Why did Howard Stern get fired from CC?
People have been making it a decency issue. Here, it has to do with his anti-Bush Political opinions. I do agree with him about the fascist right wing media. I am no fan of him, and he said some things about Columbine that really upset me. But this seems wierd.

1. Didn't hear it
as I don't listen to Howard. I'm sympathetic, but he does grate on me.

Evidently it was a caller, who called * a nasty name. Not Howard or his staff. But I have a feeling in this climate of intolerance, that was just the proverbial last straw on the camel's back.

CC is just trying to get ahead of the new, improved, and more fashionable "decency" curve.

I'm sure someone here has the exact info.

5. That is so stupid.
He has said some things that I have found offensive but god. Over Bush. Of course Clear Channel sucks.

4. Howard was dropped, not fired by CC. His employer is Viacom
Edited on Fri Feb-27-04 12:19 PM by rocknation
CC was perfectly happy to put up with Stern's "indeceny" (and its ad revenues) until he starting trashing Bush. The Superbowl Boob incident was a red herring.

6. Howard Stern is a libertarian
I am not buying the whole "political viewpoint" idea, its all because of the pressure from the FCC after the Janet Jackson thing. Somebody on his show made a racist remark, Clear Channel got scared and pulled their airing of him.

9. a caller made a racist remark
Not anybody on Stern's show... in fact, Stern said he didn't agree with the caller.

This type of thing happens on his show almost daily... a caller slips through the cracks and says the F word, the C word or something racist or homophobic.

While I haven't listened in months, I can't imagined it changed since the JanetBoobGate and this was the very first time it happened since then!

7. Howard Stern got "Dixie Chicked" by Clear Channel
His suspension came the day after he mercilessly criticized George W. Bush, Michael Powell, and the Religious Right.

11. Howard Stern DID Get "Dixie Chicked" By Clear Channel
I think that Howard Stern's alleged "indecency" was only tangential to his getting dropped by Clear Channel. Clear Channel does favors for the Boosh regime, and by dropping Howard Stern, CC helps make the Boosh regime look good to Religious Rightists and other right-wingers.

I personally think of Clear Channel as a for-profit propaganda arm of the Republican Party.

15. "Bush must go" and he (Bushitler) is "a little monkey"
is what Stern said, among other things. So they used whatever handy excuse they could.

14. Great essay.........

I think that once the fire was turned up by the FCC and the 'public', Stern's bosses looked around and figured they'd sacrifice him to look like they were 'doing something' to stem the tide of indecency in the Media; he's an easy target.

I don't wholeheartedly agree that he was censored because of one morning's attack on Bush....I still think that money is behind everything that companies like Clear Channel and Viacom do, and Stern is making too much of it for them to want him gone.

18. Free Speech's Loss is Radio's Gain
Sorry, can't stand the man. Except for 3 minutes in his entire "private parts" movie, I don't think Howard is funny.

Nevertheless, if he was canned for having the wrong politics or to curry favor with FCC political apppointees, then it seems unfair and unbalanced until Michael Savage is taken off the air --that guy's actually more despicable than Stern.
