Uh-OH! I've found a child who has been left behind

Dongola High School sophomore Jessica Lannom, 16, yells at her teammates during a home game at the rural southern Illinois school in Dongola, Monday, Feb. 2, 2004. When Dongola officials said students may be able to transfer to the larger Anna-Jonesboro High School under the new No Child Left Behind law, Lannom applied. But Lannom and 15 of her classmates who also wanted to transfer are still attending Dongola's only high school, and are wondering why a law purporting not to leave children behind in underperforming districts has left them where they are, in an underperforming school in the state's remote southern tip. 1. Now we can't let a little thing like the truth get in the way, now can we?
I mean, why ruin a perfectly good backdrop?

2. Actually, any law
that ranks schools and suggests moving from one to another based on those rankings automatically allows students to be "left behind." Because someone's still going to be left at the lower-ranked school, regardless.

Unless the U.S. wants to fully support quality public ed with $$, with facilities, with training, with materials, supplies, small class sizes, respect for the people on the front lines, and BY ADDRESSING THE ACTUAL REASONS FOR FAILURE, many children will continue to be left behind.

8. Maybe that's why they're underperforming.
Too much spent on unis, and not enough on the academics.
