Bin Laden is a "cog," Bodansky explains, because there is no such thing as an independent terrorist network capable of significant "spectacular" attacks. "Major terrorist operations," he writes, "are conducted by agencies of states in pursuit of the long-term, strategic interests of the controlling and sponsoring states." Since the Sept. 11 attacks, Bodansky has given numerous interviews in which he maintains that bin Laden "hasn't got a penny" and that attention should be paid to the "states" that are footing the bill for his activities.

It's clear from reading "Bin Laden" that the state Bodansky considers to be the primary culprit is Iran, and that his book is as much an indictment of that nation as of bin Laden himself. In order to provide deniability, the terrorism "controlled and sponsored by Iran" is "run via Sudan under the leadership of Sheikh al-Turabi." If there's a Professor Moriarty in Bodansky's tale, it's Turabi, the spiritual leader and de facto head of Sudan, a baby-faced cleric whose excellent English and cultured manner have lately made him a fixture in TV documentaries about militant Islamism. ("Islamism" -- rather than "Islamic fundamentalism" -- is the preferred term to use when referring to what's essentially political extremism tied to religious ideology.)

Many experts on Islamist movements name Turabi as a significant coordinator of international terrorism, but this "Iran's behind it all" scenario is dicier, which brings up the question of Bodansky himself. A former editor of the Israeli Air Force's official magazine, he is hardly unbiased. He is reportedly an associate of superhawk Richard Perle, a former Reagan administration assistant defense secretary; the Arab-American Anti-Discrimination Association has gone so far as to suggest that he is an Israeli intelligence agent who helped run convicted Israeli spy Jonathan Pollard. This is another accusation that should be taken with a grain of salt, but one that gives a sense of how tricky this terrain can be. (Israel and Iran, of course, are implacable enemies: Iran set up and supports the radical Hezbollah organization, which is based in Lebanon and has battled the Israelis for years. Bodansky asserts that bin Laden plays a leading role in an Iranian-led group called Hezbollah International, which he asserts was established in 1996 at a terrorist summit to promote and coordinate terrorist activities around the world.)

In this book of fixation and mania Islamic organizations and associations such as the Islamic Society of North America (ISNA), the Muslim Students' Association (MSA), the Muslim Arab Youth Association (MAYA), the Islamic Association for Palestine (IAP), and the International Institute of Islamic Thought (IIIT) among other Islamic religious and social organizations were suspect and even fronts in an Islamic Internationale that is out to get Israel. While McCarthy was seeing red behind every shady object, Bodansky was seeing green. Annual conferences and occasional meetings held by these Islamic organizations at which distinguished scholars and speakers were discussing religious, cultural, and social issues --- these conferences in the eyes of Bodansky and his likes were conspiratorial, subversive, and of course anti-Israel! To add octane to Bodansky's alarmist presentations the chairman of the House Republican Task Force on Terrorism and Unconventional Warfare, Bill McCollum of Florida, continued to support Bodansky and even wrote an introduction to his book.

Bodansky had worked for Israeli Air Force Intelligence before coming to the United States. According to one account in the Dec. 1, 1985 issue of the Israeli newspaper Davar, Bodansky, while working as a "journalist" for the Moonie-owned Washington Times, was, in fact, one of the Lekem agents in Washington—controlling Pollard's spy activities. Bodansky, according to Israeli sources, was dispatched to the United States by Moshe Arens, to obtain U.S. technical secrets that Israel desperately needed, to complete work on their Lavie jet.

Bodansky insinuated himself in the U.S. right-wing Zionist circles, centered around the Jewish Institute for National Security Affairs (JINSA), where he worked closely with Richard Perle, Stephen Bryen, and Michael Ledeen. Bodansky was hired in the early 1980s as an "outside consultant" to the Pentagon unit headed by Perle and Bryen, which specialized in military and dual-use technology transfers.

Bodansky, in addition to his "employment" by the Moonie Washington Times, also was a partner of Washington Times editor-in-chief Arnaud de Borchgrave and British spook John Rees in Mid-Atlantic Associates, a small "think tank" that was bankrolled by the Anti-Defamation League of B'nai Brith and by right-wing moneybags Richard Mellon Scaife.

The CAUSA-ISC held a second conference in Tel Aviv between Oct. 19-21, 1986 on "The Soviet-Syrian Alliance and the Security of the Middle East," where, once again, Churba, Bo Hi Pak, Eytan, and Bodansky shared the podium with such figures as former Israeli military intelligence chief Yehoshua Sagui.
