A point to argue against Mel Gibson's brand of Catholicism. |
|
Edited on Fri Feb-20-04 02:40 PM by blm
Gibson's brand of Traditionalist Catholicism is WHACKED. My mother was a longtime member. Those of you who read David Brock's book may recall that his father, too was a member. These people even think the Pope is a liberal tool.
My mother found it in the early 70s through a group she joined in Ohio and a magazine called TFP, Tradition, Family and Property movement.
I posted here some time last year that this group had its origins in the same anti-communist movement in Central and South America that funded the evangelicals during that same time period. It is ALL about using people's faith to support political objectives. A BFEE staple in every part of the world.
It is also known that just as Rev. Moon funded Tim LaHaye (Left Behind) he was also involved in the funding of the anti-communist movements of the late 60s and early 70s.
I am a bit infirmed at this time and not posting much, but, please be aware of this connection, research what you can and share the information, as Gibson's Passion will become very much a part of the politics of division for the next 6 months, at least.

I had posted some links early last year about the TFP and its connection to the anti-communist groups and Moonie funding, but, lost so much last summer during the lightning storms.

4. Thanks...I also remember the Bishop's name was Lefevbre. |
|
I hope that is the correct spelling. I'm pretty certain he was not recognized by Rome.

3. Gibsons theology differs little from Bible literalist Evangelicals. |
|
He said to Diane Sawyer (that WAS who interviewed him the other day, wasn't it?) something to the effect that you have believe all of the bible or none of it. In other words, the 6 day creation account is a historical fact as well as the Noachian Deluge, donkeys that talk, sticks turning into snakes, Manna from heaven, etc.
Those that are either unable or unwilling to see the fantastical stories in the bible as the parables and allegories that they clearly are, are, in my mind, little different from the types of folks that think public stoning of women that don't cover themselves from head to toe is appropriate. Of course, Mr Gibson would deny that stoning to death an unruly teenager in the town square (Per Leviticus, if memory serves) was a good idea, he still insists that the Bible is the infallible word of god and is to be interpreted to the people by the Papacy. Unless, of course, that interpretation is contrary to the way HE wants his beliefs interpreted.
He is a fundie. Nothing else. Nothing more.

The TFP magazines were filled with politically leading articles and stories. I'd wager that that Michael Ledeen was part of the covert group planting those stories about communists persecuting Catholics in Central and South America.
I read those magazines at my mother's house as a teenager and early 20s.

It's worth pointing out that even many conservative Catholics think this brand of Catholicism is nutty.

7. They hated the changes in the church in the early 60s |
|
and reverted back to the Tridentine Mass. They started building their own churches apart from the Official Church in Rome. They also sent money to the anti-communist groups in South America.
These people have NO IDEA they were actually being manipulated by Moon and no doubt, Poppy Bush, when all they wanted was their traditional Latin Mass back. Now, they've turned into religious and rightwing political fanatics.
