Karmic justice for a racist fraternity

Thursday night, the local Kappa Alpha chapter got a taste of karmic justice. For those of you not familiar with KA, it is an old line southern fraternity. For years and decades, each KA house that hadn't integrated had a Civil War era Confederate cannon on the front lawn. These cannons were a source of great pride. Well, on Thursday night at the KA chapter on the University of Missouri, the cannon was also the source of karmic justice.

Late in the evening, after a goodly amount of alcohol, the local frat boys were igniting fireworks out of the muzzle of the cannon. No harm, no foul. But then some bright boy got the idea to REALLY load the cannon with fireworks. Well, long story short, nobody was hurt, the cannon, symbol of racist pride, was destroyed, the local chapter of KA has had it's charter revoked by the national organization, and the president and vp of the local chapter were tossed into jail for third degree felony assault, unlawful use of a weapon, and first degree property damage.

Nobody was hurt, damage of fairly minimal too. And karmic justice paid a visit to the racist KA house, and it, like it's symbol of racist pride, is no more.

The President and VP of ANY fraternity do not exert ANY FORM OF CONTROL WHATSOEVER on the rest of the brothers. I sincerely hope they were the two who actually committed the crime or this will become a greater tragedy than it already is. Having been a fraternity president myself, you can only do so much to prevent your brotherhood from doing completely retarded things.

A good example from my own experience occurred about 2 weeks after we took pledges. 3 of our new pledges were caught in a large scale drug raid, being small time college marijuana dealers. I had all sorts of hell rained down on me for the actions of 3 kids I hardly even knew at the time! We absolutely kicked their asses out, but what the fuck was I supposed to do about preventing the actions of kids I hardly knew the names of?? How could I have been held responsible in that? And yet, I somehow was. Everything worked out in the end, at least for me, but people don't realize frat presidents have absolutely no power in controlling the actions of 30 19-21 year old boys who can hardly tie their own shoes for themselves.

maybe you should have told the racist pigs (racism is why) to fuck off, and sued them on behalf of the small businessmen/women....

I didn't know that about KAs.

We had a chapter at UNT, but about the only frat that was even tolerable there for me were the Sammys (Sigma Alpha Mus).

Their house burned down several years ago, but before that, it was the center of drugs, decadence and craziness on campus (motorcycles in the trees, etc).

14. I remember the NT KA's

My freshman year there was a big stink because one of their pledges left their book around and it was filled with all sorts of racists screeds, nothing happened from that, but they got kicked off two years later when they went on a rampage through campus singing dixie and flying the confederate flag. The big thing was they started chanting "n*****s go home" at a group of prospective football recruits touring the campus.

4. Kappa Alpha is a sad, racist fraternity

They celebrate everything about the Old South - including slaves.

I was very close to a number of KA brothers at my college - in fact, I was rushed by KA but thankfully found out about their tendencies before it was too late.

These brothers would make it a point to go to a SC Horse Race each year and pay a small black child a few dollars to carry around their coolers for them all day and act as their servants. It was disgusting.

I could go on and on about this group, but suffice it to say that they are despicable. Karmic justice indeed.

7. Did you go to USC? My husband is an alum

He remembers the time when someone put an "A" in front of the KA (changing to the name of an African American sorority). People were always doing that with frat letters, but the KA's were not in the least bit amused. My husband was in a frat at Carolina (the unpopular fraternity for all the geeky brainy guys), but I really don't remember the name.

That said, I was in a major fraternity and it is ignorant to pin the actions of a few idiots on the entire house.

not just action of a few idiots. Talk to anyone from any Southern college or University that had KAs around and they will recount similar racist stories to the ones you and I have shared.

Now, the incident with the cannon is simply an idiotic action by a few stupid brothers, but the racism and intolerance of KAs is part of their reason for being.
