CRAWFORD — Tonkawa Park was alive with politics, fund-raising, entertainment, and chili last Saturday as a protest and the St. Paul Lutheran Church Cemetery Association’s second annual chili and bean cook-off were held.
According to its website, Act Now to Stop War & End Racism (ANSWER) estimated that over 45 countries and over 200 U.S. cities in 36 states marked the one-year anniversary of the U.S. invasion of Iraq on March 20.
Major U.S. protests occurred in New York City, San Francisco, Chicago, and Los Angeles; in Texas, Beaumont, Houston, Dallas, and Austin. Organizers of the Crawford rally estimated that about 1,000 people were in attendance.
“As we stand here today, we continue our demand to end the occupation of Iraq and a swift removal of our troops,” said Charlie Jackson, founder of Texans for Peace. “Let us move forward with energy and with bravery as we join with millions around the world to continue to say, ‘No to war—both here and aboard.’”

Captain Shannon Sharrock, Ret. of Military Families Speak Out, shared Nader’s view on “bringing the troops home” but she intended to only “give voice to military families who refuse to sit idly by and watch as their loved ones are sent to a war that has never been justified and never will be,” not endorse a political candidiate.
Sharrock, a 1997 West Point graduate, served as a heliocopter pilot and is now a second-year law student at Baylor University. Her husband, Captain Joseph Sharrock, is serving with the 101st Airbourne Division in Iraq.
“This is war hashed by the chickenhawks now roosting in the White House to feather their pockets with soft money from soft contracts, who know nothing of combat or Islamic Culture or the sacrifics our soldiers make everyday this is allowed to continue,” she said.
Sharrock said that statements made by President Bush and Congress of American soldiers receiving the best equipment money could buy are false.
“For an entire year, my husband’s soldiers lived in tents shredded by both age and the elements,” she said. “After a year in the desert, my husband and most of his unit left Iraq just two days ago without ever receiving bulletproof vests.
“The first wave of soldiers to return from Operation Iraq Freedom have already received orders to Iraq, some of whom will have only had as little as six months in stabilization before redeployment for another year of service in Iraq.”
