Former Florida Election Worker Charged

ASSOCIATED PRESS

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) - A former Broward County elections supervisor who oversaw a 2002 primary marked by bad ballots and uncounted votes has been charged with 55 counts of violating election laws.

Miriam Oliphant, already facing a Senate trial for her conduct in office, is accused of not opening polls on time and not keeping them open late enough during the primary.

The Florida Elections Commission levied the charges against Oliphant at its Feb. 19 meeting. If found guilty, Oliphant faces a fine of up to $55,000. She has 30 days to respond.

Oliphant was suspended Nov. 20 without pay by Gov. Jeb Bush, who removed her for "gross carelessness." Voters received bad ballots and inaccurate registration information; some polls opened late and others closed early; some poll locations did not have enough workers; and thousands of votes were not counted until a week after the election.

I tend to see her as attractive, intelligent, and alert. How she views herself is something I have no clue to.

6. I'm a little torn on this one.....
.....Miriam Oliphant is a Democrat and has been accused of some things that were well beyond her control. Case in point, "some polls opened late and others closed early; some poll locations did not have enough workers;" IIRC, hundreds of GOP poll workers signed up and simply refused to show up on election day causing the delays in opening of some polls and the early closing of others. Additionally, the State significantly underfunded her office affecting her ability to get everything from ballots to new voter registration cards printed and distributed in a timely manner to adequate numbers of staff hired and proper training for that staff. This may have more to do with the return of hundreds of ES&S DRE's to their manufacturer and her putting off a decision on committing her county to all electronic voting.
She may not be the most effective elections official in the country but look what she's up against. :evilfrown:

Thanks for the 'heads up' BFITW! :hi:
