How can you talk about global warming...
When I'm freezing my goddamned ass off here in Tampa Bay. I mean, seriously, it's the coldest winter we've had in what, 20 years? I find it funny to listen to people who talk about global warming nowadays.

it is really cold here. Unfortuneately, it's not snowing or anything. But it was freezing today. I think it was like 40 degrees. Now, I know it may not seem that cold to others, but for Florida, it's cold.

you nancy boys! I've lived in Florida all my life and it feels GREAT!!!! :) No actually it been quite cold this winter in Florida but I surely hope you aren't serious about questioning global warming. Your comments sound like those that fundies make who say, "It feels colder than last year... therefore there is no global warming???" I guess scientific research is just too much to ask for them.

Kinda pissed though b/c I was supposed to go rock-climbing tommorrow but its gonna be like 45-50 deg. BRRRRRR!

The Incredible Shrinking Polar Bears

In Canada’s Hudson Bay, a long-term study confirms they are losing weight and bearing fewer cubs as global warming melts away their icy habitat. Is this a preview of what other populations of polar bears will soon be facing?

4. Boston had the coldest January since 1888
Despite what you hear about cold New England winters, Boston has pretty moderate temperatures in January. The average high is 38 and low 30. We had days in the single digits and windchills below zero. It was awful!

Tonight, a part of Mass that rarely gets snow-Cape Cod-is getting buried by a Nor'easter. High winds (40 mph+), coastal flooding. And Boston hasn't had a flake of snow.

5. it's actually global climate change, calling it 'warming' is antiquated
right-wing friendly US jargon. it's a term we need to abandon, because it isn't very accurate and it is easily ridiculed.

global climate change is real and is serious.

watch or read the Al Gore speech/presentation on this issue at Moveon.org. it's good.

How Global Warming May Cause the Next Ice Age...
by Thom Hartmann

While global warming is being officially ignored by the political arm of the Bush administration, and Al Gore's recent conference on the topic during one of the coldest days of recent years provided joke fodder for conservative talk show hosts, the citizens of Europe and the Pentagon are taking a new look at the greatest danger such climate change could produce for the northern hemisphere - a sudden shift into a new ice age. What they're finding is not at all comforting.

35. Do you mean to call them silly?
Edited on Wed Feb-18-04 11:44 PM by tkmorris
I'm serious. The reason I ask is because it is clear to me that you don't know a lot about the so-called "global warming" phenomena, nor the effects that it can cause. For starters it can cause areas accustomed to being warm to experience a change in climate to the colder. It does NOT mean that the entire planet warms uniformly at a constant rate.

For example, do you realize that Great Britain is far warmer than most areas at the same latitude? Ocean currents account for this, keeping the area far warmer than might otherwise be expected. If however, the polar caps continue melting ( it is firmly established that they are melting ), one of the predicted effects is that Jolly Ole England will get a taste of some truly bitter cold due to a dramatic shift in that current.

So let's not call people who speak of global warming "silly". Let's call them..... "informed". It's a more accurate word I believe.

25. The warming bit is only the average
I don't have sources for you (I'm doing a spot of e-bludging while at work) so I'll have to go from memory based on my Missus' climate degree info, and of course for most of it I was doing something else and saying "yes dear" a lot, but here goes.......

The warming bit of global warming is only the average temperature, which is indeed rising. Accompanying this rise is also an increase in the variability at either end of the scale, so while the average is going up we get more extreme cold, extreme heat, and extreme weather in general.

24. This is certainly the last place I expected to see this obvious fallacy.
To all you folks who are obviously completely ignorant of how global warming works, a warm winter or a cold winter have absolutely nothing whatsoever to do with global warming. You arent going to notice global warming it is a gradual shift over many years. The factors that create a particularly warm or cold season operate completely independently from global warming.

Also, global warming refers to the overall temperature of the planet. It will create deserts in places that are now jungles and vice versa. It may actually make some areas colder due to the overal change in the global climate.

What it also says is that their will be more extremes.
As a kicker, if we don't have the scientific answers then we may be into chaos theory as given by Lorenz.

Apply heat at one point, another part gets colder.

Global warming is not a nice gentle increase in the temperature all over the world. It's regional, and it causes storms, freezing periods, nasties like that.

However, it's a beautiful day here, 83F, bright sunshine, and I have a nice ice bucket with a couple of beers sitting by the pool.

33. I'm walking around Orlando in shorts and a t-shirt
and it ain't any warmer around here than Tampa. But that's okay, after the ice caps melt, Tampa will be underwater.

I wish we would stop using Global Warming instead of Global Climate Change. The warming is going to cause climate change, some areas will get colder due to changes in ocean currents--there are studies that point to an ice age in Europe due to the shift of the Gulf Stream.

61. No he doesn't
He doesn't posess this mythical quality called "common sense", he posesses a very real quality called "ignorance". It's what happens when you don't know a damned thing about what everyone is talking about. It usually becomes exposed, as in this case, when one forgets how little they know about the topic and insists upon having an opinion anyway.

Common sense is merely a codeword lazy people think is an adequate substitute for knowledge. They are wrong and so are you. Sorry if I seem testy but that's how I see it.

76. Have you no familiarity with scientific method?
How hypotheses are generated, tested, and verfied?

"Common sense"?!? :wtf:

How about this little gem? You cannot postulate the whole from too small a sample.

