Senators oppose marriage
U.S. Sen. Zell Miller (D-Ga.) is currently the only Democrat in the Senate to co-sponsor the Federal Marriage Amendment.

Miller, who is retiring, signed onto the FMA on Feb. 9. Three days later, he denounced gay marriage in folksy floor speech that likened growing support for gay-inclusive legislation to the Super Bowl’s “now-infamous halftime show” as evidence of a “deficit of decency” in America.

2. a couple of questions about Zell

(1) is there ANYTHING on which Zell agrees with his party anymore? Or is he a straight-ticket Rethug on every and all issues?

(2) Is he a Dixiecrat who just never got around to defecting to the GOP like Strom Thurmond, Trent Lott and Jesse Helms did (yes, they were all originally in the Democratic Party, before the parties' political realignments in the 60s)? Or was he once a somewhat liberal person who just lost his marbles and drifted rightward as he got older?

Both. Or neither. Who knows? He was once Chief of Staff for the notorious Lester Maddox. By the 90s, he was making big noises as a progressive populist, excoriating Republicans for their divisiveness and cynicism. Now, it looks like he's come full circle. And the larger arc of his reactionary/liberal/reactionary trek is littered with instances of him confounding his supporters with inexplicably contrarian stances, thumbing them in the eye for no good reason. That's why he's called Zig Zag Zell.
