Wouldn't You Know--Media Featuring Gore's Rant from Last Night |
|
Watched the Dem UNITY Dinner and went for the screen when Gore went on his stupid, cutsie rant (and don't tell me he didn't know exactly what he was doing). This is the bit about "I did not support John Kerry, Pres. Clinton did not support John Kerry, Pres. Carter did not support John Kerry, Terry McAuliff didn't support John Kerry, but he went out and earned it, blah, blah". He definitely was going for the not so subtle message that the party big shots really, really don't support Kerry (bullcrap). The minute I heard it I knew what would be a morning news clip from that excellent evening. Sure enough---and what was the spin that went with it?... the pointing out that it might have been a Dem Unity Dinner but they aren't so united!!! Then media trips off to again "defend Bush' from the Clarke charges. There were great clips to come out of those speeches and Gore just wiped out the whole essence the Dems were trying to get across that the party has been united as never before and united in the goal of removing this regime. It looked like even Howard Dean wanted to swallow his fist when Al did his thing. That was totally unnecessary and looked like Al is basically trying to blame everyone but his own campaign for not solidly beating Bush in 2000. I wonder if they are going to have him speak at the convention---George wil definitely tune in to hear that one!!!

2. oh, of course the evening was full of great great stuff but |
|
the minute Al started I knew this was going to be the clip. We didn't need that. They were looking for something like that because we are talking "unity" and the media was looking for "not so fast, these people all hate each other and won't pull together". And like I said, Gore is a seasoned politician and he just didn't accidentally have a bad choice of presentation. We gained a lot last night; but unfortunately, this snipit will go a long way to communicating that we really are not that far along.

25. This nit picking about Gore ... |
|
Is identical to the RNC talking points of 2000 ...
It is a LIE that Gore 'misrepresents' his message by being passionate during his speeches ...
Gore is a wonderful man, who is adored and respected by nearly ALL Democrats ...
All except you ...
HIS message is MY message ....
LETS focus on knocking BUSH instead of nit pickin our own ...
Its time we showed some anger about wht is happening to our country ..
Those who wish to please the rightist nazi's in our country should get the hell out of the way ....

3. As long as they include the line, "He went out and earned it." |
|
I think we'll be alright. The more the media slants the news in lieu of all this "new" information (that we here on DU have known for more than three years) flooding the mainstream, the more the mainstream will begin to see through their smoke and mirrors.

|
a little sick and tired of Gore-bashing, which seems to have become an art even here on DU, of all places. Yes, he has his faults, but it seems to me that he just can't seem to do anything right for ANYONE, no matter WHAT the hell he does.
Even when he endorsed Dean, you could hear the squealing and squawking from the Dean people a hundred miles away. I saw the same speech in its entirety last night, and I don't at all agree with your interpretation or your perspective, and others I've spoken to don't either, they all thought it was a great speech. And remember that Gore did better in the election than Shrub, which everyone seems to forget.

What do you call getting more than HALF A MILLION VOTES MORE than that drunken fratboy? And he WOULD have won TN, had not Shrub's fundie goons pulled the same shit there that they did to McCain in the South Carolina primary. And he actually DID win Florida.
Maybe you need to go back to math class!

sick of the Gore bashing too. I like him and am extremely disappointed over what happened to him. He seems to me to be likable and that he genuinely cares about people. Not like smirky, who could give two shits about anybody but himself. The people who like smirky are just like him, too.

24. Gore won more votes than any Democratic Pres in history |
|
And he beat Bush by five times the margin by which Kennedy beat Nixon.
With Florida, Gore had a substantial electoral vote victory as well, but Bush's brother the Bush nutballs and the PNAC war-hardon crew overthrew the election result in Florida, and the Soiled Court sealed the deal.
Gore is not a loser so much as Bush is a criminal and that's the perspective from which any Gore-bashing should be seen.
That's just my opinion.

do we jump on the next available soap box and say to the country: HEY WE REALLY DON'T WANT KERRY, WE HATE KERRY, WE ARE JUST LYING TO THE COUNTRY, BUT NOW RUN OUT AND VOTE DEMOCRATIC!! In other words its politics and you shut up and smile and unite. If people don't then there are 16,000 fractions running around in circles, going nowhere and losing in one landslide after another. There was no point to that "way of putting" it by Gore last night. He told us to Move ON---perhaps he needs to do so himself.

