People need to brace themselves for something re: Kerry.... |
|
Edited on Wed Feb-11-04 12:41 AM by KissMyAsscroft
He is going to have to come out in support of the Constitutional Amendment to ban gay marriage. He doesn't have a choice if he wants to win...
Hes going to have to do it right after the primaries and its going to piss a lot of people off and rightfully so.
I urge gay men and women to really think about if they will give Bush another term over this issue. I am just as outraged but under a Kerry presidency things will improve. If you help get Bush elected they will get worse, and that is the bottom line... I hope everyone is expecting this because he really has no choice.
It is simply a speedbump until your rights are recognized, but another Bush term is a BIG BRICK WALL, instead of a speedbump.
Please keep this in perspective.
on edit* Everyone here that disagrees with me should bookmark this page for when Kerry supports this ban. Im telling you, he is GOING to do it. He has to. Not only does it fit with his "manly" image, but it distances him from the "massechussets, gay-loving" label.
If gay rights were drinving this election, Howard Dean would be doing well. Electability is what is driving this election and Kerry is the consumate politician.
Im telling you guys, he is going to have to support it.

This is a war, and sometimes you have to accept casualties to win. If Kerry goes along with it for now, it effectively takes away one of the only social issues that Bush hopes will energize his base.
Kerry should do just as the first poster suggested not only to defang BUsh on this issue but maybe even to force Bush to take an even more extreme position or just to adopt more extreme rhetoric which could of course backfire.
As Democrats we have to start realizing that the Repukes will say anything, and use any wedge issue to gain a political edge, if we want to win (and NOTHING can change for the better without a win)we have to fight fire with fire.
I know that sucks but thealternative is 4 more years of the Chimp.

5. I think you're wrong. I certainly hope he won't. |
|
It doesn't make sense to pander to the people who vote on this issue. We've lost them by the millions and this will only get a few thousand back. On the other hand it would certainly cost a candidates millions more in gay and gay-friendly support. And who in their right mind would ever trade millions for thousands? Well, I mean besides the Bush Administration when it's negotiating a new Halliburton contract.

6. bullshit---no "bush lite" positions |
|
If he comes out in favor of that unconstitutional denial of rights, we might as well have that criminal remain in office than a Quisling Democrat.
I'm not saying I will vote for Bush* (no damn chance) but I'm not playing the "pragmatism" game. Let's see someone lead. Let's see someone EXPLAIN why this amendment is WRONG.
I'm still waiting for the explanation of exactly how gay marriage is going to "destroy" my heterosexual marriage. Really, I'm waiting to hear some evidence. So far its simply a war cry by maniacs.
I get tax breaks and social benefits by virtue of my status as a married woman. Why shouldn't others?

14. Yeah how come the GOP are the only ones who get states rights?? |
|
When you're married they say "by the power invested in my by the state of WHATEVER..." NOT by the US Federal Government, as was pointed out here recenetly.

15. Yes! South Dakota just exercised its State Right to ban abortion! |
|
Maybe when the amendment comes to a vote on the floor, Kerry can just abstain, since "yea" or "nay" is pretty limiting and doesn't really showcase his talent for byzantine sentences that say something that all sides can point to as "his position."

9. Well than I would like for you all to explain... |
|
the fact that every poll show Americans overwhelmingly oppose gay marriage.
That takes away the "fringe loony" arguement...
And gay people have never been able to get married, so what the Constution says is irrelevant.
Im not saying this is right, Im just saying to hold off the anger until we get a Dem in office.
If you help elect Bush, your outrage will simply fall on deaf ears..

Let Bush propose and support the amendment.
The Democrats just need to be prepared to underscore how this non-issue exemplifies how Bush is incapable of properly prioritizing this country's problems. If Bush was the country's "first CEO President", then he was also the first "Enron CEO President", demonstrating a total lack of organization, inability to set correct priorities, and squandering and misuse of resources. And if Bush were running a public company, he'd be getting investigated by the SEC for his fraudulent forecasts.

Bush is gonna go down in part because he supports something that gives a certain group of people less-than-equal rights.
Constitutional amendments don't pass. They couldn't even get the equal rights amendment passed during the height of the feminist movement.
Won't happen.

17. Whether or not it passes is irrelevant.. |
|
what matters is painting Kerry as a gay loving liberal wacko...
And it only works if gay people fall for it. Its designed to offend you just as much as it is designed to pander to Christians...
There are a LOT of crossover voters this season and Kerry's succes is hinging on "electability"...he is not going to do anything to damage that.
He isnt going to give a ticker tape parade, but he will quietly supprt it.
That is my point.
