1. oh man, i think we might be screwed |
|
I use MBNA too (have a cool linux fund mastercard), and I didn't know the details.
but I'd imagine that we're screwed regardless. I think the entire industry gives to republicans.

2. Do you belong to a Credit Union? |
|
They offer Visa/Mastercard and it's usually a better deal than you get from the big banks.

3. how about "working assets" |
|
Edited on Fri Feb-27-04 10:42 AM by ms_splash
try "working assets" or something similar that makes donations to causes you can support.
credit unions can also be a very good alternative
stay away from company or store cc that are actually mbna or citibank

21. Yeah, that was a big bummer. We had an MBNA card for a long |
|
time and I cancelled it in 2000 when they were just "a" major bush* contributor, not "the" major bush* contributor. I switched to WA phone service and was very disappointed to find MBNA supplied their credit card. I called and asked about it and they said it is difficult to find someone who will work with their program. I said I would get a WA card as soon as MBNA was replaced. However, I think there may be a better way. Instead of cutting and running away from MBNA, if we engaged them and signed up and ran as much as possible through their card AND paid the balance in full each month, that would hurt MBNA's bottom line. Credit card companies want people to be able to pay their bills but carry a balance too. That's where they make their money. Finance charges and fees. If 30,000 DUers signed up and ran just $100/mo and paid it off in full, that's $3,000,000 of THEIR money we get to "play" with each month!
I'll have to think about it some more.

Hadn't thought of that. Hmm....
Oh wait, here's a possible snafu: don't they also get a cut of the merchant fees that stores have to pay in order to accept credit cards?

Guess why stores are so hot on you holding a store credit card? Store credit cards don't come with transaction fees.

29. Yeah, I believe there's a 2% charge to the merchant. |
|
So for "loaning" each of us $100 for a month mbna gets $2. Just make sure you use it at progressive/liberal anti-repuke type businesses!

4. Check your union, credit union even |
|
the DNC is getting into the act. Which means profits go to the organizations and the causes you support not looped back against your interests while picking your pocket a few times over. Working Assets(Ben and Jerry) allows you to designate where the profits go and they have a card. Phone services too. The more you can opt out of supporting corporate hogs the better.
Wachovia, a First Union Bank credit empire dared to lecture American workers to "get over" job loss to India. Just a natural cycle. I suppose the natural cycle also includes their studied tax evasion(they pay zilch) where our tax money actually subsidizes them in the form of rebates! We can't seem to make our government rein in these crooks so look hard to take your business back to the people- and make that something Wachovia will just have to "get over."

26. Our organizations aren't banks of course |
|
but just as the unions becoming shareholders puts them on the internal battleground to force social responsibility so too does the use of liberal organizations force the banks and the flow of money away from pure profiteering against our interests. Let's face it. The More money that gets delegated the more you have to oversee it in an era of compromised government. Can you trust Ben and Jerry forever? The AFL-CIO? Remember what happened to other bloated advocacy groups once infiltrated or grown hidebound and compromised.
It is the sign of an aware and active populace added to a shifting of funds away from the pyramid game that is the double kick. Easy to do at first but you have to keep at it critically. I would be nervous if some of the cards became huge banks moreso than if they effected begrudging social awareness on the part of existing banks(with an eye to counterattack and corruption of course). Meanwhile the more that fight back by switching the more the balance will be affected. Working Assets giving phone calls to Congressman free is something you won't see AT&T doing.
Our credit union uses banks for qualifying home mortgages, but everything around that is consumer friendly or else and the money serves the membership.

and we've gotten a bunch of free trips out of it. $35 annual fee, interest rate competitive (though we pay it off every month so that's no biggie for us.) We use if for just about everything, including son's college tuition, to rack up the miles.

15. With more than 5,100 MBNA "branded" cards to chose from! |
|
With more than 5,100 endorsed programs to select from, MBNA has a credit card that's right for you.
I wonder if MBNA will be the company behind the DLC card?

17. Vote With Your Wallet |
|
There is some merit to the idea of a revolt against King George in the form of economic boycott of his "enablers."
Even if MBNA's business was hurt 10% it would definitely get their notice. Why should we contribute to re-elect *.
The key would be to cancel the card on the phone and TELL THEM why you are canceling.
This is the most powerful vote that there is.
This is also why it is idiotic to watch Faux, MSRNC, or visit Sludge. We only put money in their pockets so they can club us over the head-economic masochism.

its a small one (in arkansas?) with very low rate if you have good credit. Other thing you can do is to pay off entire amount at end of month - that pisses them off - its like giving you free money for a month.

20. Apple credit goes through MBNA |
|
I just bought a new powerbook and my first bill came from MBNA. Good thing I got 6 months same as cash. I'll pay it off early and owe them not a dime!
I'm calling Apple about this, since they contribute heavily to Dems!

I would advise you dump the MBNA credit card but don't be surprised if they continue to bug the hell out of you. I have asked them repeatedly to leave me alone - after they opened an account WITHOUT my permission - and they continue to bug the hell out of me! Perhaps you can get a credit card through your bank or select a credit card based on incentives (i.e. I have an automotive credit card) good luck!

27. Unless you have a job that requires you to have a card |
|
Cut the damn thing up and stay away from credit cards. I've never had a card in my life, and have never missed it. If I need to order something, I send them a check. If I need emergency money, I carry it. If I need to rent a car, I go with a local agent.
Quite frankly credit cards are the biggest sucker bets in history. Paying money for the privlege of spending it. Geez think about what you could do with that money your saving on interest payments. And if you don't have money for that new whatzamahoojit, well wait, and save your money until you can afford it.
I realize that there are some people that are almost required to have a credit card, due to work or lifestyle. But the vast majority of Americans could do without out the damn things, and we all, individually and collectively, would be better off.
