Tutu on c-span
Can't I elect him as my leader?

This reality isn't worth a Desmond Tutu.

3. a wonderful man
He said he would like to see democracy in every country in the world, including this one. (the US) :-)

Caller was challenging with the Ugly American talk that you know, if it were not for the US blah blah--I think caller said Tutu would be speaking German. Tutu is a brilliant man--he effectively made this red necked talking guy look like a fool. Named the coups the US has been involved in

6. The freeperlady shortly afterward...
...came dangerously close to comparing the boosh family (and Bunnypants in particular) to... to... well, she never quite got around to saying JAY-SUS, but she sounded like she was working up to it. Archbishop Tutu handled it all with graciousness, without compromising his principles one bit. He did good.

4. did you guys hear that crazy woman
going on and on about how compassionate * is, and how he starts every day on his knees, and how the Bush family are all about devoting their time to charity.

Tutu was laughing while she was talking, and she got really pissed.

Scary, scary people. Maybe "religiously insane" DOES fit certain callers...

5. My brother met Desmond Tutu when he was filling sand bags
to prevent flooding about 10 years ago. It was on of the defining moments in his life (my brother's not Tutu's).
Desmond Tutu told my brother that he would make a difference, I think he was right.

9. If I thought for a moment that he'd accept, I'd urge
that Rome elect him Pope when Wojtyla pops his clogs. He'd be one of the three best since the Enlightenment, I think: Roncalli, Montini, and Tutu.

13. The CoC can elect whomever they choose
Edited on Fri Mar-19-04 08:09 AM by Mairead
They're not bound by any restrictions at all.

(But to the point of your post: of course it's a stretch, particularly given that the Church has a highly reactionary and quite bigoted hierarchy. But that very fact makes the idea a wonderful one! Sort of like real democracy in America, y'know?)

12. Won't he also be on Hardball and Daily Show?
I remember Chris and Jon going back and forth regarding which show Tutu appears on first.
