Was watching Colin Powell on Larry King after Rummy's Senate/House testimony. King asked Powell if he was still going to release his annual Human Rights Report. Powell fidgeted, but said, "Sure -- why not? Um...Yeah. Of course. It will be released tomorrow."
They went to commercial. When they returned, Powell's deputy Richard Armitage (Cheney's man at State) had called in to say they were NOT going to release the report "at this time. Maybe later..."
Colin (I'm not in charge here) Powell looked embarrassed and stammered that he "hadn't gotten the word -- but whatever Dick Armitage says is what we will do. I have a lot of confidence in Armitage," Powell gulped...
Today, we
find out State probably won't be releasing a Human Rights Report
at all this year. Wouldn't be "prudent," dontcha know...
U.S. Ashamed to Release Annual 'Human Rights Report'
May 8, 2004The photos of Iraqi prisoners being tortured by U.S. Marines has so disgraced the American administration that it decided to postpone the publishing of its annual international human rights report.
The U.S., which releases annual international human rights reports, is skipping the tradition this year because of the images of torture in Iraq. The New York Times wrote in yesterday's edition that the U.S. is holding off on publishing the report so that the world public would not ridicule it.

The U.S. Secretary of Defense also disclosed that there are many other unpublished photos that show acts of torture and humiliation. He added that there are also video records of the incidents.
When Rumsfeld was asked about the calls for his resignation, he replied that he would not resign because people are trying to turn this into a political issue.

Meanwhile, American police officers that had previously worked at Abu Gharib prison disclosed that they have witnessed other torture cases that have not reported so far. They also said that the abuse is widespread.
