but I still think about Bush's built-in advantages - all that money and a lap-dog press - and get kind of down. But I do feel a bit more optimistic than I did a month ago.

3. I want to be, but am haunted by election of 1984.
Ronnie seemed in serious trouble in Summer of 1983, and I believe that his re-elect numbers were very low.

But look what happened.

Also, repukes are very good at pulling victory from the jaws of defeat. The Dems, however...

8. On the other hand, there was the election of '72.
As we learned in our love letter from PBS last night, Nixon carried all but one state in '72 and beat McGovern by a landslide during the beginnings of the Watergate investigations...and was impeached soon after. I predict either victory in '04 or the above scenario.

21. I never worried about Clinton in 1992.
Even when he was third behind Poppy and Ross. I never doubted for a moment he could pull it off.

But he AIN'T running this time!! We are fresh out of Big Dogs, in more ways than one.

Again, research 1983! You might see some startling similarities with 2003.

26. You missed my point.
Get out of the past.

Focus on '04.

For every negative parallel you can find I can find one that is positive. But why bother? The situation for this election is unique.

And aren't you burying ALL of the Dem candidates a little prematurely?

30. Not quite
If it weren't for Perot who took away repuke voters, Mr. Clinton would have lost.

Given the mindset we've developed against Nader, we should be considering Perot to be a hero for causing the situation that allowed Mr. Clinton to win. And just imagine that, despite doing a number of things that made the pukes happy and annoyed the good people (Firing Jocelyn Elders, NAFTA, the DMCA, the welfare "reform" act that didn't touch the truly wrong corporate welfare....) I can still respect him. That's how cool Mr. Clinton is. And I love Hilary, she's a remarkable woman with courage to speak up and to be herself in a world that doesn't appreciate the value of women. (Oh no? Remember all the bad power jokes thrown her way saying she was the one behind Mr. Clinton and all the others?)

There's a reason the Bushies are constantly in spin mode, and it's because they are not at all comfortable with their political situation. And they shouldn't be.

17. good news today
1. The freeper threads that were posted here today. Showed how Republican supporters are livid about Bush's economic/jobs policies.

2. Bush admin floating the idea of privatizing the post office (more lost votes).

3. Poindexter giving his 3-week (or so) notice.

And some other stuff, too, I think.

6. I am.
I think it is already happening. Bush is hitting people in their wallets, and for all their patriotism and partisanship that is one place you don't wanna go if you want to get re-elected. I only hope we can sustain a victory over two terms because I believe it will take at least that long to undo the damage that the pukes have wrought so far this term, and reinstate our middle class by repealing these trade deals and tax cuts.

I posted the other day that my mom completely floored me the other day by saying she'd vote dem if it were not for one issue she is very passionate about (I won't say which one cause I don't want to hi-jack, it's a divider.) And Bush has completely lost my Dad because of a) the daily deaths of our soldiers in Iraq b) lack of affordable health insurance and c) out-sourcing. He sat and watched with me today as Fritz Hollings preached the anti-free trade gospel on C-span, as this is a switch as he will usually get up and leave the room if a democrat comes on t.v..

It was very scary what Hollings related that ANY job that does not require face to face interaction is a target for outsourcing. This category includes the jobs of everyone in my immediate family. This issue, if nothing else, will light a fire under all but the most financially secure.

12. I'm afraid I'm not confident at all (though I'd love to be wrong).
Actually, it's worse than that: I'm fairly (but not absolutely) confident that we'll lose, in both the short & intermediate terms. In the long term, we'll be proven right: the Republicans will succeed in destroying or enslaving the entire planet.

I basically think that one side's having all the media & most of the money is an insurmountable advantage.

This of course is no reason to stop fighting. And to be sure, there ARE significant positive developments, & many good individuals, & the power of truth, on our side. There is the entire power that mobilized the antiwar marches of February, hovering like an ethereal genie in uncoalesced fashion in the background -- if it somehow could be harnessed & focused, it could rapidly become an irresistible winning force.

Adding it all up, I think the odds are against us -- but they're not 100-to-zero. And in any case must keep fighting, because there's no choice.

