Gay Marriage Admentment......Never Happen |
|
Even if G.W would win (god forbid) their is no chance of getting 2/3 of the Senate and House + 75% of the states to enact the amendment. Those are the requirements to amend the constitution. This is a political year stunt to reconnect and rally the religious right to work for the Bush campaign.

of Bush the Elder's campaign to add an anti-flag burning amendment to our Constitution. They both created a non-problem and an extreme solution purely to create a political diversion from the real issues.

7. I'd like to agree but... |

..I learned a long time ago to never underestimate (or MISUNDERESTIMATE) the power of stupid people in large groups. especially thier power to f%ck up other people.
The more reaction there is and the quicker the momentum builds, the more likly to happen - consequently, time would defuse this problem as people started thinking rationaly again.
but even if the ammendment doesn't have a chance in hell of pasing, the back lash will still be ugly. This is the kind of atmosphere that bashings take place in.

I hope it won't pass and I've had a rather long discussion with a friend who thinks there is no way it will. I'll say here what I said to him. The Defense of Marriage Act passed under Clinton's watch passed the House by a vote of 342 to 67 and the Senate by 85-14. Both of these numbers are obviously well in excess of the 2/3 needed. Also of the 38 states that would have to ratify a constitutional amendment guess how many have passed the Defense of Marriage Act? That's right 38. Also it must be remembered that a constitutional amendment is not put to a popular vote but rather is ratified by the state legislatures. So even if the people supported this amendment, and it appears the vote would be close, we don't get the chance to vote on it anyway. Now I ask you do you think that state legislatures are more or less right wing now than they were in 1996 when the Defense of Marriage Act passed? All of the above facts lead me to believe that this stupid amendment will most likely pass. My great hope is that maybe the Senate will be able to stop it. Amending the Constitution is usually reserved for the purpose of extending rights not denying them. The amendment that put Prohibition into effect is one of the few times that an amendment took rights away and after a little over a decade cooler heads prevailed. I hope thinking individuals in Congress will block this amendment but I'm not holding my breath.
