Congressional District 3, Las Vegas,,,, |
|
In the democratic primary for the seat against Jon Porter, a rubber stamp for Bush, we have 2 candidates: A former gaming CEO, not know to be union/worker friendly, formerly Merv Griffin's "right-hand man," (Isn't Merv Griffin a right-winger?) who has money, or a construction union political director with a background working for Citizen's Groups, such as the League of Conservation Voters, who believes strongly in the power of grassroots organization, as opposed to money. Who would you support? Who do you think would win?

1. this is a trick question, right? |
|
Seems like the citizens-group-union-guy would be the obvious choice.
Aren't there a lot of union workers in Las Vegas?

These guys are real, and there are a lot of Union workers in Vegas, but the party bosses are backing the money guy. Is that insane, or what?

You need lots and lots of cash to beat an incumbent, and unfortunately the unions aren't nearly as powerful as they once were (just ask Gephardt).
I'd go with the money guy as long as he isn't a closet Republican like Zell Miller.

but he is a closet Republican all the same. Re Porter, this is his first term, (it's a new district), it is evenly split between Dems and Repubs, and he is an absolute dimwit.

5. The incumbent has a million dollars |
|
I went to the Clark County Democratic Convention and remember hearing one of the speakers say that John Porter (the incumbent) had already raised $1 million dollars.

Incumbent representatives -- especially those with a million bucks -- are extremely hard to beat unless they're mired in scandal or completely nuts.
