Canada to call for ban on arms in space

<OTTAWA—Canada is making an international appeal for a global treaty to ban weapons in space.

Foreign Affairs Minister Bill Graham has flown to Geneva, where he is to tell the United Nations Conference on Disarmament tomorrow that work should begin on a treaty to ban space-based weapons.

Discussing the benefits of guaranteeing peaceful use of outer space would be in the interests of all nations, he adds, when "the growing global public goods provided by communication, navigation and remote sensing satellites are now central to our economies."

Graham's appeal comes while Canada is discussing with the United States Canadian participation in a U.S. ballistic missile defence program.>

.

And I noticed a curious thing

When I went to select the drop-down list to select the short form for the Province, all the STATES are listed too !

Not only that, once one finises the "submit" thing, it comes up with a page so you can forward the letter form to 10 of your webfriends.

So - I would encourage any American people that agree with this to do the same !

Maybe YOUR letter might not get sent straight through, but it may be a good way for you to let others know ?

anyways, being the curious type, I "sent" one to myself, and this is all it says
...............................................................
"Hi,

I've sent a message directly to the Prime Minister asking him to not join the United States' national missile defense system.

Would you send a message too? Click here to send a fax: http://www.ceasefire.ca

Thanks!
.................................................................

no pop-ups or junk, just that weenie text message, so I don't expect any of my chums will be offended by it

THANKS for the heads-up !

:hi: . . . . on edit: I was letter 10975

5. A smart left feint by Martin.
The NDP will be campaigning against Martin's decision to join talks with the Bush White House on Canadian participation in SDI. The Liberals are saying this doesn't involve space-based weapons, but that's just this early stage. The weaponization of space is part of the bigger picture, and once we commit ourselves to the program, we've signalled our intention to be in it all the way.

The Liberals can now answer the NDP's charge by saying "But we're appealing for an international ban on weapons in space," all the while committing Canada to SDI participation. And when, after the election, the face-saving "appeal" fails: "well, we tried..."
