repukes taken aback at hatred for bush (personal observation/analysis)
Today while I was working in my garden, I was listening to our local NPR, which has some excellent talk shows from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. Today's guest was Jay Nordlinger, National Review editor. Nordlinger has compiled a book of *'s speeches (I know, don't laugh) and was ostensibly on the program to plug it. But those of us who watch these bottom feeders know there's always another agenda and the agenda with this book is to recast bush's image as an inarticulate dolt to a new one--rough but a straight shooter. Always know where he stands and what he thinks. In fact--don't laugh--their model is Demosthenes. More on that later.

My thinking is that they know bush is going down in flames and are trying desperately to shore up his strong points and "candid speech" has been one.

We all know their huge budget for brainwashing allows them to strategize and put out nonsellers like this. It's a strategy to shape public opinion via interviews such as the one I heard today. The plan, based on this book of speeches, is to cast bush as Demosthenes, who, if you recall:

"...was a youth in ancient Athens, no one could have believed that he would become the greatest of the Greek orators. He had a speech impediment, and people jeered at his stammering when he addressed his first large public assembly." (Encyclopedia Brittanica)

Demosthenes, however, overcomes his speaking defect and goes on to be a fairly good orator.

Anyway, somewhere along the line, the talking points plan today went awry because Nordlinger started dwelling on hatred for bush. At first I thought it was going to be just a comment or two but as I listened to the show, he kept referring back to how a certain segment of the population will never think anything of bush, how nothing he will do will ever make such people like him. He used the example of bush's Liberian speech, which had appeal to the more liberal factions. He said there was little comment or positive feedback on this speech from the more liberal quarters. He chalked this up to blanket hatred of bush.

There were many incidents like this during the show. I got the feeling, from the tone of Nordlinger's voice, that he was grappling with the fact that people really do hate this guy.

In reflecting on the show later, I believe that the repukes are just beginning to figure out how much hatred this idiot has engendered. I think discussing bush hatred was not part of Nordlinger's agenda. He was so taken aback by it, however, that he devoted an inordinate number of comments to it. If you want to hear the segment, here's the URL:

http://www.wnyc.org/shows/bl/episodes/08052003

Another interesting part of the show was when the host observed that he deliberately did not announce the listener call-in number. Regardless, there were so many people hot under the collar that Nordlinger was trying to cast bush as a straight shooter and a simple, straightforward guy, that the phones were all jammed up, just with people who either knew the number or went to the trouble to get it. The first caller who got through said she didn't want a simple guy as president! She said she wanted someone who knew how to act like a president and didn't alienate the world!

Such hatred, probably even more so, existed toward Clinton.

9. I disagree
I hated Clinton myself but at least I could find some good in things he accomplished while in office. Now I'm actually nostalgic for that sleazy letch!

Bush, I despise with a passion heretofore unparallelled for any Politician I've ever heard of. I mean I've never found any Politician THIS despicable, disgusting, vile and downright dangerous to everything I hold dear.

11. Their hatred of Clinton was simply venomous
Edited on Wed Aug-06-03 12:43 AM by WindRavenX
The instant his name was mentioned, it was enough for Newt and his minions to start getting that glazed over look in their beady little eyes and start foaming at the mouth like the fat, greasy, crazed dogs they were.
And they screwed around just as bad as Clinton- in some cases, more and in worst situations. Abuse. Drugs.
What they did to Clinton was the worst case of hypocrisy I have ever seen or read about.

24. But this is different
People hate Bush because they have drawn their own conclusions as to his inability to lead,

The right hated Clinton because they were told to by Rush and Co. They hated him because he won.

People are greatly offended by Bush's policies and actions.

The difference is hatred based on thought, and hatred based on groupthink.

25. Exactly – it’s personal…
Josh Marshall discussed this a couple of days ago.

See August 4 entries to his blog: http://talkingpointsmemo.com/

"Another point worth making is that opposition to President Bush isn't nearly as personalized as it was to President Clinton. And, to be frank, it's nowhere near as frenzied. There is simply no equivalent to the talk of 'body counts,' conspiracy theories about the deaths of Vince Foster and Ron Brown, the numerous intensely politicized investigations leading to nothing, the Impeachment jihad, or the lot of it (much of it cynically trafficked in by supposedly respectable commentators and politicians)…"

The left’s opposition to Bush and cadre, I think, is based on the endless stream of awful and corrupt policies and the shameless dishonesty in marketing those policies.

The wingnuts just hate. It’s personal. They hate Chelsea as much as they hate Bill and Hill. If Rush tells them to, they’ll hate Tom Daschle, or France, or the Dixie Chicks, or whoever it is this week. It’s very sick.

3. It is so heartening to see this emotion finally bubbling forth.
Nothing could be better for America than a healthy detestation of this most reprehensible, incompetent pResident.

