Please read and comment on my LTTE |

E.J. Dionne. Jr.’s column in Friday’s Pittsburgh Post-Gazette points to a very disturbing trend within the Republican Party. Although this trend began during the Nixon administration it has finally burst forth in all its viciousness with the inauguration of the current Bush administration. The intolerance of moderates within their own rank and file, the use of intimidation and threats against those who do not tow the party line, questioning the patriotism of anyone who dares to disagree with or question the current administration’s policies, Senator Santorum’s K-Street Strategy, the current administration’s double-speak and it’s insistence on secrecy and executive privilege, and so on testify to the fact that the Grand Old Party of Abraham Lincoln is now the Party of Francisco Franco and Benito Mussolini.
Your comments and suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

2. Nice letter, one minor detail... |

Maybe define the trend when you bring it up so the examples don't have to but instead support the assertion. I'd also probably point out that this trend, as a trend, tends to drag both parties farther to the right overall. You The inference is there but in my experience most people don't get subtlety. But that's just me and were it me I'd define neoconseratism as modern day Trotskysim, belief in perpetual war etc.

6. No kidding, that's the sad part. |

They just don't want to bother to understand historical context or anything at all that doesn't agree. The other night I had a fascinating conversation with an acquaintance who wanted me to know he's some kind of delegate for the puke party in our area. I asked him who the nominee was. Silence.
So then I invited him to a Kerry house party and he said "sure so he can tell us some more lies. I read where he said ribbons in '70 and medals in '92 so he's full of it". I pointed out that they are the same and anybody who's served is pretty clear on that point plus at least he had earned ribbons to start with. Next I asked where he got his news from anyway and he said 'I listen to Rush, can't trust the liberal media'. So I said he ought to go check out newamericancentury.org and learn about what his party was up to since the leaders wrote the plan. Never heard of it. End of conversation, back turned no goodbye. Wah.

One thing I might change to get a conservative editor to publish it: "the Grand Old...is now the Party of Francisco..." to "the once Grand Old...now resembles the party of Francisco..."
