Howard has no spine. He indeed does have a lot of loyal listeners. If he in anyway shows an impact I guarantee his tune will miraculously change and he will stop bashing bush.
Remember, he credits himself for getting Pataki elected and Whitman named a restroom after him. Did I say restroom, ops rest-stop.

There is no need to ban him in the solid repub or demo states, only in the key swing states. I hadn't thought of that.

50. Well he was banned in some CA and NY cities |
|
which are mostly Dem... but Rove also said that he wishes to put CA and NY into play in 2004 so that the DNC has to spend money in those states.
He was also Banned in KY which is a state that might vote for Kerry.
So all of the states Stern was banned by clear channels is very curious.

Infinity executives have a fiduciary duty to their stock holders to make money. If Stern makes them a lot of money he will not go anywhere. He knows that. This is all just a grandstand by him doing his (don't f**k with me thing). The six stations he was on for Clear Channel had no financial impact on their bottom line. In fact the stock went up the next day.

We have one of the few remaining independant rock stations, Stern's original home, WCCC. Not only are they continuing to run Stern, but now their own self-promo spots are very anti-Bush, all throughout the day. They run very stern ('scuse the pun) ads with a deep-voiced announcer proclaiming "THIS IS NOT AMERICA!" and railing on about censorship and how much the Bush admin is out to ruin the country. This is the largest station in Hartford, and Sterns audience is the very Nascar white-boy types Bush thinks he's courting.
I think this could prove to be a disaster for Bush. At least I hope so.

I've listened to him since 1982. You may hate his program and thinks he's just a misogynist jerk, but actually he's a very smart but mainly apolitical man who figured out his audience and gave them what they wanted. He was politically incorrect before Bill Maher decided to get on that band wagon. Howard took on everybody including himself, and I'd be driving down the road with tears of laughter running down my face. (And I'm a woman).
I really believe his eyes have been opened now. Politics has hit him square between the eyes and he's not the kind who'll lay down under this kind of assault on his and our liberties. The Bushistas picked the wrong guy to mess with.
And BTW, he saw through Dennis Miller years ago, long before he went over to the Dark Side.

I can't stop. Help, Help, Help!
If my memory serves me well (which it usually doesn't), the reason he "saw through" Dennis Miller was because Miller wouldn't discuss his sexual behaviors with his wife on Howard's show.
Miller is an idiot, however, as always Stern got it right for the wrong reason.

17. You again "The Lawyer" |
|
Can't you make your own arguments. Stern has been using that tired old line for years.
Trust me on this I don't listen anymore. I listened for about 20 years on and off. I was a huge fan at one point. I got tired of defending him and he just stopped being funny. I always thought he was a hypocrite, however, I liked the show and shrugged off his racist and misogynist gags. I also used to like his on-air vs off-air arguments about family values (that argument doesn't work anymore).
I have answered all of your questions. It's time for you to pony-up bud! Let me ask you some questions "Mr Lawyer":
1) Do you like his show when he brings on the KKK guy?
2) Do you like his show when his misfits are comparing the size of their penis?
3) Do you like listening to him beg Heather Locklear to take off her clothes?
4) Do you like listining to men fart?
5) Do you really like watching woman vomit on men?
If you answered yes to one or more those questions you and I will have to forever agree to disagree.
Have a nice life!

2) Do you like his show when his misfits are comparing the size of their penis? I love it because it's pretty damn funny... I can't help it if some idiots out there get offended by Penis jokes....
3) Do you like listening to him beg Heather Locklear to take off her clothes? Love it cause I'm right there begging that she does too.. I can't help it if some idiots out there get offended by a naked Heather Locklear....
4) Do you like listining to men fart? I love it... Ya ever hear the dudes he brings in to fart to music... I can't help it if there are some idiots out there that go ape shit over a fart sound.
5) Do you really like watching woman vomit on men? I never saw it before.... I can't help it if some idiots out there think that I can see what is going on in Howards studio... It's radio!

Howard Stern has been disgusting and rude for years. I used to listen to him on my commutes in the morning. He got a little too much for my taste. The point is he has always been the same and no one said boo until he started bashing Bush. If you do not like Stern, don't listen, but when the govt prevents you from listening to Stern because they don't like what he says, there is where I have the problem. Censorship in all its glory.

|
We have always had censorship. You can't say fuck on CBS, NBC, or ABC. Is that censorship? The radio bands are licensed by the govt and the FCC will censor obscene behavior on public channels.
I keep hearing the solution is just turn off the radio. It's not that simple he broadcasts on a publicly licensed channel. I like to drink and I like to drive but I can't do both at the same time because I will be fined or worse loose my license (is that censorship?). The govt has given me a license to drive and there are certain rules I have to abide by. If he did his broadcast solely on a private pay-for-view medium then you would have a strong argument. The Larry Flint argument was censorship. The govt was trying to stop a private business, that was not licensed on a public channel, from publishing and selling and it's material. The supreme court did the right thing in that case.
I dislike the current bunch of thugs that are running our country as much as anyone on this board. However, this is not about Howard and Bush (as much as he makes it to be). He has been whining about the FCC and Presidents for years and the FCC has been fining him for years. Infinity is not going to take him off the air if he is making money. If they start to loose more than he makes he will tow the line (trust me). In fact as soon as Whitman and Pataki have their first sit-down with him this will all be over.
This latest incident all started with the super bowl and Janet Jackson. Clear Channel took an easy out that had no financial impact on them. Howard is just flexing his muscles to show the world how powerful he really is (and he is very powerful). That doesn't make him right.
IMHO, As appealing as it might sound, Howard swinging the vote against bush, I think I will have to pass on him being the poster boy for our freedom. He is the wrong guy, with the wrong message and the wrong argument. This is not a criticism of anyones else's opinion it's just my opinion!

