i'm afraid to put anything 'political' on my car......are you?
i used to boast a clinton/gore bumper sticker, and a peace sign, and an 'impeach bush' sticker, and i always seemed to get periodically vadalized. keyed, spit on the car, obscene words in magic marker, and of course, yelled and given the finger.

i stopped putting anything at all on my cars a few years ago.
am i a chickenshit? things are getting really heated this year politically, and the pigs are riled up good, cause they know they could well lose this november, and that makes them dangerous.

and after reading mari's post, i am a little bit concerned.

2. You need to decide that for yourself... depends on where you live...
But, I put this vanity license plate on my car last August in a fairly conservative area of Mesa, AZ, armpit of the Valley of the Dumb.

It's bringing out the ABB folks. I've had nothing but positive response to it. I'm actually starting to think that people are nervous about expressing anti-Bush sentiment because of the threat of the right wing. But, there are many more of us than I thought.

3. My boss is a rabid pub, and I'm scared to put a bumper sticker on my car.
I honestly think I would lose my job. Not for that of course (sarcasm) but something could be drummed up. Nobody wants to lose their job - especially in this Bush economy.

76. If you live in an at-will state,
you can be fired for anything. If your boss doesn't like the color of your shirt, the tone of your 'good morning' or just feels cranky, you can be fired at any time, for nothing at all.

These laws need to be changed. Workers need more protection than this.

Im concerned I will get some right wing mechanic who would fuck w. the car somehow..not something fatal, just screw up something to cause me engine trouble. Im not mechanically inclined so I would never know about it....or whodunnit....

I might put this "This Year Im Voting Democratic" sticker on my car tho, sort of to make folks think Im just a pissed off GOPer...thats actually a pretty good thing to put out there...that even people who on other years might NOT vote Democratic would be voting "Democratic" this year.

They can beat us. They can oppress us. They can kill us. But they can't make us fear them. Only we can choose to fear.

I'm living fear free. Come on in, the water's fine.

9. Someone here once shared a trick they use.
Basically, you get a blank sheet of that flat refrigerator magnet material...I don't know from where, but I imagine it's the kind of thing they have at craft stores...put your bumper sticker on that, and trim it to fit. That way you can take it off when you park and are vulnerable to keying.

Why would you be afraid of doing this?

My daily driver is black and white, and has nice, shiny red, blue and amber lights on top of it, so that does give me something of an advantage.

My two other cars have no stickers on them, but then, I don't try to make any political statements other than when I'm speaking in a political context.

22. Citizen, if someone tried to key the car I drive most days.....
There would be, shall we say, appreciable consequences proportionate to their actions, dependent on their reactions to my verbal commands.

I'm not a Democrat, I'm not a Republican, but, in this almost laughably realistic situation, you better have a guardian angel if you actually attempt to carry out vandalism on a police car.

Unfortunately for me, it's almost exclusively independents who attempt to alter the first layers of paint on my ride.

Who'd a'thunk it?

14. I am, but not so much about anonymous retribution.
I work for an organization that, at least in theory, aspires to be genuinely apolitical. That's not real in practice, of course -- it's pretty conservative in many ways. I worry about offending customers and therefore endangering not only my job, but the jobs of others, so as far as my vehicle is concerned, I keep my opinions to myself for the most part. My car is paid for, and if I worked for a private company and didn't have to worry about endangering my employer or my job, I probably would put at least a campaign sticker on. In this economy, though, I don't want to be out looking for a job because I got fired for doing something that damaged the reputation of my employer (however stupid it might seem, from somebody else's perspective, that it might be said that a Kerry sticker on my car might damage my employer's reputation; it's a realistic response I'd expect if I put on one there).

Hubby still has his Dean sticker on his car, has had it on for the best part of a year, and nobody's ever bothered it either on our street or in any of the places it's parked. I live in a place that's about 50/50 in voter registration, though, and apparently there are plenty of people -- some of them retired military -- who are disgruntled enough about the direction of the country, we're far from alone.

Now, do I worry more about it in today's political climate than I would have worried about it four years ago, all other things being equal? Yeah, I do. I don't think you're a coward. We all have our reasons.

I have my DU sticker on my car and have had nothing happen. Mainly, I think, because the Repubs here are really, really scared that their slavish devotion to Bush and the repub party was, well, the undoing of the nation they profess to love so much. Underneath a lot of the yahooism in VA, there is a core of true conservatives who has been getting pretty angry over Bush's antics.

