Anyone who starts more than two threads on GD in a day is a SOCIOPATH |
|
Come on. There are over 30,000 people on this board now. Creating more threads bumps the others to oblivion, and that's sad, because it often takes time for a thread to really get interesting.
Some of it is from people who start a thread that meets opposition (let's say a "Gore is the only hope for humanity" thread, as an example) and they then start another to shout above the fray. This is just an illustration, but it's happened; often it happens because the person feels entitled as the only sensible voice in the wilderness or something like that. Sometimes it's just narcissism. Whatever.
The simple dynamic of starting new threads pushes old ones away.
Sure, it's fun to pipe up on something, but try to find a topic similar to what was on your mind and join the party.
The old small-town days of this board are gone and there's no going back, but reducing it to the trigger-finger instant gratification of a pulp media is deeeeee-pressing.
You'll note that this is a specific reference to the General Discussion Forum; there are certain individuals who regularly post as many as ten LBNs a day, and they're performing a great service--although that can get a little out of line too--which I wouldn't want to curb.
Just a gentle suggestion, you bastards...

Some of us have fire in our belly and we have to start posts after we get an issue going in our heads.
If we were limited I would have been put off of here several years ago.

maybe...maybe not.
Maybe I'll just support some other people's get-togethers.
Doncha think there's at least a little sense of manners to that? There's no call to make it mandatory or pillory the offenders. To a great degree it's good to be reminded that adopting the privilege of the disenfranchised to suck up all the bandwidth doesn't hold much water in a community of the disenfranchised...
It's sort of an ad absurdum argument anyway, and it's meant more to get people thinking about the dynamic of the board; it probably hasn't crossed everyone's mind.
I, of course, take this extremely personally, and must now hound you endlessly with the dudgeon of propriety. Thou hast impugned me mightily and woe be thee in your future postings.
Say...you from Delphi?

I know I start too many posts and you do have a point. Some people are coming on here to purposley start tons of posts to take over this board and make all of us "Real Du'ers" go away.
I agree with you on what you were saying but sometimes I feel the need to start posts. Like right now!

Not to be snotty, or anything.
Actually, you weren't on my mind as one of the bees in my bonnet; you're a conscientious netizen. Your point is well taken, though, and I guess this approach is just a silly shaming to get people to cut back so others don't have to counter the questionable bandwidth pirates and the sincere babblers.

But Purity...there is a remedy now. Since there are no archives, you can go to the threads you think have value, kick them and put them back into play and knock the ones you don't like off the front page! SO THERE

I'm not sure as to why they do it, but wouldn't it just be easier to put all of one's questions into a single thread? I believe they have been bitten by the evil posting bug that lives under the editorials forum.

5. I basically agree. However, I quibble with the idea that there are 30,000 |
|
posters. There are really only a few hundred active posters. DUer Blitz posted an interesting analysis of this a few weeks ago. I forget what his final number was, but it was surely less than a few thousand active contributors (perhaps very much less).

But the point's still there that there are a lot more active participants than two years ago. There are also lots of posters with more than one moniker.

I've been here since October 2000 and yes there are so many threads. I miss the smaller community sometimes, especially when pressed for time.
However I think that people who post more than 2 threads in GD are more social, then sociopathic. LOL
Additionally, with more people there are more intelligent posts, so I guess it's a trade off.
30,000 members - WOO HOO!
I think I read where at it's peak, Free Republic had 70,000, but it's dropped significantly since Clinton is no longer President. If Bush is in office another 4 years, we can probably expect the same.

I guess I will have to do better. So should we all. And as for the small numbers at Free Republic, isn't that a function of their low literacy computer literacy rate?

7. What if you get paid to post? |
|
I'd love to get a paid position with a campaign to promote the candidate on message boards and internet forums. I believe it's called "astro-turfing". Some of the Democratic campaigns are REALLY good at it.
Not crazy, it's a job.

Posting's one thing. Starting threads is the subject here.
If you're getting paid to go around on the beach on a nice summer day campaigning for someone, you might examine how intrusive that is.
One's job does not absent oneself from all comportment.
If one's paid by a campaign to do this and one's masquerading as a concerned citizen, then one's a bit over the line in ethicland anyway.
Manners and conviviality aren't just what stays this side of illegal...

You're just getting used to this little community here, and since you're a bit of a moderate, you've already taken your share of hits.
Whappity whappity whap.
But...yeah, you might.
Lots of people just don't go beyond page one. Most of my favorite threads start to get interesting late on their second day.
Just gassin' off here...

so in your book it's OK to post like 10 informative, newsworthy posts in LBN a day BUT, Allah forbid we should post 10 of the same damn thing a day in GD!!
I am sick of the double standards around here!

21. Two thread limit? No, its the TYPE and number of threads per hour... |
|
Five threads over 5 hours might be OK, if they are meant to enlighten or contribute to discourse, humor, etc...
One thread a day is too much if it is meant to disrupt..
But just typing a one liner asking who is Mr. X won't cut it. The poster is lazy or a troll or both..

Well, who is Mr. X? I mean I hate to bring it up but it just sounds so mysterious. But if I just leave it there I'm a lazy troll? Well I'll admit to being lazy and I think my ex-wife thinks I'm a troll... but this Mr. X sounds so intriguing...

bait. A limit would be beneficial to DU. I'd also favor all "why my candidate is great/ why your candidate is terrible" threads being confined to Politics and Campaigns. Ditto the "My candidate had pancakes for breakfast!!!!!!!" threads. Too many posters are here simply to promote one candidate or to play games.

The original post is excellent, and your reply is right on the money. Couldn't have said it better. I noticed pretty quickly that many interesting posts seemed to disappear, or that it took far too much time to find them among the chaff. I hate to say it, but there's quite a bit of chaff here. Inane time wasters, yes. What's good is worth sticking around for, though. So far.

26. I'm not a Sociopath!!!!! |

Psychopath perhaps but actually a PhD in Forensic Psychology told me, on a plane, that Sociopath & Psychopath are more or less the same thing but popular use usually puts one in the spotlight for a few years while the other simmers.
Ok?

In fact, that's PROOF!!
Just teasing. It was too good a setup to let pass.
Nah, you're not one of the ones I was mentioning.
I always liked sociopath as a word because it shows the unwillingness to get along and be a part of the greater whole. Right there is the core of my disgust with conservatives: a group of people just concerned with themselves is no place to be. Society is regulation and cooperation, and people who don't act accordingly are takers.
It's a thoroughly applicable word these days...

what a crybaby. Lately you people are out in force and you are worse than the influx of trollers. Some of those GD threads are time wasters and some people DO have 10 good thoughts a day. Let God sort 'em out. I think looking on page 2 or 3 of GD isn't such a tough job now is it?
AND, NO I have neither started a thread today nor do I plan to do so.
