CIA warns of an Iraq Civil War dispite Bush*s SOTU optimistic claims LIES!
http://www.commondreams.org/headlines04/0122-01.htm

WASHINGTON - CIA officers in Iraq are warning that the country may be on a path to civil war, current and former U.S. officials said Wednesday, starkly contradicting the upbeat assessment that President Bush gave in his State of the Union address.

The CIA officers' bleak assessment was delivered verbally to Washington this week, said the officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity because of the classified information involved.

The warning echoed growing fears that Iraq's Shiite majority, which has until now grudgingly accepted the U.S. occupation, could turn to violence if its demands for direct elections are spurned.

Meanwhile, Iraq's Kurdish minority is pressing its demand for autonomy and shares of oil revenue.

"Both the Shiites and the Kurds think that now's their time," said one intelligence officer. "They think that if they don't get what they want now, they'll probably never get it. Both of them feel they've been betrayed by the United States before."

2. Of course SOTU was lies
I could tell by the way the Imperial Lips were moving and words were coming out.

And of course, if there is ONE THING besides fraud and theft that the Imperial Family excels at, it's BETRAYAL.

4. Is anyone surprised?

In iraq you have at least three different and mutually opposed groups. They were held in check by the tyrant saddam. Bush's deposing of saddam almost guarantees civil war unless bush plans on staying there forever and using the same kind of repression as saddam used.

It's really our fault anyway, for supporting saddam when he took power. Iraq was a democracy at the time, but we figured we needed a strongman because Iran was making anti US noises, so there goes another democracy to the american interests.

Many of us here and in washington predicted that an invasion would remove all restaints from the warring factions there. This is the result.

9. You have that backwards.

Actually, the Soviets backed Pan-Arabism against the US backed Persians and Zionists (to put it into the propagandistic terms of the time). Saddam was NOT an American creation. US backing for Saddam did not come until the 80s when Iraq and Iran wasted their resources on each other (and lined our pockets since we were, in fact, backing both sides).

11. CIA support for Saddam began in 1963
http://www.representativepress.org/CIASaddam.html
-------------
e coup that brought the Ba'ath Party to power in 1963 was celebrated by the United States.

The CIA had a hand in it. They had funded the Ba'ath Party - of which Saddam Hussein was a young member - when it was in opposition.

US diplomat James Akins served in the Baghdad Embassy at the time. Mr. Akins said, "I knew all the Ba'ath Party leaders and I liked them".

"The CIA were definitely involved in that coup. We saw the rise of the Ba'athists as a way of replacing a pro-Soviet government with a pro-American one and you don't get that chance very often.
-------------

You are right in identifying anti-Soviet strategy as the justification for the coup that installed Saddam. It is the same type of "reasoning" that led to funding/arming of Islamic fundies that resulted in the Taliban control over Afghanistan and the emergence of Al Qaeda.

5. This isn't news here
DU'ers have said this and worse will be the outcome of this illegal war. This would be the lowest level of disaster if it is just civiol war in Iraq.
However it's so easy for events to spin quickly and completely out of control bringing on regional war, then world war III.

7. Oh, yeah.

Somebody mentioned a corollary between this
situation and Tito and Yugoslavia. Conflict
between the three groups is almost inevitable.

8. Bush has contradicted the CIA
ever since he seized power in the coup of 2000.

This is either a wickedly subtle disinformation/psyops campaign, or is very puzzling given his cabal's multi-generational links with the spooks.

Winston Churchill that created Iraq and split it and Kuwait up? i seem to recall hearing that before, then again it was my old Politics teacher who HATED Churchill and Thatcher. his favourite programme was one of Thatcher's downfall.