69. Welcome to DU! I've still got my Dean for America sticker on my car.
Plus my little peace sign in the corner and my "War is Not the Answer" in the middle. I see quite a few of those driving around, still. Mine is sun-baked and puckered and aged. I'm proud of it and won't replace it - a testament to the length of time it's been there - well over a year now. When I see a REALLY good one on a parked car, like "Impeach bush," I leave a thank-you note on their windshield. I once saw an elderly man approaching his car and I gently and carefully approached him. He looked at me with some fierceness until I told him I REALLY appreciated his bumper sticker and thanked him for making my day. It was a Kucinich sticker.

29. Don't be afraid to enter into a dialog about politics, whether it's
on your bumper or anywhere else.

These are contentious issues, but if we can argue sports or movies with our friends and neighbors, we should be able to defend are views on liberalism without getting into fights.

Dialog is how we're going to win hearts and minds.

I think that confrontation over politics is something propagated by the right, not because they're actually angry, but because they know that reasonable discourse is how they're going to lose their grip on government.

So, we should all be proselytizers for the left. Don't be afraid. Don't get into fights. But DO talk about politics every chance you get.

79. Right on! Talk everywhere you can! People love it if you make it funny.
The way bad things happen is people are afraid to speak up. Period.

1) Read read read so you know what you're talking about.

2) Wear a button or something to initiate discussion.

3) Don't attack people for not knowing what you know. Share information as if it was a beer or a cookie, generously, graciously and with respect.

4) Treat the person you're talking with as if you are on the same sports team and trying to decide what play to make next so that you BOTH win.

5) Leave space for them to speak, don't just motormouth and rant. Do some listening to see where they are at, what their beliefs and fears are, what they've heard, what they wonder about. Then respond to those interests and weave in information that hooks and surprises them.

6) Smile and laugh during the conversation. It really is amusing.

I have a big IMPEACH BUSH NOW! sticker on my computer bag over my shoulder when I fly to work (showbiz) and it draws people standing in lines with me in airports or at service counters or taxis into conversation all the time.

You'd be amazed how many people have come out of the woodwork when they see my buttons or stickers or overhear me talking to someone else. They frequently say "I thought I was the only one who felt that way!" I give them encouragement and some talking points to use with whoever they talk with next.

36. Not scared, but...
I think it depends on where you live. I wouldn't put anything on my car that could be considered outright insulting or in really bad taste though. I hasten to say that I'm sure you didn't do that.

I'm sorry you have had to put up with vandalism and getting the finger, etc. I hope you reported the vandalism.

I can't imagine any Democrat or any liberal doing these kinds of things to a car that sports right-wing slogans. I'd like to think that means that we are better people.

I also have bumper stickers... mine say "Regime Change Begins At Home" and "Sure you can trust the government. Ask any Indian"... and I seem to attract flyers from the libertarians that are placed under the window wiper when I'm parked in a parking lot.

Maybe in some cases discretion is the better part of valor. What really counts is how you vote, and ultimately how you choose to live.

41. I am not afraid.
I have several bumper stickers. One says "Question Authority." One says "Bush '04: Four More Wars." Another says "Friends Don't Let Friends Vote Republican." Another says "Who Would Jesus Tax?" and of course, one says DemocraticUnderground.com.

I refuse to be intimidated by those facists. If anyone damages my car, I will make a great deal of public noise about it.

I am tired of them thinking they can push us around.

42. I am at a place in my life where I can say, "F* 'em"
I live outside of a military/conservative town, but I have chosen to display several bumper stickers-"Peace is Patriotic" "Islam is not the enemy" "Hail to the Thief" ....but I also put handmade signs "Bush Lied! Thousands Died!" on all 4 windows. My car is a 1990, so I don't care if it gets keyed. 99% of responses are positive, but I do get the finger, too. I hope to instigate conversations among those who see my car...who knows?
My late husband lost his legs in VietNam, then committed suicide 5 years ago. That has been incredibly motivating.

43. Here I am in Dallas driving around with
a bumper sticker that reads, "Show Bush the Door in 2004" and another sticker that reads, "Texas Democrat" and not a SINGLE bad thing has happened. Not one glare, not one middle finger, and certainly no keyings, flat tires, etc.

Now, I expected at LEAST a few glares. Not a one. Instead, I have gotten people honking, then pointing to my bumper, grinning and giving me thumbs up signs.

It is amazing.

I am not going to be afraid to voice my opinion whether it be on a shirt, the bumper of my car or with my voice.

Do it.

45. SCARED? NO WAY - AND I LIVE IN NEW HAMPSHIRE
I keep 4 stickers on my car at all times and rotate them about once a month. I always keep this one, which has an American flag on it, so the freepers know everything I say is out of real patriotism: "It is the duty of the patriot to protect his country from its govt." - Thomas Paine.