In other words: Let's say I am doing a study on violent crime. By mischance I happen to run into 3 robberies and 2 murders on that day. On other days there might be 1 robbery, 0 murders or 2 robberies and 1 murder (in fact, those would be the customary normal numbers)

But if all I look at is that one day, that one snapshot (this one winter in one corner of the world) would lead me to believe the region had a much higher crime rate than it actually did.

You are doing the same thing. Is it deliberate?

63. Your Words
Do not allow a basis for conclusion. Belief is a religious based opinion. If you're feeling on the topic is from a belief then state is as so and not as a scientific principle or basis.
Did you turn around in the the cave from the shadows and see the real figures?

59. Tell ya what
Go read a book. Preferably one that deals with this topic but it looks as if you might benefit from damned near ANY book. Learn something.

I applaud your attitude towards refusing to accept something just because a politician said it. Good call there mate. You need to take the next step however and inform yourself so that you know fact from fiction and no longer need care whether some politician is telling the truth. You'll just KNOW, because you are well informed.

BTW, your deliberate misconstruing of Al Gore's comment re the internet is a dead giveaway. He DID champion the policies that allowed it to grow from it's infancy to the tool you are using now and that is what he was referring to. And ANOTHER thing....nah forget it. Have a smurfy day.

64. I have no idea if you are stupid.
Maybe you are maybe you aren't. You do however seem ignorant of the topic under discussion. Perhaps I was hasty though, I have days like that. So tell me friend, upon what do you base your conclusions that global warming is not in fact a cause for concern?

58. Your Logic
Is flawed.
You are mixing science and politics.
Science has not predicted what will happen. They have layed out the facts and the possible consequences. You are deciding what they have said as if it was a political decision. One plus one equals 2 as long as you accept the rules.

68. Global warming and weather
are two totally different things.

When global warming reaches the tipping point, the weather ain't gonna matter.

..and have one bad winter, that means the years of studies and thousands of climate scientists who have shown climate change is real are all just make beleive?

Just a little narcistic, are we?

Oh look, it's been quite warm here in Missouri. I guess global warming is real after all.
at least by your logic...

75. Paging Mr. Clue, please come to the nearest white courtesy telephone
Ok, so I can understand how to a person who knows nothing about the issue of "Global warming" maybe bitter cold might seem like irony.

However, that's why its usually a good idea to you know.. like, know what you're talking about before talking and stuff. :)

Consider the possibility for instance, that the actual understood long term effects of "global warming" is not simply a global-wide rise in YEARLY average temperatures overall, but also climate change creating more temperature EXTREMES both cold and hot. Also, as elluded to, Global "warming" is a bit of a misnomer. The scientific evidence actually points to extreme (but gradual) global climate change, the major and polarizing shifts in climate that would have extreme ecological consequences.

The fact of bitter cold where you live may really suprise you when thinking about Global Warming. But it certianly doesn't suprise any scientists that actually what's the word... you know.. you know... know something about the issue. :)

77. A simple statistical explanation of GW.
Lets say one half of the earth rises an average of 2 degrees over 100 years. Very, very warm.

And the other half falls by an average of 1 degree. Very cold.

The net result: a rise of 1 degree worldwide. That's Global Warming.

But at the same time, one half of the world is freezing.

78. People don't seem to remember the warm winters we've been having.
It seems like we have a string of warm winters and then a cold snap every now and then. People of course seldom remember the nice comfortable uneventful winters, but never forget the freezing blizzard-y years.

In any event, the point is, on the average, we are experiencing a gradual warming. Its like saying that the fact that you saw a plant grow from a seed and water as a disproof of Newton's 2nd Law of Thermodynamics.

79. annual temperature record for Tampa
Edited on Thu Feb-19-04 07:51 AM by muriel_volestrangler
click on the map near Tampa and find it in the list

Note that over the 20th century, the average annual temperature went up by about 1 degree centigrade, ie about 2 degrees Fahrenheit. Note also you can get a variation of more than 1 degree C from year to year; when you look at the long term trends you see the gradual warming.

Predictions for the next 100 years for the average global rise are from 2 to 6 degrees C - about 4 to 10 degrees Fahrenheit. This will affect different areas by different amounts; the Arctic is predicted to have more warming, which may cause sea level rise and/or the shutting down of the North Atlantic conveyor.

There are loads of websites explaining the science behind climate change; I think Tom Rees is very good.

the local weather.
it's funny how some people don't understand the difference.

81. You're right, it's all a commie conspiracy, go back to sleep.
These pointy-headed librul scientists can't even get their story straight - how could the earth possibly be warming if it's a cold winter in tampa? I guess they just don't understand logic and reason like you do.

83. You obviously don't understand.
If it's hot, it's due to Global Warming. If it's cold, it's due to Global Warming. If it's exactly average, it's due to Global Warming. Don't bother arguing, just accept the facts.

85. Locking--GD rules
Rules to start discussion threads in the General Discussion forum

1. If you start a thread in the General Discussion forum, you must present your opinion in a manner that is not inflammatory, which respects differences in opinion, and which is likely to lead to respectful discussion rather than flaming. Some examples of things which should generally be avoided are: unnecessarily hot rhetoric, nicknames for prominent Democrats or their supporters, broad-brush statements about groups of people, single-sentence "drive-by" thread topics, etc.

I suggest The Environment, Energy and Science forum for this.
