How about el salvador?
El Salvador is having an election this Sunday.
Once again, there is a left leaning candidate and a rw corporatist.

Both sides seem to have a checkered past, but I haven't seen much discussion on this here.

I posted about it in LBN, but noone seems interested.

Here's a story about it from the Guardian( actually an AP story):

I don't know much about El Salvador over the past few years, but it seems the rw ARENA is trying to scare the voters against voting FMLN by saying that the U.S. will stop letting Salvadorans here send money home if they win. Anyone know what the deal is?

1. Sadly, very few people here are interested in what happens outside the US
ARENA has been in power for several years now, and FMLN used to be a guerrilla, but after the civil war ended they became a political party. Their candidate is one of the former guerrilla leaders, and is in a close second in polls. ARENA is expected to win, as usual, and yes, they've been using scare tactics suggesting FMLN is communist and will cause great economic problems. Meanwhile, FMLN claims ARENA is relying on Salvadoreans in the US to keep the economy up.

2.  Do you have any idea what the real story is?
These days, this seems like the same story over and over in Haiti, Venezuela, Spain, etc. What do you think of Arena and FMLN?

I've read a few articles, but they all seem to just be throwing accusations at each other.

Do you have an idea where I might find a good history of the current situation?
