15. Listening to the callers on C-Span
I know they want to hear from repukes but all of them are criticizing any and everything regarding this debate and praising * at the same time. Surely they knew that would happen. It would have been better had they allowed only democrats and labor/union callers.

Its a bit hard to go back earlier than today in GD, but I stand by my observation and opinion. In the end, I'll vote for whomever is nominated, but till then I'm pinned to Howard -- Call me old fashioned, but I just can't bring myself to wave pom pom's for anyone else while Howard's my man.

I felt Gep did the best because he has a strong pro labor record that he could actually talk about.

Kuci could have come off so much better had he not shouted every answer and attack his fellow Dems. If he had remained calm I think he would have looked the strongest for the night

Joe and Graham got destroyed IMHO

23. I'm so sorry that I agree with you
I love Kucinich and I believe his heart is the biggest in this campaign. He needs, however, to be less ascerbic. What he says is good, it's the delivery. On the Iowa forum the other day he was just great. Maybe because he had time on his side and could actually talk in sentences instead of soundbytes. Here's hoping he corrects this just as he wisely had his hair styled. He looked good, but sounded too extreme. Help him out Kucinich staffers. He is so much better than he sounded tonight.

I watched the forum, jp, and saw NOTHING having to do with Kerry winning that round of candidate appearance. He has a lot of the right things to say, but so did Al Gore and that didn't work either.

Something is missing in Kerry, and he'd better figure out what it is.

Seriously, watch the tape. I nearly fell out of my chair when he got those big cheers--that's a rarity for Kerry and he deserves credit for getting them. He also kept his canned remarks (of which he has many) to a minimum.

And if you want a private conversatino with Syracuse Democrat, PM him/her. This is a public thread, I like to think I can respond to anyone or anything in it.

62. Did he really say that?
Cocky macho idiot.

This is why I despise him-- his nauseating boastful displays of militarism as hero worship.

This is what the Right advocates--military displays of nationalistic pride- although they are hypocrites concerning their own experience. Kerry came from an era where the real heros refused to serve in an unjust war, while Kerry joined up and then learned what a "mistake" it was. Now, we have another unjust war, which Kerry didn't vote against and now he is trying to use his military experience to strut about and show off instead of presenting himself as wise and dignified about the seriousness of war.

As someone who believes war should be reduced to the barbarism it truly is, Kerry's constant references to his heroism is offensive to me.

I'm comfortable voting for any one of them against bush. The only one that I didn't care for tonight was Lieberman. It seemed to me like he was trying to ride Clinton/Gore coattails instead of putting out his own message.

In a good world,

He already won the vote in 2000.

"wake up!

Al Gore is NOT in this race. You can't wish or petition him into this race. I'm still pissed about what happened in 2000. It sucked and it wasn't fair, but we have to deal with the reality that we are facing.

Did you even watch the debate? None of them may be Al Gore, but there certainly is a wide spectrum of thought presented. Surely there was one or two that share some of your positions.

Staying home or wishing upon a star really is going to guarantee Bush the victory. If you think they're unknown, pick one and help make them known.

51. Dean & Edwards
Hard to say if anyone "Won" the debate, but Dean and Edwards both had strong showings. The format was bogus, and the skipping of a candidate per round was pathetic. But insofar as who scored points and who didn't...

Dean's closing statement was PERFECT, and Edwards was solid throughout, but he came across as wishy-washy to ME (I still give him an up arrow, though).

Kerry did nothing to distinguish himself, Gephardt was neutral, and Sharpton hit the zingers.

Lieberman should just go the fuck home already, for the sake of the country. And he can take Kucinich with him, too. Now, I'm sorry if that offends people, but Dennis sounded like an idiot tonight. His screaming/screeching and challenging of other candidates came off as whiny, and turned me off from him completely. I'm a moderate as it is, so on point his platform is not something i agree with wholeheartedly, but he was a joke tonight.

Where was Graham? Oh, wait, there he is.

Bring in Clark for VP, and Dean WILL beat Bush. (or even Powell).

54. Sharpton on delivery, Kucinich on the issues, Dean on viability.

Seriously, whatever anyone thinks of Sharpton, he's a fantastic speaker who really knows how deliver his message with just the right mix of aggressive pursuasion and relaxed humor.