14. I am confident we have some great candidates, but...
...I am always concerned that their message will be drowned out in the corporate media circus we call the news.

I fear the debates will be moderated by Tim Russert and will consist of 15 second answers and 10 second rebuttals (tailored for Bush).

I am concerned that tens of thousands of voters (particularly minority voters) will be disenfranchised in key states like Florida.

I am concerned that Bush will do ANYTHING to stay in office. That chills me to the bone.

27. We wouldn't be in this situation if it weren't for 9/11.
It's a typical war-time atmosphere and the bigots and zealots and grinches and Mr. Potters have exploited the deaths of the people that died that day to the nth degree, but every soldier that dies in Iraq is one more nail in W's coffin. We are a young country but this scenario has been present before, in WW2 when the Japanese were interred in camps, the constitution was violated, and although it was a horrible trangression against the bill of rights, it did not mean the death or our country. I think that now that scary Ari is gone the press are closing in for the kill, especially now that they sense that the american public is disgusted with the continuing casualties in Iraq. Once this train of contempt for W. gets rolling it will be unstoppable, especially since the press have been hiding their fangs for almost two full years and are about to burst with bitchiness.

23. I'm worried about the power of "advertising"
The money repukes will have to air non-stop bullshit commercials is daunting. The lies they will spin will turn truth into fiction and vice versa. The Dem candidate will have to be tough enough to face this onslaught of mudslinging crap.

The repukes know that Smirk is an idiot and has screwed things up royally...they can't run on his record of accomplishment. They will have to convince people that black is white and white is black. The media will help them do it.

I have hope that they will be so far over the top with their lies and trying to pretend that Smirk has been competent, that it will just become obvious what a bufoon he is and people will see through it.

Don't forget....Iraq is a ticking time bomb and will get much worse over the next year. That will also be hard to hide, especially as troops start coming home next year to tell what is really happening over there.

24. Confident? Hell no! Hopeful? Yes.
If I wasn't at heart an optimist I probably wouldn't be a Democrat.

A few months ago I had no hope at all and really wanted to leave the country, but due to various personal commitments found it to be impossible.

Now I'm here to fight. I think we should all fight, and we need to fight every day.

This country is in terrible terrible shape. A great crime has happened and most people still don't realize it.

A vital part of our government, the free press, has disappeared, and people haven't realized it yet. Because, well, they depend on the "free press" for their news.

Corporations are now making laws, which means by definition they have indeed taken over the government.

We have a LONG ways to go.

Confident? Are you NUTS?

Hopeful? Only because I believe that MOST people actually want to do the right thing. They need to know what it is first.

29. I think this story in the Wash. Post alludes to that
By Dan Balz
Washington Post Staff Writer
Thursday, July 31, 2003; Page A01
His poll ratings are down, his administration's credibility on Iraq has been challenged and the economy continues to limp along, but everywhere he looked yesterday, President Bush saw reasons for optimism.
Whatever the issue, whatever the question that came his way in his first formal news conference since the start of the war in Iraq, the president had essentially the same answer: "We're making progress." But threaded through that display of self-confidence was another, more sobering message that his advisers hope Americans will accept: "This is going to take time."
His upbeat appraisal across a wide range of problems belied the challenges that have confronted his administration in the past month and the political toll they have begun to take on his presidency. If confidence alone produced results, there might be less for him to worry about.
For the first time in months, there are glimmers of optimism among Democrats, based on their sense that Bush may be vulnerable in his bid for reelection. The energy with which Bush's political team has been attacking the Democrats as too far left to be trusted to run the country suggests they understand that the longer the problems in Iraq and at home fester, the more likely it is that Bush will face a genuine fight to win a second term.

that things will go our way. We do have good candidates, but apathy is the real problem. We might take back some of the people who voted for * in 2000, but it's the ever growing number of people who don't vote that will determine the election.

Things are most definitely non hunky-dory.......and can only get worse unless the collective might of the American people get off their arses and start taking notice.

Yup, Bush could possibly lose an election.......if he decides he has to have one.......fact is .......he doesn't.