We have a liberal candidate with a liberal voting record.
He fought in Vietname and then spoke out against it.
He has the presence and the demeanor that is presidential.
Could he use more of a fire in his belly? Sure.
Hold my nose. Hell no. I have not been this excited about the record of a candidate for president in awhile.
He made a couple of bad votes. That is for sure. However, that has been a enough for everyone to go running around acting like he is some DLC Lieberbush whore or Daschle pink tutu wimp.
What is it a 19 year voting record most of it quite liberal?
I do not get it.

18. No...but you have to look at reality... |
|
....and the reality is that the Democratic party screwed Gore because he was too 'anti-corporation'. He really pissed off the DLCers when he called corporations 'greedy'.
- The 'factions' are caused by the decisions made by the Democratic leadership. The leadership decided to become corporate whoremongers who put cash first and the people second.
- Gore wants to restore our government to pre-Bush* conditions. Those who oppose him want to appease the Bushies and corporate welfare. If Gore seems bitter....he has every right to be so...in consideration of the fact that our party has been stolen right from under our feet.

10. they never place these things in context |
|
That snippet came immediately after he noted that the Republican bigwigs annoint their nominees, and that the Democrats in essence allow the party rank-and-file to select their nominees. Thus, the Democratic leadership for the most part kept their hands off the levers and let the voters decide. I'm not surprised they played the soundbite without mentioning what had immediately proceded it.
I thought Gore was terrific last night. In fact, the only speech that didn't really resonate with me was Kerry's - it seemed poorly organized and wasn't delivered all that well (and yeah, I've been a Kerry supporter since last fall. It still wasn't a great speech). Could be because he followed Clinton.

19. Neecy--I'm glad you mentioned about Kerry's speech |
|
I didn't know if it was just me. His speech was a collection of a lot of the soundbites from the campaign trail which all present (just like us) could echo by heart. I thought for that occassion there were be now new words...like some real biting, motivating type things because these are the people (50 state DNC chairs) that are going to go out and rally the troops. I hope before John goes back out on the trail there is a rewriting of the script and that it is rewritten every month or so. We can't just keep saying these same things. He needs to get some good lines and hard points like Clinton did.

You'd think that his speechwriters would have put together a major speech for this event, not only because of the DNC chairs but because many of those present are major party fundraisers. Granted they've probably already contributed the maximum to his campaign, but they can organize others.
It rambled and seemed off-the-cuff. And will somebody in the Kerry campaign - anybody - tell him to stop shifting his weight from foot to foot when he's behind a podium. I've been to one of his rallies and he doesn't do that when he's just behind a mic, but at a podium it makes him look tentative and unsure.
Okay, so I didn't like his speech and given his recent vacation I think he should have prepared better for it. It was an off night and I still think he's going to be a very good candidate.

11. The Democrats knew that Al Gore and Jimmy Carter did not support Kerry |
|
...and that was a point that needed some clarification. His point was that even though he was not supported by himself and the others mentioned, John Kerry went out and "earned" it and in the process earned the respect of his primary opponents also. It's too bad it has been distorted in such a way.

It would have been seen as very disengenious if Carter and Gore got up there and suddenly started singing Kerry's praises. Some explaination was in order. Adults can handle it. It will be a long-forgotten sound bite 220 days from now, which, by the way, is plenty of time for Kerry to pull together those who were not with him in the primaries. When is he going to start on that? He seems happy to have Dean, Edwards and Clark speak in support of him, but when is he going to speak to the supporters of Dean, Edwards, and Clark?

Gore gives a speech, the right does it's thing then you bash Gore. Just what the right wing doctors ordered.
Don't blame the Dems for speaking out just because a right wing propaganda machine goes after them.
You would have us silence our speakers for fear the right might use their words against them. That's why the right does that. They want all of us to act just as you have. Well you are in the minority here thank God.
