Rally Against the Iraq War: Fayetteville, NC
Edited on Sat Mar-20-04 04:42 PM by Neo Progressive
Due to lack of sleep, this may not be the most eloquent thread on the board, but I'll try my best. This morning/afternoon Dolo Amber, Ranbowgrrl, and I met and attended the anti Iraq War rally in Fayetteville, North Carolina, home of Fort Bragg. We arrived kind of late, but still marched along side 900+ other protesters from the train station to a park near Fort Bragg (according to a sign). Of course we encountered the anti-anti-war crowd, many with the same tired slogans of "WE REALLY LOVE OUR TROOPS" and some people whose support of the troops is even more vehement, because they underlined the sentence, or added several exclamation points.

The walk was an enjoyable one, with people maintaining a sense of humor throughout. After we passed the first group of right wingers, a man in a Mazda Miata drove by and told us that we're "all sick." I wanted to know what "a man was doing driving a Miata?" The Policeman making sure we didn't try to take Havana laughed and said his wife tells him the same thing. When we arrived at our target destination, we were told to get our bags ready, if we had any, so the police could search for alcohol, guns, or weapons of mass destruction. He didn't immediately realize he made a joke, but it was funny nonetheless. As we entered the park, we encountered another group of right wingers... or so we thought. Yes there were other people than the first group Dolo Amber, Rainbowgrrl, and I encountered, but the vast majority of them were the same people. They drove themselves to the "next spot." More on these people soon.

Though the three of us have heard or read much of what was being said at the rally, it was still enjoyable. There was a Hispanic man who gave his speech in Spanish, and I immediatly thought that this guy could have been a revolutionary like Che Guevara in another time. There were musicians, and conceptual artists, and a lot of soldiers.

The soldiers received especially hostile reactions from the right wingers, who took to using their own microphone and speaker to "inform" us of their opinion. We didn't know it was a microphone at first, but just some really stupid person who can't use a bullhorn correctly. One could see the anger in the right's faces when a soldier, who had served in either Vietnam, the Persian Gulf War, or even this present one, got up to speak.

These right wingers seemed to come straight from Free Republic.com. When they spoke, and we could understand what the hell they were saying, it made no sense. There was mention of 1985, though neither of us knew why. There was discussion about communism, though what it centered on was lost in the speaker's inability to use a microphone properly. Then a couple stupid things were said. The totally inept mic user said something about the Iraqi fighters being "anti-colonialists." A little after, we finally heard one phrase in its entirety, and this summed up why the right can't be trusted:

Sure we may be imperialists, but at least we're good at it.

It was our favorite thing we had heard all day. The unbelievable arrogance of that statement is appalling. The fact we've lost 400+ people trying to colonize Iraq shows we're not too good at this. Being an imperialist is not something one brags about either.

Talking to some people around the protest, we had heard that the right wingers were calling people "fags," and one woman was ready to throw something at a group of people who walked out. Among the right winger's group was a bunch of bikers, who love freedom of speech so much, they revved up their bikes to drown out whatever was being said by the speakers at the rally. Eventually they left, and by the time the three of us left, maybe twenty of the fifty or so right wing nuts were still shreiking, or taunting speakers with chants of what sounded like "air ball."

All in all this was good fun, and I hope to continue going to rallies like this one. These are unbelievably important in keeping this country free, and the messages that come from these rallies are just as important.

1. Congrats on getting there!
I didn't make it today....my family was all over to celebrate my birthday and my anniversary and my husband and I were pretty burnt out from last night's pre-anniversary party with friends (too many mudslides!).

I'm so glad so many showed up! You did us proud! I'm glad some sane people were there to support the soldiers who spoke because that's REAL support for the troops.

Thank you for going and representing those of us who didn't make it. See ya next time!:)

3. Yes
It was a lovely day, a lovely experience all around. Many thanks again to rainbowgrrl24 for volunteering to drive!! :yourock: (Psst, NeoProgressive, they were showing scenes on News 14 a bit ago... we were on!! :D)

What was the 'anti-colonialist' thing again? I was trying to tell shortbus, but I couldn't remember the, er...phrasing, for lack of a better word. The motorcyclists were particularly loud during any soldier/military family members speaking, did you notice? Way to "support the troops"...:eyes:

We got some cool pics, there seemed to be a contingent of the 'radical grannies' about, who were JUST the cutest things EVER! :bounce: Hopefully they'll be posted soon.

I'm so glad we went. :)

4. I just got the pictures developed from today!
And the grannies are awesome!
The pictures of the freepers are so amazingly telling, and... their signs.... Oh, those signs are classic "moran" material! I'll try and post the pictures later tonight or in the morning- the scanner is in the other room, and I'm not leaving the couch until this basketball game is over (or I fall asleep)

I'm also really! glad that we went! I learned about the awesome power of the underline today! (And for the record- I really support the troops... {Note the power exerted when an underline is combined with bold text] }

It was great meeting my first 'real life' DU people!
dolo amber and NeoProgressive- :yourock:

Didn't you think the crowd was just beautiful? The more I think about how many different cultures, lifestyles, religions, etc. were represented in that (relatively) small group of people the more I'm thinking it was just gorgeous. As opposed to the ALL WHITE, doughy, hate-filled *other* side...bleh. x(

7. Many thanks for this report! I kept checking DU and the Cables but wasn't
seeing any reporting on anything going on.

We have to keep trying in whatever ways we can to protest "Imperialism."

He is the little guy on the lower left with the white shirt. we had a great day! I wish I had met up with you all. Did you hear the freeper chant (I think there were about 40 of them) as we marched by...
"We tried peace and got 9/11!".... Pathetic! :eyes:

9. Yeah. I heard that.
Ya know- it doesn't even fit well into a chant cadence. Trying to punctuate it as I heard it, I get: "We Tried- Peace. And Got nineoneone"
Morans.

11. Yes, I forgot to mention that chant in my original post
Edited on Sun Mar-21-04 04:33 PM by Neo Progressive
When this becomes an article on my site it will be mentioned. It's a shame that this all came together so quickly, or we could have coordinated it so we could all meet or something.

Oh well, maybe at the March for Choice in DC.

12. I couldn't go. Thanks for the sitrep.
I put in for the time off; my department head had to leave town for a family emergency and the duty of running the department fell to me. A thousand apologies. (Y'know, y'all could have stopped by the Home Depot to say hi. I was there from 7am to 5pm.)

The pro-war crowd that sounded like they were straight from Free Republic? Well...there was a reason for that. The police issued two permits to counterdemonstrators. One group was composed of the Rolling Thunder motorcycle club (the people who love freedom of speech so much they revved their motorcycles to drown out the antiwar speeches) and the people who are building the park across Bragg Boulevard from the Airborne and Special Operations Museum. The other was the Old North State Chapter of Free Republic.

A few days before the rally, the woman running the Freedom Memorial Park steering committee said in the paper that what you were doing was disrespectful to the troops and the wives were really upset. Of course, they're not upset at all when their husbands get blown to shit by a homemade land mine that they should be thousands of miles away from. They're not upset when their husband calls and tells them to send a care package containing a set of body-armor plates and a GPS because the army can't give them either. They're not upset when their husbands are fighting a war on one meal every three days. But they're upset by Dolo Amber holding up a sign that says "Bring Our Boys Back Home."

You were nowhere near Fort Bragg. You were at the end of Bragg Boulevard; if you would have driven past the museum, then gone about ten miles more, you would have been at Fort Bragg.
