Under those conditions, the behavior cannot constitute anything other than 1st Degree Rape - to call it "having sex" is like describing someone being clubbed to death as "mild fisticuffs"

How much is enough to end popular support for this war????

The military as many of us know it, is compromised of many fine people, who were not asked to go to war but were ordered to do so, were ordered to go wage an illegal war and lied to.

The fine people I know will not let this horror be blamed on 6 junior soldiers, some of whom barely had one stripe, when it was a systemic problem coming from the top. Nor will they sit by quietly as the neo-cons hang the military out to dry.

And I hate to break it to Bush, his supporters, and his apologists but Military Intelligence isn't stupid. They didn't orchestrate this crap and happen to be smart enough to sink Bush and his entire ship; they won't be Bush's fall-guys nor will the CIA which already hates his guts. So what if they have to hang a few of their own out to dry- they won't care because they're probably as ashamed of their own who "just followed orders" as we all are.

Hey Georgie-boy, KMA because you're going down, down, down. There's not a soldier in MI whose IQ isn't higher than yours.

78. Kennedy was misquoted, or he doesn't get it
"But Sen. Edward Kennedy, D-Mass., called on Bush to fire Rumsfeld and replace him with Secretary of State Colin Powell. Powell, who was chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff during the first Gulf War, knows how to win a war in Iraq, Kennedy said."

What is needed now is somebody who knows how to get out of a war, not how to win it. This is not winnable now, if it ever was. I don't think it ever was.

131. I mentioned this in a conversation with my mom last night.
She wasn't paying a lot of attention because she has relatives visiting from out of town. I mentioned that I was watching the hearings about all the prisoner torture. She brought up - well, they burned those four Americans' bodies and just did horrible things to them. I responded: "well, Mom, the Red Cross and Amnesty International were trying to get to the bottom of this last summer, and there were rumors about this all over the place. How do we know that the killings of the mercenaries weren't IN RESPONSE to all this?" She then mumbled something about "well, I don't know..."

It sure makes more sense to me. More sense by the day.

DUers PLEASE NOTE:

WHEN you call your reps - ESPECIALLY ANY republi-CONS - you MUST, repeat MUST word your complaint such that: "...this is being done in MY name. This (to staffer who's taking your call) is being done in YOUR name. This is being done in (Senator's/Congressmember's) name, too."

I have made this a habit in the last week or so, when I've called. THEY HAVE NO COMEBACK FOR THIS. Even in "enemy territory" offices where I've called before, where some young Hitler Youth type tries to get belligerent or sassy with me, they have NO COMEBACK for this. Most of 'em, as I have personally discovered, don't have a comeback at all anymore. The ones I've called have been MOST subdued and not at all confrontational. Every one of them. EVERY single one. I think they know this is BIG trouble, and that there's NO way and NO good reason to rebut those who call in genuine anguish about this.

It's a point we absolutely NEED to drive home. OVER AND OVER AND OVER AND OVER.

And you can do it TOLL FREE...

Thank god we are in the digital age and these reptiles don't really understand how that factors into the game. This has been going on for decades, it's just that in the past it was so much easier for them to hide their misdeeds. That's why Rummie kept ranting and raving about digital cameras. If he could he would destroy every digital camera in the world, but it's too late, we've already crossed the Rubicon (figuratively and literally).

31. No, it's Lindsey Graham.
A few minutes later, Graham told a press conference, “We’re talking about rape and murder here, we’re not just talking abut giving people a humiliating experience, we’re talking about rape and murder and some very serious charges.”

Worried about the propaganda effect of a Rumsfeld resignation, Graham said that although Rumsfeld “failed us,” it would risk sending the wrong signal to the enemy and “empower them” if he were forced to quit.

Of course, they're in FULL panic mode and can't keep their lies straight. No time to coordinate because they never understood the power of "digital cameras on the battlefield" and this scandal is snow-balling faster than they can think.

Hate to break it to them. Lynndie England is not the true culprit here; she was merely a willing instrument of their evil. Oh no... the buck does not stop with Lynndie England, 2 NCOs, a few specialists and a handful of Privates. Whoops, and a Brigadier General thrown in for the show.

I hate to repeat cynical humor but one DUer I like did say that it's time to grab some pop-corn, sit back and watch the show. The show has only just begun, the finger pointing is only now beginning. The boys are going DOWN, down. I am only sorry that it's coming at the price of so much suffering.

128. Nuremberg II

CBS asked to delay report?
May 7: Sen. Mark Dayton, D-Minn., asked Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld and Gen. Richard Myers if CBS was contacted and asked to delay its news report on the abuse of Iraqi prisoners.

<snip>

Gen. Richard Myers, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, asks CBS-TV to delay airing photographs it has obtained of abuse at Abu Ghraib. Myers says the photos would exacerbate an intense period of violence under way in Iraq. CBS delays its program for two weeks.

