Bush wants warning labels on condoms
http://www.advocate.com/new_news.asp?id=11662&sd=03/13/04-03/15/04

The Bush administration is considering requiring warning labels on condom packages to read that the contraceptive devices do not protect users from all sexually transmitted diseases. Recent studies indicate condoms do not safeguard against human papillomavirus, or HPV, a little-known but widespread sexually transmitted disease that can cause genital warts or cervical cancer. The Food and Drug Administration "has developed a regulatory plan to provide condom users with a consistent labeling message and the protection they should expect from condom use," said Daniel G. Schultz, director of the agency's Office of Device Evaluation. The agency "is preparing new guidance on condom labeling to address these issues," Schultz told members of a House government reform subcommittee Thursday during a hearing called by Republican representatives who are outspoken critics of condom use and sexual health studies conducted with federal research dollars.

Package labels now say that condoms, if properly used, reduce the risk of AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases. The question now is whether that statement needs to have any additional information regarding protection against HPV without discouraging people from using condoms for HIV protection. Some lawmakers fear that such labels could turn people away from using condoms, thereby increasing the risk of contracting diseases such as HIV, chlamydia, and gonorrhea. There are also worries that would-be condom users would confuse HPV with HIV and shun condom use for sexual acts that could put them at high risk for HIV infection.

1. To be honest - this is correct information
However, let's not create a witch hunt on condoms to the point that people will NOT use them. They are overwhelmingly important in the fight against AIDS!!!

13. It is correct info, and what scares me-
I know a woman with HPV personally. She's had it for years and nobody has ever told her what precautions if any she can take to prevent giving it to someone else.

I've had some of the best sex-ed anyone could ask for but knew essentially NOTHING about HPV until recently. It's a disease that needs one hell of a lot more public awareness work.

16. The real agenda is to put a non-specific warning on condoms
Edited on Mon Mar-15-04 11:23 AM by phoebe
in order for "we, the people" to stop using them. What do you bet that they won't be able to come up with a specific label because it will be too "graphic" for "Christian right"/teenageers to deal with and thus they will try to get away with something non-specific? Why the need for a task force for just this reason? They are betting on no-one bothering to read the fine print. Typical Bush strategery.

3. I'm sure Bush couldn't read the label anyway
Not while he's fucking his boyfriend in a dark closet at the Whitehouse.

And no one else will read them either. I think they should put the phrase, "God gets pissed off with you when you use condoms," and it won't have any effect either.

5. Sure why not?
Provided we can stick warning labels on Bush as well.

Something like "voting for this man will destroy your soul".

(Actually HPV is a serious issue. I just question the motives behind this warning.)

I love Cronus's idea though. Every condom should come with a label that says "using this will really piss God off". Hey, it'd convince me to put one on :)

18. Anybody remember
the Durex commercials in the UK in the 80s? They'd show a hated politician (Sadam Hussein) or celebrity (Bonnie Langford) and then say something like "if only their parents had used a condom".

Nothing like that would ever air in the US. Sad to say.

Khash.

12. condoms
I was just thinking the same thing. Who do you know that would stop and read the warnings on a box of condoms. Maybe they will put it on each one and make it so you can't use it until its read!

...once-in-a-while. Just like people that go to fast food joints and are suprised that they're eating unhealthy food, or order coffee and find it to be rather hot when spilled, some people are dumb enough to believe that condoms make them immune to "crotch critters" and other nasty suprises. Little reminders like warning labels are all we can really do beyond sex education...and we all know what Bush and his ilk think of THAT kind of education...

20. If a sperm is like an egg and it's
potential life. Then isn't wearing a condom murder? Maybe it's differant because it's a gang of sperm all fighting to be the one who gets to live so it's the natural death of 99% of sperm and the life of only one sperm. Whatever.

17. Okay. Then how 'bout warning labels on seatbelts
to discourage their use:

"Warning. This seatbelt won't always keep you from being killed or injured in a car wreck"

These guys and their RW ideology will be the end of this country.