I made that at http://www.makestickers.com

Under that I have a sticker from

http://www.stop-fascism.org

which reads "Send Bush to Mars", with a nice Hubble photo of the red planet. Then I have "A nation of sheep will beget a govt. of wolves" - Edward R. Murrow, and then one with an Earth on it saying "There's only one Earth for us". I plan to 'escalate' my
stickers as we get closer to the election. Perhaps in October I'll have two stickers that read: "Bush-Cheney-Ashcroft-Rumsfeld: ... Fascism American-style". That should really piss off the hard core wingnuts!!! I haven't been keyed, yet ;-) but then again I get very few thumbs up either.

47. The decision is of course yours alone, but consider the possibility that
if we do not get rid of these lying criminals, you very well may not be able to afford to even own a car, or fuel for it...or allowed to drive it whenever you want.

I've had a Darwin fish on mine for about 5 years, and a DU sticker for about one - other than the occasional glare no problems which surprised even me here in the buckle of the Babble Belt...(eastern OK)

Don't risk your personal safety if you think it might be in jeopardy but don't be afraid to do as much as you're comfortable with...

48. Not me
I have my "Bush is a Punk Ass Chump" sticker right over top my rear brake light and other stickers scattered around the car. No way anyone behind me can miss them. I have had a couple people try to intimidate me by tailgating or flashing their brights, etc. but I'm an old street punk so in those cases I've stopped in the middle of the road and started to get out of the car then they always take off at a high rate of speed. Cowards.

All the things you list that they do you'll notice is while they are safely in their car or you're nowhere around when they could do them. If you have a nice car I can understand your concern about it being vandalized by the cowards. Mine is a paid for 96 Nissan, decent but hardly a BMW so I'm not too concerned about it.

in a library, at a "stop-n-go" gas station/shop, and goes to college (all part-time). His favorite t-shirts include two of Castro, and one of Che'. I suggest to him that he give thought where he wears them. College=anything goes. The library is cool. But the store is owned by republicans. It's kind of the same with cars. You have to consider not only what you want to express, but also what the reaction will be. I think it's a shame that the left has kind of allowed the right to "own" the flag. My family has a long history of service to this country to make damned sure that doesn't happen. I like the flag.

I added the DU sticker after rush gave us all that free publicity a few months ago.

54. LOL--->love the cartoon.. I used to be paranoid about b.stickers but
I live in a mostly liberal town, so it isn't as uncomfortable as if I lived in say: Idaho EEK

I drive a nice looking car, I'm middled aged, female...I don't "look" like a 60's radical, I'm partially disabled...no, I'm not afraid to plaster the back of my "nice" van with all types of slightly inflammatory stickers.

In addition, I wear homemade "badges" with swap-out style cards that can read whatever I put on them from one day to the next. I proudly wear them into the grocery, the church, around town...anyplace. They are a great conversaton starter, especially when I'm in a less than activist crowd. :)

I can't go door to door, or campaign, so these are the ways I get the publics attention and do my part.

I also noted, at a rally I went to today, that people are making their own T-shirts to read whatever they feel relevant for the cause.
Peace

I agree. I wouldnt put anything on my car unless I had an old car and I didnt care about key marks, broken lights and vandalism. Pepugs preach law and order but will routinely vandalize cars (which is a crime) Also, NEVER put a Peace Sign, Pink Floyd or Led Zepplin sticker on your car. The cops key in on these and will hassle you to death with drug dog searches, license and registration checks. Sadly, since 2000, we are no longer in the "land of free speech".

58. We're living dangerously
We have a Kerry sticker on the car. We had a Wes Clark for President sign on the car earlier. I don't think that most people around here even knew who that was. I've noticed that there are no political bumper stickers on any cars around here at the moment, other than a couple I've seen for some very, very local election. I've worried about being keyed, but this election is more important than my car and if we want Kerry to stand up to the Bush cabal, the least we can do is put a sticker to that effect on a car.

Well, I have a democraticunderground.com sticker on there, and haven't had any problems as of yet. I live in Northern California, but drove up to Oregon in December- still no problem. Well, there was a problem with icy and snowy road conditions, and that was kinda scarey. But otherwise, no problema. I plan on getting a Kerry sticker, too, but wish I could get a Kerry/vp one. But it is true that I've seen fewer and fewer people with truly outrageous stuff like in the old days. And it's true that I am ever so slightly paranoid about even the du sticker. But in all, I think it's a really good way of giving each other a (( ))
But if I lived in heavily republican territory, and there was a valid fear of retaliation, I'd do what I had to do to feel safe.

and a "No WMDs. No Al Qaeda connections. Bush Lies Kill Innocents" bumper stickers since months before the illegal invasion. Prior to that I had an "Impeach Bush" and "Bush/Cheney Corporate Whores" and other than getting flipped off by yahoos periodically, no problems. I have even had people pull up alongside me and thank me for them or ask where they could get them.

