Have you questioned your Supervisor of Elections about voting machines?
Have you made them aware of the potential for fraud? Taken them to task.

If you haven't, why not?

1. punch cards, and they feel that they are fine
I think they would rather deal with punch cards, then computers.

Plus the local population around here is relatively low. My last residence I was one out of 95 people who voted.

2. Yes, I called
the election office and spoke with length with them and my husband spoke with someone in the Sec of State office about the BBV. They said they were very concerned about it and were watching it carefully.

3. Only my gov., sec. of state. and reps.
My sec of state e-mailed me and said that the Johns-Hopkins article was discussed at the meeting all the secs. had last week, and they are having another meeting in February and it will be discussed in greater detail then.

I had to forward my stuff to someone else because my sec. is one of the few who doesn't have jurisdiction over elections.

I'll get started on the Sup. of elections on Monday. As I am fairly new at this and not all that computer literate, does anyone have any talking points that they feel work well? Any input would be appreciated. I have all the articles, and for the other stuff used Dagmark's draft letter...

4. Punch cards & I've got a question here
The last time I contacted the city, county and state was to try to get a drop box somewhere besides the POLICE STATION!!!! We have mail-in or drop off your ballot. The only drop off within 30 miles any direction is in front of the police station. Want a new ballot? I guess you have to make sure and make any mistakes days before the election or drive 60 miles to get one on election day. And nobody cares. Don't you think dropping off a ballot at the police station might be intimidating to some people? They said it was for security, but no other little town has the police station as the only drop off place. What do you guys think?

5. I'd say you're kidding, but I know you're not. It's very
possible that this is a violation of the new HAVA rules just based on access to voting for disabled people, no, I know it is, I thought the point of HAVA was for everything to be automated by '04, although parts of it have been extended to '06. I think everyone should read their states HAVA compliance plan and see what changes are planned and by when. I like this better than just reading the HAVA plan itself because, on mine (NC) at least, it gives a graph for every section of HAVA and tells whether the state meets the standard and if not, when they have to comply by.

6. Thank you
I'll do that and try to find something new and take another go at it.

It seemed to me even the old system violated the Federal law for sure because you couldn't get a new ballot on election day. How can you fix a spoiled ballot if you can't reasonably get a new one?

And I discovered some kindred spirits down the street, so I at least have some back up on it this time. They're a couple in their 60's and have had anti-Bush and anti-war signs out in their yard for months now. People steal them, break them, spray paint them; and bless their hearts they just paint up new signs and stick them right out there again. I'm sure if I could find something in the law, they'd be able to help get this changed.
