can anybody give me some info
on generators? the thread on what would happen if gas went to $3/gal. made this seem an even more critical move. have told dh for a couple of years now we need to get one, but he doesn't see / refuses to see what's coming for this country. so it's up to me  anyway, it's about a 2,000 sq.foot house (i think). any suggestions? i already work at home/telecommute and we live pretty centrally in this small town so don't have to drive often or far.

1. Do you predict a failure in the main power grid?
Because that is the only time you ever need a generator. Invest in solar now and be ready when the price of electricity increases.

4. laruemtt, there's another advantage of solar.

A properly spec'd home solar system will not only make you almost totally independant of the power grid, it will also make you money. When the solar generater produces more than you use, you sell the excess to the power utilities, so it can pay for itself before very long.

You might also look at http://www.clean-air.org/ as they have some good ideas on energy independance.

3. Generators and Gas
The possibility of $3 a gallon gas is causing you to look at generators? You do realize that they run on gas don't you?

I fail to see the connection you are making between the price of gas and needing to get a generator for your home.

5. I think the poster was wondering if it would be cost
efficient to have a generator if the cost of gas went to three bucks a gallon. It is not just the price of gasoline but of natural gas that should also be a concern.

6. Natural Gas
Well, if the poster has natural gas for heat, water heater, etc... then buying a generator would not address these issues. And the cost to switch over to electric for these, and then run them off a generator would be a dumb financial move.
