As a graphic designer, I look forward each year to watching the creativity behind the commercials aired during the Super Bowl. A yearly lineup of the best that Madison Avenue has to offer. The brightest, the most entertaining and, yes, sometimes the most seriously somber advertisements; as in the Budweiser Clydesdale homage to the Twin Towers.
This year, in response to your decision to boycott the MoveOn 'Child's Pay' ad, I've decided to boycott every advertiser that airs a commercial during this year's Super Bowl on CBS. I can already guess that I won't be drinking Budweiser this Sunday, as a direct result of your decision. And if I'm munching on a Dorito during the game, and a commercial comes on touting same said chips, I will stop eating and throw the bag away. This goes for each and every commercial that graces the CBS airwaves this Sunday. Coors, Lays, whomever. I'll be making a list.
I don't suppose that my 'little boycott' will be of much concern to you. But mark my words, it will happen. And everyone at my yearly Super Bowl Party will be boycotting your advertisers too. Initially by default, and ultimately of their own accord. And they'll tell their friends of the boycott, and their friends' friends will hear of the ban . . .
It really is too bad that your politically biased decision to prop up the worst Presidential Administration in my lifetime, through out and out media censorship, will ultimately be realized in the pocketbooks of your advertisers. It was never about them. You should probably tell them that. I know I will.

. . . the advertisers will blame the bad ratings on the MoveOn fiasco and ask for their money back. That would be good. Although I'd rather see a close game. If enough people join in my boycott of the advertisers, they'll be asking for their money back anyway. :7

However, I don't like football and never watch the Super Bowl so please publish your list after the game so I know whose products to avoid.

watching. But then again, if I were, I STILL wouldn't be watching, in protest of the MoveOn shaft.

it's a long-standing policy at CBS not to allow political ads of this type for the super bowl (or sports programs, in general?).
So, it's their ball, I guess they can make the rules! :)

10. The ads equating drug use with terrorism last year |

were political ads. Definitely to support the war on drugs, which is a crock of shit.

I've been so miffed with MoveOn I don't even read their emails anymore (in an already too-clogged inbox). It's a terrific and very creative idea -- I think I'll watch the SuperBowl just in order to join the boycott!

Yeah. It works for me. I get to see the game and the ads, and make a statement about censorship in the process. Speaking of censorship, I didn't appreciate MoveOn's decision to backpedal on the 'Nazi' ads. My letter to Eli Pariser:
To: "Eli Pariser, MoveOn Voter Fund" Subject: Re: RNC Smear Campaign
I think you're making a mistake not defending these ads. I can't defend your decision to back away from them so I won't be calling the media on your behalf. It seems to me that the ads were created in good faith as a part of your contest and obviously, the sentiment about Bush/Hitler exists or it wouldn't have showed up in more than one ad. Although you did not personally create the ads, I feel that you should be defending the right of freedom of expression for the people who did take the time to create them. And personally, although I did not get the chance to see them or vote on them, I agree with the premise of the subject matter. It's too bad that the democratic party, and you as a major representative of the platform, can't stand up to this obvious smarmy RNC political ploy and point it out for what it is. Another example of the republicans controlling the media, and you . . . behaving like putty in their hands.
Just my 2 cents. ~TYY

15. The 'list' so far . . . |
|
. . . according to information I've been able to gather online:
MasterCard IBM H&R Block AOL Monster.com Apple iTunes
From the snacks department: Pepsi Anheuser-Busch (with 9 spots) Frito-Lay
In the penile dysfunction arena: :eyes: Viagra Cialis Levitra
I'm hoping AT&T runs an ad. I've been looking for a good excuse to switch to Verizon. :P

I am writing as a long time CBS viewer to express my extreme dissappointment with CBS for your network's appalling behavior in recent months.
First, the refusal to run "The Reagans" miniseries because of pressure from the RNC,now, the refusal to run the spot from MoveOn.org.
It was my understanding thst the reason for not running the Move On spot was because of a network policy against running issue ads during the Superbowl. However,I notice you have spots listed for the American Legacy Foundation as well as The White House ONDCP. This fact alone makes CBS a bunch of liars as well as hypocrites.
George W. Bush and the crime syndicate he calls his administration represent the absolute WORST elements in our society today. The harm they have done to this country will be felt for generations to come.
As a result of CBS's fawning partisanship and bowing to The Bush Administration,The RNC and the extreme neoconservative movement,I am taking the following actions:
1. I am boycotting every product of every Superbowl advertiser.
2. I am contacting every Superbowl advertiser to inform them that CBS is responsible for my boycott.
3. I will use the power of the internet to encourage other Democrats and Progressives to join me in these boycotts as well as informing the advertisers why.
I cannot in good conscience do any less.
Sincerely,
|

I finally calmed down enough to make sense,I think.
