How does demanding a cabinet member's resignation help us? |
|
Edited on Thu May-06-04 12:15 PM by wuushew
Every time key personnel quit or get fired the issues behind what ever scandal surfaced remain but the publicity fades. What prominent and scandalous news out of the Treasury Department has surfaced since the departure of Treasury Secretary Paul O'Neill and White House Economic Advisor Lawrence Lindsay?
Has the E.P.A. stopped enacting anti-environmental actions since Christie Todd Whitman resigned? I don't think so since Bush is going full speed ahead to poison us with mercury.
Getting rid of Tenet would not help, because he would serve as a useful scapegoat for BushCo in addition to the fact that Freepers already hate him as a Clinton appointee.
Finally on the subject of Rummy. The fact that things are getting so fucked up in Iraq hurts Bush's election chances. Replacing Rummy before November might win him some votes with his base and swing voters. They would see as a responsible step that BushCo has taken to correct mistakes the administration has made.
As the opposition don't we want as many lightening rods as possible? Better that these people remain where they are in order to sink Bush than be replaced and provide the cosmetic appearance of repair.

1. Calling for the resignation is a start but... |
|
what these guys should be saying is "Send him to the Hague" and "Give him a Cell next to Milosovich"

7. Unless something illegal was done all responsibility flows to the top |
|
Rummy works for the POTUS and even considering the two Presidents who where impeached no President has ever been removed from office or served time for crimes committed while in office in the 215 year history of the United States.
To demand prosecution of high officials brings the prospect that those who voted for Bush made a horrible horrible mistake. Considering that Nixon enjoyed 30% popularity on the eve of his resignation shows how screwed up this country is. Given the inevitable closeness of the election I would rather invoke a sense of shame than partisan(although justified) vindictiveness.

12. What about classifying the document as secret |
|
to cover up the criminal activity?
That wasn't a stock boy, that order came from the very top.
Not to mention all the other ways Rummy's bad decsions have put our troops more in harm's way than they would have been otherwise.
Also, we won't know how widespread it is until we get rid of the obfuscaters like Rumsfeld who said he won't even answer questions that contain the word "torture" and that is exactly what those troops have engaged in -- torture.
We here at DU, support the troops.

3. I think it shows that the administration is falling apart |
|
and who wants to elect a guy to run the country if he can't even handle his own administration.
The cracks are building and it is becoming public knowledge. I am just patiently waiting for the dam to burst.

4. Being forced to resign is an embarrassment to the administration. |
|
Especially under conditions like this. It taints the entire administration. If he doesn't resign, people may think "oh, I guess he wasn't at fault." If he does resign, that places FAULT on him.

6. The only resignation that would really help us |
|
would be Powell, the darling of the "moderate" republicans.
Other than that, I agree with you.

9. The reason firing Rummy would help is his responsibility |
|
I posted this on Du before....Rummy declared these prisoners enemy combatents so they do not fall under the rules of the Geneva convention. If they would have been considered POW's it would be different.
If Rummy & Bush hadn't made this "Enemy Combatent" catagory, this mess might not exist. Therefore I think his dismissal would be a more powerful blow to the administration.

10. It would be a victory for the Democrats... |
|
Let's say you're a Freeper/Fundie and believe Bush (as he believes himself) was chosen by God to lead the US...
Bush selects Rummy for his cabinet...
Then this scandal breaks...
Congressional Democrats call for Rummy's resignation...Bush refuses. As a F/F, you feel Bush's "integrity and morality" remains strong; a beacon for the rest of us...
The scandal proves too embarrassing and damaging...Bush's handler$$$ are telling him to let Rummy go. Victory in November is too important and overshadows "integrity and morality."
Bush accepts Rummy's resignation, and the Democrats are remembered as the ones who initially called on his resignation...
So, as a F/F, you're outraged with Bush for having given in to the Democrats. In essence, you see that Bush has clay feet, has upset God, and has no real "integrity and morality" if he lets the Dems push him around.
So, a valuable core Bush constituency is shaken...
It's more a propaganda victory for the Dems, but nonetheless, a victory...