<snip>

May 2
Myers admits on ABC’s "This Week" that he has not yet read the Taguba report issued in March.

<snip>

Sen. Carl Levin, D-Mich., noted with “deep dismay” that Rumsfeld and Gen. Richard Myers, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, had briefed the panel about Iraq in a classified session last week but did not mention the scandal, which the government knew was about to break in the news media.

Myers, for his part, acknowledged that he had called Dan Rather of CBS News to ask that the network delay broadcasting the photographs on “60 Minutes II,” saying he did so to protect U.S. troops from retaliation. Myers and Rumsfeld then got into a heated discussion with Sen. Mark Dayton, D-Minn., who said such action had no place in a democracy, to which Rumsfeld responded that there were precedents.

<snip>

Myers testified that an investigation of four prisons under the command of the unit in charge of Abu Ghraib had not turned up other problems. But the Army’s own probe, an executive summary of which was obtained by NBC News ((Complete text of Article 15-6 Investigation of the 800th Military Police Brigade by Maj. Gen. Antonio M. Taguba}}, detailed numerous instances of abuse at Camp Bucca, the U.S. detention center in Umm Qasr in southern Iraq.

it will send the message to the world that in a democracy, when the executives in power commit crimes, they are brought to justice.

It will send a message to the world that America is strong and in a democracy you can have a peaceful change of leadership and that America can survive this national nightmare.

Lindsey should remember he took an oath to protect and defend the USA, not George W. Bu$h.

Those chilling words are from the MSNBC article.

The worst is yet to come.

In context:
Answering a question many lawmakers have posed, Red Cross Operations Director Pierre Kraehenbuehl said the abuse went beyond a few soldiers and detainees held at Abu Ghraib. “We were dealing here with a broad pattern, not individual acts,” he said. “There was a pattern and a system.”

I never ever thought we would relive this shame. I'm not naive, not uninformed, but I am outraged that this is happening under our watch. We stand for & deserve better than this.

Truly, I would like us to have our own country and let the Freepers & Neo-cons live in their own separate country. They do not represent us, how DARE they use our collective name like this?

they did not have digital cameras and the internet.

Now they can't hide their atrocities anymore. The images will not go away and there are more coming. The US and the rest of planet have some major issues to deal with in the next few months - years. I am hopeful that by the time we get through this crisis, the world will start to become a better place because we certainly can not continue to treat each other like this.

Reservist Charged With Abuse Speaks Out

By Jackie Spinner
Washington Post Staff Writer
Friday, May 7, 2004; 7:11 PM

There were no rules, by her account, and little training. But the mission was clear. Spec. Sabrina Harman, a military police officer charged with abusing detainees at the Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq, said she was assigned to break down prisoners for interrogation.

"They would bring in one to several prisoners at a time already hooded and cuffed," Harman said in interviews by e-mail this week from Baghdad. "The job of the MP was to keep them awake, make it hell so they would talk."

Harman, one of six military police reservists charged with abusing detainees at the prison, is the second of those soldiers to speak publicly about her time at Abu Ghraib, and her comments echo findings of the Army's investigation into prisoner abuse there. That probe documented the maltreatment of detainees shown in now-famous photographs, and it found the prison was chaotically run, that there were no apparent rules governing interrogations, and that Harman's military police unit was ill-trained for the job it was asked to perform.

She said her military police unit took direction from the military intelligence officers in charge of the facility and from civilian contractors there who conducted interrogations. She didn't discuss the abusive treatment of prisoners, who ordered abusive treatment of prisoners, or any questions about the charges against her.

Harman's face is now famous as belonging to one of the soldiers who posed in a widely published photograph showing naked Iraqi detainees stacked in a pyramid. The picture is one of several that have inflamed the Arab World and brought condemnation from President Bush and other American political and military leaders.

She also is charged with striking several detainees by jumping on a pile of detainees, writing "rapeist" on a prisoner's leg and with attaching wires to a prisoner's hands while he stood on a box with his head covered, according to Army charging documents. She is accused of then telling him if he fell off the box he would be electrocuted.

In the interview, Harman, 26, said detainees were handed over to her Military Police unit by Military Intelligence officers or by the civilian contractors. Prisoners were stripped, searched and then "made to stand or kneel for hours," Harman said. Sometimes they were forced to stand on boxes or hold boxes or to exercise to tire them out, she said.

"The person who brought them in would set the standards on whether or not to 'be nice,' " she said.

A longer version of this article will be posted on washingtonpost.com after 11 p.m. EDT tonight.

107. I think that politics are central to this whole atrocity.
The Bush administration is a Republican administration. The Bush administration clearly ordered systemic torture of prisoners, as part of the Bush administration's invasion and subsequent occupation of another country.

This is totally politics. Get the Republicans out of the White House and out of Congress.