As to the issues, though, I think is was Dennis Kucinich by TKO. The rest were nibbling around the edges and tinkering with this or with that, but DK actually had the balls to (1) point out people's actual *records* and (2) discuss the need for cutting military spending in order to shore up domestic needs. He was unapologetic in his support for national health care, and with his in-your-face opposition to NAFTA and the WTO. He emphatically *won't* win on these issues, but he brought a voice to the table that desparately needed to be there. Now, if he would just take a rhetorical lesson from Sharpton and learn to modulate his delivery a bit ...

Overall, though, Dean has the momentum right now, and his performance tonight will maintain that. He was calm and collected, confident, and came across as a solid electable candidate. That was pretty much all he needed to do at this juncture, and that's exactly what he did.

On a miscellaneous note: I also very much enjoyed hearing Lieberman get noticeably booed for his (Bush-lite) stance on the "vouchers" issue. Will his DLC backers get the message yet? Sadly, I doubt it ...

I noticed Graham, Edwards sometimes drew laughter..sometimes applause, though not always enthusiastic. But only Lieberman drew the loud disapproval of the audience, and rightly so!

The federal government is not funding its harsh mandates on the states regarding education, and now Lieberman wants to waste our tight federal dollars for an "experiment" on school vouchers? This is sickening, especially when we see how the government uses private contractors to cut health benefits and pay to state and local government workers.

I want Lieberman's campaign to go down, and it seems the best way to let this happen is just to allow him to run his mouth. The Democratic voters will do the rest. There were two interconnecting groups that Lieberman needed to win the nomination, the backing of blue collar Democrats who vote in the primary, but mainly vote for the Democrat that they are most familar with. And the backing of minority voters. This forum has shown that Lieberman will soon cut his own throat among blue collar Democrats. And with Braun and Sharpton in the race, Lieberman can no longer rely on his name recognition to take the votes of hispanic and black Democrats for granted.

Edwards lost ground for me. If I hear he was a coal miners daughter one more time I think im gonna slap the dixie chicks!

I liked what I heard from Kerry on health care his plan was interesting. He would do a lot better if he cut out his need for a little story in each answer. Let me tell ya bout the time.....

I just love Mosley! But it wsnt her strongest performance.

Gep was solid. In fact the best performance from him to date. Very forgetable though.. Dunnoo why, I dont dislike the guy or anything he just never jumps out at me. I walk away feeling like i just ate a rice cake.

HAHAHA!!! Graham said pinochio!

Denis a little less coffee there munchkin. He has some great ideas but he came off as a whacko tonight IMHO . I just saw a video of him recently showing him speaking in a church or something where he came off very well. He was a completely different guy tonight. I am all for passion but denis came off like an angry chiuaua(sp?)

Howard ahhh I love the Doc. Mostly cause he usually has something to say. I think he had a pretty shaky start but finished well. I would say a middle of the road performance over all.

Al Definately ran the show though so he got my vote here I am glad he is in the race he has a good voice and his message is a great one for America to hear I hope he hangs in till the end. I think he brings a lot to the debate. Which I must say I didnt actually expect from him. If I didnt know his past I might even vote for him.

I love that we have so many candidates I think each one of them has positions and talking points that need to be heard by the average joe. The diveristy of them is a great reflection of the democratic party!

60. I just want to say that I thought the democrats won this debate
It was very informative, it put many issues out there, it put many solutions out there. Too bad it was only aired on CSpan.

He spoke to the kitchen table issues. A-

Kerry and Graham were unable to stay within the forum time frame and constantly went over time. This made them look unprepared. C-

Dean came off looking bad for his admonishment of DK for mentioning him by name. So-so. C+

Geppy said he stood up against NAFTA and Clinton only to be skewered by DK for supporting WTO. Otherwise an above-average performance for him. B-

Edwards made it clear that he's the "son of a millworker." A thousand times. Otherwise fairly solid. C+/B-

Mosely-Braun seemed like she never got to speak. When she did she was solid. B-

Kucinich was over the top. C-

Lieberman was booed. D-
