There's an apocryphal story about a defendant who was convicted of his 5th crime before a judge and as he's hauled away for a very long sentence in jail, he says, "I eally didn't do it this time, Your Honor." to which the judge replies, "I believe you, but this is for all of the times you weren't caught for all the other shenanigans you pulled."
When are people gonna wake up and realize that the gestalt is critical here - the massive amount of dissembling, cover-up, and outright lies are just overwhelming. They used to make fun of Clinton's parsing of language - these people don't try. They just say whtever they want and think they'll get away with it because they have to this point.
But alas, even on the day of his resignation there were plenty of pro-Nixon folk - who said that all that stuff on the tapes was just the way things are done and that he was no more guilty than anyone else of criminal behavior in the WH. So for a lot of people, even the smoking gun won't do.
So when people like Dan Abrams express a mea culpa it reminds me of the homophobic guys from high school - the towel snapping idiots who used to torture the slightly less 'masculine, testosteroned' crowd, who then came forward out of the closet all teary saying, "I'm so sorry that I knowingly tortured so many people and ruined their young lives - I hope you'll find it in you heart to forgive me..." Well, you shouldn't have been such a worm in the first place - you should know better because your parents, your religion, your peers, should have all taught you better. But of course, they didn't did they? Because for all of Floyd Abrams' good qualities, the son is just trying to outshine his dad and be a media star. He of cleft chin and 'chiseled good looks'. And a law degree.
I remember when the Supremes rendered Bush v. Gore and he had the papers - he couldn't read or interpret it correctly - he got it wrong and then was helped by other correspondents to realize that it was over.
These reporters, if you want to call them that, are not reporting and haven't for a very long time. Although yellow journalism goes back a long way, the media saturation has made these people more like extended family members to many, than correspondents. The populus talks about anchors or pundits as though they actually share space in the house, "I was watching Jim Pinkerton during dinner and he said to us that..." And then when the obvious truths finally hit these guys over the head, and they 'change their minds' (usually for all the wrong reasons), the expression of surprise, "How was I to know????
well, you idiot, because you either bought and paid for, physically or fiscally afraid for your life/job, or just a moron. You get to pick, but I'd wager all of the above.
