Condoleezza Rice's Credibility Gap

A point-by-point analysis of how one of America's top national security officials has a severe problem with the truth

March 26, 2004
Download: DOC, RTF, PDF

Pre-9/11 Intelligence

CLAIM: "I don't think anybody could have predicted that they would try to use an airplane as a missile, a hijacked airplane as a missile." – National Security Adviser Condoleezza Rice, 5/16/02
FACT: On August 6, 2001, the President personally "received a one-and-a-half page briefing advising him that Osama bin Laden was capable of a major strike against the US, and that the plot could include the hijacking of an American airplane." In July 2001, the Administration was also told that terrorists had explored using airplanes as missiles.
CLAIM: In May 2002, Rice held a press conference to defend the Administration from new revelations that the President had been explicitly warned about an al Qaeda threat to airlines in August 2001. She "suggested that Bush had requested the briefing because of his keen concern about elevated terrorist threat levels that summer."
FACT: According to the CIA, the briefing "was not requested by President Bush." As commissioner Richard Ben-Veniste disclosed, "the CIA informed the panel that the author of the briefing does not recall such a request came from within the CIA."

3. What? Again?
How many does this make? I think she did morning shows five times last week. She did an interview with Brokaw, too.

Hasn't she saturated the market? What else is there to say?

Is shrub sending her out again and again, until she gets it "right," like he tried to do to Clarke, when he wanted him to redo his paper finding Iraq at fault, rather than Al Queada?

Damn, I am glad I am not that woman! I am glad I don't look like her, either.

9. I think Condi could "do herself in." I mean that. She can't even
appear under oath. How many more lies can she tell and keep straight? That quivering voice gives it all away.

10. Condi has jumped the shark.
She's now up there with benifer. She's frowned and snarled and denied and refused her testimony to be sworn-in before the 9/11 commission. And she still doesn't get it.

She was ill equipped to be the NSA and consequently must share the blame for 9/11 and the administration for the invasion and future occupation of Iraq. (We broke it. We have to fix it. We can't pull out with an "Oops we goofed" postcard.) And what will become of her? A book deal and a government pension.

Meanwhile, Martha Stewart, who's advice never killed anybody is facing prison time.

I won't be watching 60 minutes to see Condi get softballs from Ed Bradley. She's jumped the shark.

11. Bradley better come correct, ala 60 Minutes
60 Minutes is famous for putting politicos and swindlers on the hotseat, he better be prepped for this. I am so sick of fawning journalists not asking the tough questions we all want asked.

13. Methinks Condi's Gonna Be Minced Meat
I've loved Bradley's work over the years...very direct, very tough yet very smooth. He's the yin to Wallace's yang when it comes to big stories and interviews. When I saw he got the draw and not Leslie Stahl smiles went out big time here. This is gonna be good.

RoveCo. is counting on Mz. Rice to get the "last word" in the Sunday yak orbit...primarily to keep the base from grumbling. This is rear guard to get something out to counter whatever headlines Clarke will generate all Sunday and into Monday from MTP. I wouldn't be shocked if her royal pie hole announced that she will testify under oath...just not on TV...watch (or she may go the whole route...depends on how devestating Clarke is that morning). If Clarke isn't seen as having done any more damage, then Condi plays martyr/fighter...executive privilidge, national security, bad hair day, etc.

Methinks the brass at 60 minutes know they have another big draw coming here...and for the same reasons people tuned in last week...to see if Chimpster really did compromise national security. When Clarke said yes and held his ground, it took a direct hit on Bunnypants, Inc. and the bleeding hasn't finished. While Rice hopes this is the last word (no more committee hearings for a month), Bradley will go for the jugular. He knows she's on the ropes here and isn't gonna give her a hand. The more she squirms, the more it validates Clarke's appearance last week that CBS took a lot of shit for (book sale connections).

There's a tide turning here...if the lies and deceptions continue, more and more of the "establishment" media (supposedly librul...yeah right) will start seeing the Bushbot enterprise as a "target of opportunity"...loaded with lots of WMD...Words Of Mass Deception. It'd be great to see the Whoremedia and the Rove Bushbots tear each other apart all summer. Let 'em do our dirty work.

In the meantime, this is more Must See stuff...along with the replay of the 911 hearings during the day on C-SPAN. Imagine they've got Maalox stocked in the White House these days...LOL!!!

16. She digs a deeper grave everytime she opens her mouth now.
Sje should put some duct tape over her mouth until she takes the oath.

I don't understand why they are doing this? Why not leave it alone now and let it die? They are keeping the issue alive for us. Very stupid.

17. Exactly!!!
Everytime her scowling face shows up on a talk show, the first thing that pops into everyone's mind is: Why isn't she under oath in public before the 9/11 commission? Why is she running around NOT under oath on talk shows? Why won't she swear to tell the truth? She must be lying.

I absolutely LOVE it. It's priceless and they are going down in fricking flames.

23. they need do this after that Clarke interview.
They gave Clarke the opening shot, now its fall back into line with the Rice interview. I expect they will just let her talk and talk giving her spin on the situation.

24. the August 6 PDB
August 6, 2001: President Bush receives classified intelligence briefings at his Crawford, Texas ranch indicating that bin Laden might be planning to hijack commercial airliners. The memo read to him is titled "Bin Laden Determined to Strike in US", and the entire memo focuses on the possibility of terrorist attacks inside the US. National Security Advisor Rice later claims the memo was "fuzzy and thin" and only 1 and a half pages long (his normal daily security briefings run two or three pages) but other accounts state it was 11 pages long. (Newsweek, 5/27/02, New York Times, 5/15/02, Die Zeit, 10/1/02) The contents have never been made public. However, a Congressional report later describes what is likely this memo (they call it "a closely held intelligence report for senior government officials" presented in early August 2001): it mentions "that members of al-Qaeda, including some US citizens, had resided in or traveled to the US for years and that the group apparently maintained a support structure here. The report cited uncorroborated information obtained in 1998 that Osama bin Laden wanted to hijack airplanes to gain the release of US-held extremists; FBI judgments about patterns of activity consistent with preparations for hijackings or other types of attacks and the number of bin Laden-related investigations underway; as well as information acquired in May 2001 that indicated a group of bin Laden supporters was planning attacks in the US with explosives." (Senate Intelligence Committee, 9/18/02) Incredibly, the New York Times later reports that Bush "broke off from work early and spent most of the day fishing". (New York Times, 5/25/02) The existence of this memo is kept secret until May 2002 (see May 15, 2002).
