byrd, speaking about the intentions of the founders to keep the legislative branch on equal footing with the executive, and how BushCo and the Republicas are making a mockery of the system, all to the detriment of the well-being of the American people.

Some excerpts:

•"The people of West Virginia made me a Senator. The day I make a decision on behalf of my political party and not for the people I serve, send me home."

•"Why should we treat the President as if he were a king, clothed in royal purple?"

•"Pres Bush insists that members of his party march with him step-by-step. I remember when Sen. Mark Hatfield stood alone against his political party. He was no coward for doing that. He was a man."

Byrd speaks for history, not for public consumption. He's trying to keep the candle of democracy flickering. When he goes, there will never be another like him.

2. I just finished watching it too,
So, we probably made similar duplicate posts at the same time. We'll let the mods sort it out.

That was the best, most eloquent speech I ever heard in my life. I'm gonna try to find a transcript to print up and share.

That Omnibus Appropriations Bill was even worse than I thought, and I spent half the day yesterday calling Senators about it!!!