I like to watch people's expressions in the side or rear view mirror. Several months into the war, the light bulbs started to come on for most. They know it's all a lie, but they hope they can continue to pretend they are good religious folk and nothing bad is being done with their consent. They know.

I encourage people to do it. It's very lonely doing it by yourself. Is your car getting keyed that big of a deal?

Living in Philadelphia, PA, which is pretty Dem I'm still careful with my "Bush Lied, Thousands Died" sign (with an American flag) which is inside my car on the back parcel shelf. It's on a piece of foam core and has a Dean sticker on the reverse side. When I park I flip it over and haven't had a problem. I'm planning on putting something like 'Think, Criticize, Vote'
I had one guy challenge me on it while driving in NJ, and some yahoos flip me off, but mostly I get thumbs up and big smiles from people.
I am, however wearing my No Bush button everywhere. We ordered 500 from buttonstar and have been selling them. Once we got back our initial investment (which took less than a week!) we decided that we'd donate to either MoveOn or the DNC (I know, I know, it's maybe not the best place, but it might do some good and get * out).

85. the consensus is in....i guess i AM a chickenshit
most of the posts in this thread call for tossing it back into their faces and proudly bearing anti bush bumperstickers.

yet still, i'm afraid. most of the posts have not actually been vandalized, like i have. i know one man who was run off the road and cursed at, seemingly because of a bumpersticker.

i'll definitely think about it. i used to use the magnet sticker routine. i was a sign painter and has access to the flat magnetic material that looks like a bumpersticker, yet, when actually driving down the road, it can't be removed.

i will re-consider, because i definitely don't like to see myself as fearful and hiding in the face of bushco's aggression. i want to say it loud, but i'm just such a chickenshit.

in the meantime, i will continue to make subversive artwork and publish it around the globe. some of it has even been made into bumperstickers, which i've seen in san francisco and arizona.
so, i am doing my small part, and i am learning to grow some nads.

89. I second what Nomad said
Dude, if I can go around with "Show Bush the Door in 2004" in Dallas, Texas, you can do it, too.

I have not been keyed, flipped off, or even so much as glared at. If anyone ever puts a note on my windshield or anything, I will be very happy. Why? I got to them enough to compell them to put pen to paper in their busy day and actually address what I say with my bumper and that is awesome.

IF they key my car, great. Got to them. Got under their skin enough to force them into action.

What's a little car paint compared to keeping my mouth shut all my life?

You think they'd be worried about a couple of bumper stickers? No friggin way.

And after you've had them on a while, honestly, you really don't think about them anymore. And all the smiles and thumbs up have been SOOOOOO worth it. Think of it as giving an encouraging shout out to all those like you out there who need to see it/hear it.

Heck, I'm thinking about adding more.

90. First thing I do when I buy a car
is put my "If you want Peace, work for Justice" bumperstickers on--one in English, one in Spanish. (I bought a bunch of these the last time I got a new car and had to leave the one's on my old one.) Also have two Clark '04 bumper stickers, one "Who would Jesus Bomb?" sticker and one "Denial of Civil liberties means that the terrorists have won." (or something like that.)

My car has never been damaged (although by the end of the time I own a car, who could tell) I have had several people wave me over to tell me they like my bumper stickers. And in early february while while taking my daughter to the ER, the nurse who was wheeling her in paused to tell me she like my Clark stickers. Also, my pastor told me he loved my "Who would Jesus Bomb?" sticker.

Never heard anything negative, though I live in MInnesota it is in a Republican area. But most Minnesotan's would be more passive agressive about their disagreement rather than doing anything overtly nasty.

92. Yes- I can take care of myself but I fear what the Morans might do..
I don't want to have to fight with idiot wingers every god-damned day over an anti-Bush or pro-Democratic bumpersticker.

93. I put them on my older car
Edited on Sun Mar-14-04 02:23 PM by suegeo
But some jackass in an SUV rear-ended me at a stop sign and totalled the car, so I had to get a newer, used car to replace it.

Now, I'm timid about putting something on the newer car, because i just don't need the hassle of some idiot messing with it.

However, when I did display anti-Bush, anti-war stickers on my older car, the response was mostly positive, and nobody messed with my car.

