Why aren't we doing more to blast conservative values?
- Why aren't we doing to the right what they wrongly did to us?
- Why aren't we calling them on perverting the military?
- Why aren't we declaring that the depravity in Iraq is a symptom of conservative values that are more concerned with what liberals are up to than the rights of man?
- Where are the liberal ministers to blast the corruption of American values brought on by the evils of conservativism?
- Why aren't there attacks on Pat Robertson and Jerry Falwell for being so quiet in the face of this depravity?
- Why aren't we fighting for political correctness, when clearly the incorrectness of the right helped foster this depravity?
- Why aren't we calling Rush Limbaugh the devil's disciple for trying to defend the depravity in Iraq?
- Why aren't we talking about the perverse conservatives whose weird take on sexuality is leading to the kind of sadism we see in Iraq?
- We aren't we talking about the correlation between conservative repression of our freedoms and the incidence of sadism in the military?
- Why aren't we taking Faux news and others to task for reality shows that create the sort of voyeurism that turns humiliation into entertainment?

The right-wing has too much control right now over all our sources of information, and they're increasing that control more and more. I don't know what we can do about it.

1. It is virtually impossible to attack something that doesn't exist...
Conservative values? If you can define them, maybe we can formulate some argument. I don't know what they are, aside from their demonization of everything I hold dear. When 'values' are based in hypocrisy, they cannot be attacked. What conservatives 'profess' to believe, and what they practice to demonstrate their beliefs, are two entirely different things, so you cannot pin them down and ask, 'how does what you just did exemplfy your stated values?'

2. Great questions
We need to get our act in gear. I can only imagine what the conservative reaction would have been if any such activity would have been tolerated under President Clinton. He would have been impeached in the House by now, you know.

4. They defined liberalism for us ...
We can do the same for conservatism. They persuaded the American people that liberals want big government, government handouts, the right to discriminate against white people, and so on. It's about time we tried to reciprocate.

7. Response to both of the above posts...
I don't know what the answer is, but I do know that we will not have an opportunity to define the neoconservatives until one of two things happens. Either the liberals retake the legislature during the next election cycle, or the occupation (I refuse to call this invasion a war without a declaration of same from the congress) has to take such a downturn in costs, both human and economic, that Americans are forced to actually think (GASP!, what a concept, I must be one of those damned left wing academics that's trying to corrupt the youth of America, ship me to GITMO!) about the consequences of our willful ignorance and incuriosity.

Um...I want all three of those. I think we need them all to right many wrong in society. Do most liberals NOT want these things? I hope I'm not in the wrong party.

3. Who is this "we"...
Edited on Sat May-08-04 08:33 AM by LeahMira
Whenever I read one of these "why aren't WE doing something" kinds of posts on DU, I think, "why aren't YOU doing something."

You are right on target, and I really don't mean to diss you at all.

I've seen several letters to the editor in the newspaper I read and I've heard several callers to our local talk radio that are saying some of the same kinds of things that you are.

I've also seen some "fire Rumsfeld" e-mail campaigns which I support, but I also wish those campaigns had started before everything hit the fan. Clearly, Rumsfeld is the wrong man for the job, and those photos of him shaking Saddam's hand are more than enough to put his reputation and his judgement into question. But that's another thread.

I'm not sure I agree with all the dots you've connected, but certainly the statement about "reality TV" makes a lot of sense. So do a few others.

So, why don't YOU do something? There's lots of ways that people can make their voices heard, and the way you connected some of the dots is good and those points should be made.

Maybe what we need is to say what each of us has done already, to share ideas with one another.

I think people in the U.S. are suffering from an excess sense of powerlessness. Indeed we can make changes. Some of us do need to know where to begin, though. Still, I hardly ever see a letter to the editor that isn't backed up by another letter very much like it, either the same day or shortly after. There's criticism too, but it takes one person to start things moving.

Tell me what you've done and I'll see if I can't do the same thing... OK?

Here's a start for getting ideas...

5. I mean "we" as a group
I do at least some things to try to help the situation--money to causes, am outspoken online, and have written letters to the editor. The problem is we are not being heard. We don't have a single voice or a way of getting heard on tv or radio. None of our leaders are attacking conservatives values, at least in a way that gets any real media attention. We don't have a Rush Limbaugh, a Matt Drudge, or Fox News. We don't have someone to rile the right the way they can rile us. I don't know what the answer is.

OK! "We" in my household don't have much extra cash, but I work and I send a little money here and there also. Thanks to your good talking points, I do have some material for a letter to the editor, which I'll write today. Promise!

Well, you and I can't get a radio or TV station... unless I'm underestimating your connections! But let's do the things we can do.

6. Writing now
I actually started my letter to the editor of the DSM Register as soon as I read this post. Hopefully it will be published while this scandal still exists.

9. They don't have values.
At least not what ordinary people would call VALUES.

10. Why?
Because we are too busy smashing each other. Or America. Or Kerry. Or rednecks. Or Southerners. Or Yankees. Or ... take your pick.

Recent events once again point out the real differences between Dems and Pukes. I don't care what Nader might have said.

11. They are being blasted by Seymour Hersh, Paul Drugman, Molly Ivins
Bill Moyers, and a host of other journalist too numerous to list. Taking on the executive branch is no easy task. Goes to show how much power junior does indeed have. Karl Rove knows how to manipulate the media.

Give 'em time, things will change, and I do hope so before we're a third world country.

Here are some powerful links to Mr. Hersh's recent stories.

12. We need more analytical thinking looking for the answers, many of which
are somewhat simplistic, like alert the family/friends and register to vote Bush and the Pubs outta there. But they are the start.

The root of the problem seems to lie in the direction of Brainwashing and its effects. Americans have been slowly brainwashed and now we see the effects, support for an obviously inept president.

We need Brain rinsing, not brain washing.