.... laying it all out. That Clear Channel is connected to Bush* and that is why he got canned. How if the FCC decides to fine him they can run him off the air if they really want to. Questioning why the FCC under Bush* and Powell is allowing media consolidation and how that is bad for free speech. Questioning why a foreigner (Murdoch) gets special treatment to allow media ownership.
Sure he's playing it up for "publicity". That is his job. Even so, most of what he is saying is spot on and the things you would read here for years.

I listen to the part about politics and turn off the smutty stuff. No biggie for me. The interesting thing about all of this is how the Bush supporters are calling into the show and he is hitting them between the eyes. Stern is forcing them to take sides and most Bush supports never in a million years thought they would have to choose anything complicated like free speech and Republican mass marketed values. You can almost hear the pain in their voice when they are trying to help Stern by telling him all you have to do is lay off Bush.
This is good actually. They don't feel a bit of pain for anyone dying in Iraq but it bothers them that they might lose Stern. I'm going to listen most weekdays between 7:00 to 8:00.

Although I am actually a former Stern fan (I stopped listening after he went war-crazy after 9/11), I think you may be right despite hoping its not true. He does tend to back down when trouble starts to invade into his personal life (like when he dropped out of the NY Governor race because he had to make his tax records public). Howard has a good life. He is wealthy, has a lovely girlfriend and can retire and live an enjoyable life producing shows and movies.
I hope he fights to the end and launches a full-on-attack on Bush and the Repugs, but I tend to believe he will retreat once the thugs in office start turning the screws, because he doesn't see the need to become a martyr. I'd probably do the same.

At the risk of being attacked by my lawyer friend again.
One time on his show (more than 5 years ago), Richard Simmons starting talking about Howard's art collection in his house. Howard literally hit the delay button. He doesn't want his listeners to know how rich he really is (he is just one of the guys).
My greatest wish is that one of his competitors do a dial-a-date with Allison!

... I agree with you here.
Number one, Stern has been talking about not renewing his contract for a year or two. (I think it is up in a year or so). Now, this could just be a negotiating ploy, but I'm not so sure.
Since he got divorced and is now single, he has more of a life. He has mentioned many times how tired of getting up at 4:00 AM every day. Who wouldn't be. He's been doing radio for 20+ years, and created a successful movie. If he left radio, he could party like the rest of us and work on TV or movies, and I really doubt he needs the money.
I don't really see Stern backing down. I know lots of people here don't like him because of the often puerile content of his show, but I've listened to him a long time and believe it or not he does have principles. If he were planning on rolling over, today would have been the day since he was told last night that the FCC is working on a case.
Today later in the show, a guest who is a rabid dumbass comedian was dissing Kerry. Stern called him on it over and over. He did kinda make a bit out of it, because Stern never forgets that his main job is to entertain his audience - but all said and done he put up a pretty solid defense of Kerry against the dumbass comedian's charges.
Not to beat a dead horse - but there is no other single media personality I can think of that could change hearts and minds like Stern can. Remember that before you write him off :)

I don't believe he is the sexist or racist that many people on this board accuse him of being, and his co-host is perfect counter-example of this. However, he is a regular, selfish kind of guy who has to think of his own best interests. The fact that he feels its already too late for him and that his radio career is over might be what is driving him to employ a "scorched earth" policy of slashing and burning as much of the current Administration before gets shut-down for good, but you heard him falter for a second today: He said he was considering just dropping the whole thing and laying off of Bush because it would just make his life so much easier.
I don't blame him. We all just want to get through life with a paycheck and relax after work.

I don't know anything specific, but considering how hard-core they've gotten, I'd be surprised if she's in their best books, or vice-versa. Anyway, as pointed out above, Stern's ego--like that of any celebrity--is a force to be reckoned with. If he thinks he's been dissed, he will continue to make noise, politics or no politics; and it's all fine with me.

If a guy with a howitzer shows up to fight alongside me I could give a crap whether he jerks off while listening to raccoons fart.
Thanks for signin' on soldier. Point that big piece of steel toward the front and LET'S GET THOSE BUSH BASTARDS!

They use every vote they can get.. they aren't afraid to use extremely homophobic christians because republicans are so stupid gay republicans will still vote for them anyway..
While we go around saying we don't want his votes because he exploits minorities etc etc..

I stand by Howard and Larry even though I choose not to buy Larry's Magazines or Listen to Howard's show . (that may change if he is bashing bush though I like listening to that)
I'll fight for their rights and their Readers/listeners rights.
Let the Line be drawn now, before the line is drawn at my bumperstickers , Magazines/Videos , Books, Signs in my front yard ,and T-shirts etc..
and Howard if you are reading this , you have my permission to read this post and my poem in my sigline on the air . :hi:

.... I readily admit that I do listen to Stern (although he does annoy the crap out of me from time to time) but I like to think I'd feel the same way about someone who's show I DIDN'T like or agree with.
Free speech, like all constitutional freedoms, belong to all of us and picking and choosing when to support it and when not to is not how I aspire to behave.
Equality and freedom are not up for compromise. If Stern is "indecent" - all the FCC has to do is define clearly why that is so and Stern will modify his show accordingly. The FCC studiously avoids doing so because that would steal their thunder. This kind of regulatory abuse is not American.

Thats on our local CC owned station. Some lady inhaled a condom and had to have it surgically removed, this bit went on for quite some time. Bob and Tom never have quite the trash mouth that Stern is but their show gets pretty graphic.
Difference? They don't rail on Bush or Repugs all that much but did years of Clinton jokes, music, lewd commercials all about Bill and Monica. Funny...CC didn't have the SLIGHTEST problem with that and the condom story today.
