Bush's First Amend. Zones Sued :)
St. Pete Times

Redner, friends sue over rights at rally

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

TAMPA - Nude club owner Joe Redner and two friends filed a federal lawsuit Tuesday objecting to the circumstances that led to their arrests last year outside a rally for Gov. Jeb Bush's reelection

<cut>

"I call them First Amendment cages," Redner said after the charges were dropped. "They don't serve any government interest whatsoever. They say they're there to protect the president. Anybody who was going to attack the president wouldn't be in a group protesting the president."

<cut>

The lawsuit names the Sun Dome, the University of South Florida, the Sheriff's Office and the director of the U.S. Secret Service as defendants. The case isn't really about the money, said the men's attorney, Luke Lirot. Their main goal is to bring an end to the use of protest zones set up to keep protesters away from the action.

This needs to be tracked, Redner WILL win. And future protests can use this ruling.

2. This is good
and should have been done from the first. The whole US of A is free speech zone. Anybody that doesn't understand that is unpatriotic!

6. I hate to bring this up...
But does anyone have a guess what effect this will have on the orignal intent of the zones, to keep back anti-choice folks to a reasonable distance from clinics? (at least I believe that was the original intent...)

9. The 'free speech pens' are a Bush* invention...
...and have nothing to do with the clinics.

- This is simply the intimidation and censoring of any Bush* opposition.

10. I agree about the intimidation, etc...
But the actual rule that allows them to do this is the same (in principle). If the ruling is over-turned completely, I worry about the un-intended effect.

I would hope that the judgement would end the cages (here in Portland, they used buses to seperate us), while leaving the principle in place. I don't need to stand right next to Bush to call him an asshole (wouldn't really want to eiter), but neither can I do it from blocks away.
