15. Leno vs. Letterman - the GOP pulled for Leno?

Sure it sounds crazy, until you realize the Tonight Show has a massive audience and is probably watched by more people than the news. Remember all the Monica Lewinsky jokes? The corporate media turned against Clinton hard by giving the Republicans all the airtime they wanted to trash him about his sex life. When Clinton started bombing Iraq again, and was pushing for an invasion, the tv said he was doing it to distract us from his scandals, and didn't take his warnings of terrorism seriously, nor his warnings about Hussein's WMD program.

I remember a silly TV movie about the fight to take over the Tonight Show. The movie had some ridiculous plot about Leno hiding in a closet to spy on the network executives.

Perhaps the power struggle had something behind it - notice the timing at least. If Leno leans Republican and Letterman leans Democrat, that would explain why the unfunny Leno won out over the hilarious Letterman in what should have been a no-brainer.

The Republicans needed Leno as a popular icon that would attack Democrats and praise Republicans, like Arnold.

When exactly did the corporate media start leaning Republican?

but Leno's ratings have been pretty consistantly superior to Dave's.
Ratings aren't delivered by Rove or the RNC and that's all the networks seem to care about.