I wear the "It's not a war, it's a con job" button on my coat, and I've had clerks nearly following out of the store, because they agree with the statement and seem to really want to talk about it. Once in awhile, I will get somebody disagreeing with me about the button. Oddly, it's been young white males, of draft age, that will challenge me about it. I just shrug and mark it down to brainwashing.

99. No! Not anymore.
Although I would consider getting the magnetic backing on a political sticker if I was concerned.

I like in a (mostly) Republican area, and see plenty of pro- and anti- Bush stickers. Then again, most of the Repukes here in OC, barring the white power losers in HB and Mission Viejo, are more of the greedy kind, not the wacky Freeperish ones that seem to be more prone to smashing up someone's car if they disagree with a bumper sticker.

The only sticker I have on my car right now is a Save Tibet sticker. Not very political. I had an Edwards one on there too but took it off yesterday. :( No one gave me any grief for that sticker.

102. I still have my Clark sticker on
and added a "Proud to be a Democrat" to my bumper yesterday. I live in probably the most Repuke precint of the most Repuke county in Repuke Nevada . Lake Tahoe has a lot of tourist so it could be a bit of a gamble. My car is a classic BMW convertible and is in beautiful shape, I have never put a sticker of any kind on it until the Clark sticker and when i get my Kerry sticker it will go right next to the other 2, true it does not look as "dignified" as it did when the bumper was blank, but vanity does not go very far in trying to get my other "well positioned" friends to put one on their cars if I am not willing to go along. I have offered to pay to have any of my friends stickers taken off if they put them on, there is nothing more important than beating the *

104. I'd like to put a Kerry sticker on my car...
But I'm afraid of getting keyed or worse. It's just not worth it, ya know? I'll wave signs and contribute money and stuff envelopes and vote, but I don't want to get my car damaged. And it (freeper road rage) happens a lot more than you might think.

106. I've got an old magnetic sign that I've been chipping away at.
I've got an old magnetic Adelphia Cable sign (used to go on vans) that I've been chipping away at for awhile. I just take the bumper sticker, slap it on, and cut out a piece of the magnet. I've got a "Science" fish, a Bush/Satan 04, and a Bush/Chalabi 04 sticker that I slap on the bumper every now and then. Lowe's sells those magnetic sheets as vent covers for heating/AC systems.

110. I got my tire slashed.
I've had an Edwards sticker on my car for about six months. I had to shuffle cars in the driveway and left my car on the street overnight. When I went out the next day, someone had knifed one of my tires.

I don't keep my car on the street anymore. I still have my Edwards sticker. (I wrote in "Vice" next to President.) I'll be adding a Kerry sticker as soon as I get one.

112. I've gotten a lot more positive than negative with my sticker
Supposedly I live in the 3rd most repug congressional district in the country.

My sticker "Steve Shine needs a lobotomy" is about the county repug chair. Received lots of positive responses and in the last two weeks had 2 negative responses. In both cases they utilized their middle finger. And by coincidence both were driving a SUV. The last one was a female wearing sunglasses and appeared to be in her late 20's to mid 30's. I rolled down the window with her and waved at her instead of using my middle finger.

In both positive and negative situations it was enjoyable. It showed that there are citizens in this area that know that the repugs in this area are idiots and having those that support the Shine get mad is fun too.

113. I scotchtape them inside the car windows, remove as needed
When my car was new--oh, about 1990--I didn't want to hurt its paint, and the bumpers are some kind of black matte material that won't hold a sticker, and while my part of the county is moderate to liberal, other parts of the county are conservative to right-wing.

I like being able to change my "billboard" from time to time; and I also like to be able to choose where I flaunt my opinions. I really don't want the paint job wrecked for any reason!

My Dean sticker is still up; I'll replace it when I get a Kerry one. Follow Your Bliss. Investigate Bush/Enron. We're All in this Together (with Earth image). Support Our Troops: Ban Depleted Uranium.

114. I wouldn't dare put anything on my car
I value my life and my car too much for that. :scared: I live in Los Angeles County but unless I happen to be in Santa Monica or West LA, it is just too dangerous, I live in a repuke neighborhood to boot. :puke:

115. Nope!
I'm in a hard-line Republican town (Peoria) in a VERY blue state (Illinois).

Got a bunch of bumper stickers:
"Come the Rapture, we'll have the Earth to ourselves."
"When religion ruled the world, we called it the Dark Ages."
"Howard Dean for America" x2
"Bush/Cheney - America's Second Choice"

I've gotten keyed once, finger, horn, etc.