How long did we suffer in excruciating agony while this master of deceit's ratings soared and people sung his praises and the flag flew from every car, implying love of the USA and George Bush.

If even a significant part of the country finally comes to its senses and starts lambasting this awful son of a bitch for the moron he truly is, then I will, with tears in my eyes, sing of joy for the return of the America I love.

4. yes the talking point for the week: Dems are just haters
for no reason whatsoever except we're just crazy and unreasonable and should never ever be listened to. Say it many many times. Dems just hate Bush, that's all. No reason. Us crazy veggie eating long haired dope smokin love bunnies are simply dangerously full of hate for Bush and all other reasonable patriotic Americans. Haven't you heard? You will. Over and over again. Started yesterday morning. Dems have no issues. Dems have no cause. Just hate hate hate.

Wouldn't you just know the tribe that invented civil rights and the peace movement would obviously abandon all that love crap and insanely unreasonably hate good old honest Christian George? For no reason whatsoever! Why, we ought to be imprisoned for opposing him, don't you think? And hung for the hate. That's what we deserve. For the hate. Because of course Pukes never hated Hillary. They never hated Bill. They were always just the good hearted well meaning victims of that pair of ruthless criminals. I heard Bill personally stole the wallets of every white man in America while Hillary laughed. It's true!

Repeat and repeat and repeat. You'll get used to it.

7. We hate him, we really hate him
A couple of conservatives I've talked to were stunned when they realied that I didn't like Bush, 'You really don't like him???' They love him! They get to live their most wicked fantasies through him. I loathe, detest, despise the right wing's little Chuckie doll. I'm uncomfortable hating anyone, and it hasn't come without a lot of self-examination. Bush has rightfully earned the contempt of anyone who has a conscience.

12. I am proud to be a Bush-hater
If anything, my hatred of Bush has made me realize exactly what I hold dear about this country.

Because I almost left when the Iraq "war" started. I could not stand the fact that my tax dollars were being used to murder thousands of women and children and young conscripts.

I went to my very first political demonstration because of Bush.

I gave a political candidate money for the very first time because of Bush.

Bush has been a powerful motivator among everybody I know.

A mass hatred of Bush is going to wake people up and finally transform this country for the good.

We've been asleep at the wheel for a LONG time.

Because we've TRUSTED. We've trusted our government, and our "press". We've trusted our system.

Because of Bush we've realized that our system is BROKEN.

And the Doctor is in.

21. Just keep repeating the issues - you don't have to hate Bush...
...you just have to point out his failings. Today, I gingerly pointed out to 2 Bush-loving republicans, Bush's failings: the economy, the 9/11 report. Then I said, "Bush has disappointed a lot of people." One of them actually agreed on the 9/11 report, and then said the Patriot Act scared him - that if Hillary Clinton became president, she might take advantage of it.

Then the conversation zoomed off between the 2 of them about how Hillary would never become president, and how bad Clinton was.

Just keep repeating the issues - things that are going wrong.

22. I rarely mention that I despise Shrub.
But, I will happily go on and on about lies, incompetance, arrogance and other things about the most inept administration in US history. Ineptitude only paralleled by Ludwig II and other kings made mad from inbreeding.

Once in a while, however, I might mention,

"Remember how much you hated Clinton?

Well, I actually have REASONS for hating Shrub. I hated him when he was Governor, I hated him when he campaigned, and I hate him now.

Not only does he degrade the office, he isn't even trying to do the job. Not one thing in this country, or perhaps the entire planet, is better than it was before he took over. Nothing is working right, and his only 'accomplishment' was ordering the military to do its job.

You may have hated Clinton for what he was, but I hate Bush for what he is and the utter destruction he is causing and for what he is not doing-- his job.

Until Shrub, in my most terrifying nightmares I never dreamed I would feel nostalgia for Nixon.

And how do you KNOW he hasn't had a blowjob in the Oral Office?"

23. Difference: Clinton: Penis; Bush: Death--who to hate?
Clinton haters hate him personally, wish him dead or worse. I just wish Bush powerless--he can hang out on his golf cart ranch till the guilt comes home---but I and most of us "Bush Haters" hate that he is in office. Not that he lives (Oh Lucianne.com..???)

26. hate not a talking point (at this time)
librechik, Your thinking might not be far off for the future but at least as this program was concerned, I really did not get the feeling that "Dems just hate" was a talking point at this time. Nordlinger was genuinely taken aback and puzzled by the hatred the chimp has engendered.

I thought the comments made by posters on this thread about how people are beginning to hate him is a positive sign. It shows people are beginning to understand how egregiously our rights have been assaulted. It is, IMO, only natural to loathe someone who tries to subject you or take away something that is a right, especially when the people doing the taking do it with subterfuge, signifying that they know full well that what they are doing is abominable.
