As the spokesman for an aircraft carrier that was bombing Iraq last year, Navy Lt. John Oliveira was on television daily, smoothly describing his government's goal of "taking the war on terrorism to the terrorists."
But inside, he was falling apart.
At the same time, Christie Schmid, a Mennonite in Seattle, was doing a lot of praying.
K.L. Shannon, a longtime activist, was rallying against the war, but it was a war in her own back yard: That of housing problems and racial profiling of people of color.
As the anniversary of the war in Iraq unfolded yesterday, they and others who oppose the U.S. military action said the past year has pushed them to do things they've never done before.
Some went to Iraq. Others got active in the Democratic Party or went to their first peace march. Still others say they've cranked up their interest in politics and deepened their understanding of the Middle East.
