I just saw this on Fark.com

Bin Laden's No 2 'captured in Iran'

Rory McCarthy in Islamabad and Luke Harding in Kabul
Monday February 18, 2002
The Guardian

Osama bin Laden's most senior lieutenant, the Egyptian militant Ayman al-Zawahiri, has been captured and jailed in Tehran, a leading Iranian newspaper reported yesterday.
Zawahiri, the founder of the Egyptian Islamic Jihad, was arrested several days ago and has been imprisoned in the city's Evin jail, where political prisoners are usually held, the Hayat-e-Nou newspaper said.

If the report is correct, the arrest is the most serious strike at the heart of Bin Laden's al-Qaida network since the World Trade Centre attacks, and a diplomatic coup for Tehran.

The FBI has Zawahiri on its most-wanted list in connection with the August 1998 bombings of two US embassies in east Africa in which 224 people were killed. It has offered a $25m reward for information leading to his capture.

2. How long has he been "#2" ?
Wondering whether this has been his position all along. Or whether they're just calling him that since his capture may be imminent?

I shouldn't be so suspicious.

6. Those Iranians...
First, they report the capture of Ayman 2 years ago, then they first report the capture of Saddam before the Western Media, now they claim the US is shipping in WMD to Iraq and that we have bin Laden on ice...

23. I thought the same thing.
I mean, I know I don't have my deck of terrorist trading cards, so I'm no expert. But doesn't it seem like they're getting the number two guy, like, every other week?

16. Guardian 2002 report may be wrong
I did a quick google and other world newspapers reported that the son of "Ayman al-Zawahiri" was captured in Feb 2002. More reasearch required.

19. Perhaps he is a cat. Or a vampire... Or a mummy! That's gotta be it!
They did say he's from Egypt. I wouldn't be surprised if he's really the haunted remains of Akhnaton, come back to avenge the despoilage of his crypt by Prescott Bush. That's how these things usually work.

US military doubts reports of death of top bin Laden aide Zawahiri
AFP, October 3, 2002

KABUL - US military officials in Afghanistan Thursday sought to discredit reports that Ayman al-Zawahiri, said to be a top aide of alleged terrorist mastermind Osama bin Laden, had been killed in the country.

In a report from Pakistan, Russia's ITAR-TASS news agency cited unnamed sources as saying that al-Zawahiri was killed in a special operation carried out by unidentified individuals. It did not give any date.

"I do not have any information relating to this," US military spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Roger King told AFP.

"As far as I know, this is a rumour and nothing more."

21. if this is true
how come he has released audio and video tapes cheering the alqaida troops on within the past 2 years. I suspect that report was not accurate. He is really the brains behind alquaida not bin laden - much like cheney is the brains, not bush.