82. Isn't it the fact that your military and government are evil degenerates?
Oh excuse me they are not 100% evil degenerates there are just some "bad apples" It's just some of your public shouting "torture them" and "some of your commentators" calling atrocities "pranks". There has been no remorse from any of the photographed "perps" because they were only following orders and it is "unjust" to blame them.

Everyone else involved is brave and good and true (even those mercenary war criminals, excuse me "contractors" who kindly came to help out with the killing)and those brave soldiers who bombed and and shot civilians 1000 civilians (including many children) last week were "serving their country". Anyone who refused to torture and murder helpless prisoners is a "hero" by American standards. And only about 120 million Americans still support the illegal invasion based on lies and the occupation that causes in excess of 1000 Iragi deaths per month. How could I ever have imagined that there was a serious problem? It's a storm in a teacup really just a few people have done some bad things.

110. FWIW--maybe the troops are completely in the dark
Edited on Sat May-08-04 07:53 AM by NJCher
This account was given to me by a student who has a cousin in the army in Iraq, south of Baghdad.

This last week I had a conversation with a student while I was finishing some work in the computer lab. While very interesting, I didn't post this earlier because I had problems with the logic. But in context with what we're learning here, maybe it's true.

The student told me his cousin told him that there are pics of GWB all over the barracks of the soldiers. The cousin (btw, my student's family is Democratic) said it is like a cult. The pics of GWB are of him in the Topgun suit giving the thumbs up (hmm, where else have we seen that?)

And who would have reproduced and distributed such a massive amount of posters? Who would "think" like that?

He said the troops are kept completely in the dark and they know nothing. They did not even know the torture story had broken in the states. Most important, he said, they think there IS a connection between Iraqis and 9/11. They actually think they're over fighting the people who did 9/11.

Why I didn't post this info earlier is that I have read posts here that say they view Fox. Fox is certainly covering this, although I have not myself watched it.

But maybe there are some bases where nothing gets through. I would put nothing past the mind manipulators we have in the WH now.

Cher

73. Under the Genocide Convention
Rape has been introduced as a weapon of genocide and a War Crime

It is just that most Americans cannot face the idea that WE have, to a degree, enambled it... when this is over nobody will be a Repub or a Bush Suporter...

75. The DOD plays Rush CystAss radio programs over there 24/7
He spews Hate and more than a few are affected by the constant brain washing.

We have need to either get some balance or make waves to rid the DOD from playing his programs.

WE all know its a set up by the WH to garner more votes from the troops. Now they reaping what they sow, Hate. This will backfire and escalate this conflict into something where the WHOLE PLANET loses. But the myopic Bush cannot see the damage of his policies which includes this Rush thingy being played on the DOD radio for the troops.

81. Assuming this is correct
you realize that Rush is now liable to prosecution?

Remember that wonderful broadcaster in Rwanda who basically pushed
hate to tutsis to incredible levels?

He was convicted by the Special War Crimes Tribunal for Rwanda...

Hey it could happen, and will make money laundering and drug abuse look like a walk in the park for Rush... nothing like adding War Crimes to his collection huh?

As Evan Bayh said : "Our cause is morally superior."

He and Joe Lieberman must have made some fans in Freeperville today.

100. If in doubt about how bad it is
in Iraq check out Riverbend's blog. She has been to me a voice from the ordinary Iraqi citizen.
"People are so angry. There’s no way to explain the reactions- even pro-occupation Iraqis find themselves silenced by this latest horror. I can’t explain how people feel- or even how I personally feel. Somehow, pictures of dead Iraqis are easier to bear than this grotesque show of American military technique. People would rather be dead than sexually abused and degraded by the animals running Abu Ghraib prison.

There was a time when people here felt sorry for the troops. No matter what one's attitude was towards the occupation, there were moments of pity towards the troops, regardless of their nationality. We would see them suffering the Iraqi sun, obviously wishing they were somewhere else and somehow, that vulnerability made them seem less monstrous and more human. That time has passed. People look at troops now and see the pictures of Abu Ghraib… and we burn with shame and anger and frustration at not being able to do something. Now that the world knows that the torture has been going on since the very beginning, do people finally understand what happened in Falloojeh?"

133. I like this one - it isn't a stain, it's a catastrophe!
"He's (Bush) claiming it's a "stain on our country's honor"... I think not. The stain on your country's honor, Bush dear, was the one on the infamous blue dress that made headlines while Clinton was in the White House... this isn't a 'stain' this is a catastrophe. Your credibility was gone the moment you stepped into Iraq and couldn't find the WMD... your reputation never existed."

She got it right on the money.

134. My favorite Freeper post:
Get a load of this poor deluded bastard:

But I'm really proud of our President and Secretary Rumsfeld for standing up as men to be honest and deal with it. We have the most honest, God-fearing, compassionate leaders on this earth. If they do a few things to de-feminize our military, I'll be even more proud of them.
