Poll question: Evaluate Yourself Politically
Edited on Wed Jul-09-03 06:31 PM by Gringo
I am...

(Just wondering, since I see so many posts representing such a completely NON-democrat mentality)

2. I'm considering asking the mods to delete this
I've seen nothing in the posts here to indicate that high a percentage of leftists. I'm afraid the temptation for freepers to freep this one is irresistable. They can link their freeper friends here and go "Duh, look, Clem, DU is nothin' but commies! Har Har! Duh!"

I guess I'll have to.

21. Why? I voted #1.
Could have done with #2 but since I'm actually a member of both the Democratic Party and the SPUSA I figured "Leftist" is pretty accurate.

I can recal at least a dozen DU regulars the have labelled themselves as Socialists.

41. Looks normally distributed to me
Left of center, it's a bell-shaped curve. Looks like political opinion of the left-leaning variety is normally distributed around here.

They're only about 1/3 or so of the responses. Although even if they were half or 2/3 - so what?

9. I've alerted the mods and left it in their hands whether or not to delete
The "leftist" votes were leading big-time at first, so I put in the freeper qualifier on #1.

The mods are better judges than myself as to whether this poll could become some kind of anti-DU tool.

Too bad polls don't require honesty.

I'm moderate on economic issues, very libertarian on social issues, and am a moderate interventionist with foreign policy. I'm also a Dean volunteer, if that matters.

13. Of course it's only my opinion, but
People who want a flat tax, and large cuts in all government services, and couldn't give a flying fig whether unions are destroyed and jobs are sent overseas, that's pretty un-democratic.

But it's also as seen through the prism of my own mind's eye.

Edited on Wed Jul-09-03 06:30 PM by TheBigGuy
I think that would be the Greens. Pro-labor would be "FDR is My Man"

Interesting way of looking at the spectrum...except for mixing "pro labor' w. "green" its fairly accurate.

I think this does pretty much reflect this site.

25. liberal/conservative , authoritarian/libertarian
Edited on Wed Jul-09-03 10:34 PM by Pikku
I have had a hard time with the liberal/conservative continuum since I took a quiz that ranked you not only left/right but also authoritarian/libertarian. As a result, you could end up in one of four camps, not two. Here is the test I took. I came out lib/lib.

I found that the liberal/authoritarian type (at its most extreme, Stalin, Mao and Lenin) was as alien to me as the conservative/libertarian (Ayn Rand, PJ O'Rourke) type . This places me in an awkward position vis a vis political polls like the one above. I think it also explains much of the split I see in the Dem party.

Maybe we could start using two axes instead of one to identify ourselves and each other. This may help us understand what we're up against, both in our own party and in the opposition.

Just a thought.

30. Two or Three
I could be number two or three, so I voted for three because it had fewer votes. Now I'll start my workday pondering the possiblity that choosing the one that had fewer votes rather going with the crowd is depressingly symbolic of why we win fewer elections than we should. :o

31. I ended up voting #1
I'm somewhere in the #1-#2 spectrum. Definitely pro-labor, anti-WTO, becoming more anti-capitalist as I get older and learn more, strongly believe in public ownership of utilities, including telephone and cable, public transportation, socialized medicine, public schools. (all are Socialist programs), I am an internationalist, and think of myself as a citizen of the world community. Have always been a member of the Democratic Party and hold a minor elective office. I ended up voting #1.

Edited on Thu Jul-10-03 08:17 AM by mrfrapp
You've revealed your prejudice by lumping Socialists, Marxists and
Communists into the same category. This is grossly misleading. To
add insult to injury, you've decided that anyone who would vote in
this category must be a freeper.

I'll post the obligatory link to the Political Compass. A poll of sorts that doesn't pigeon hole people.

37. You're wrong on both points
I have no prejudice against socialists, marxists, et. al. When I started the poll, choice # 1 was winning by leaps and bounds, disproportionately to the postings at DU, and I think it's likely there was a freeper contingent who would like to use the poll to say "See! They're all commies!" Which is what they also do with anti-war prostests.

The fact is that the number of registered voters in those parties is miniscule, and thus considered fringe by the bulk of the population. There is also the misconsception that all communist ideals can be boiled down to the Stalinist Soviet Union. I'm sorry that society still has bugaboos about the far left, but they do.

This poll is more for entertainment than for anything else. It may have some accuracy as to the leanigs of DUers that do polls, but that's it. And all DUers taking the test (which I've taken) would do nothing to provide a snapshot of DU membership. Of course, you could make a poll, and people could choose the range in which they tested, if you like.

This is a democratic board. I don't see why you should be angry about this. I didn't have to include the far left at all. And I'm sure that a lot of those choosing #1 are not freepers, but that first burst of votes, before I put the qualifier made me very suspicious.

38. Social Democrat -- had to vote with the Marxists - try Political Compass
Never let yourself be governed by an undemocratic government.

Never let your government ignore its social repsonsiblities.

You can set up economies lots of ways, just don't mess with democracy and human dignity. If some kind of centrally managed economy or some libertarian style wonderland is the best system, I'm open to ideas. Just remember it has to work in real life.

What will happen to an information economy, with no way to control information because of freedom of speach? Well my guess is that captialism will end there.

http://www.politicalcompass.org/
Check this test out. It makes a lot of sense looking at political postions in two dimensions (social, economic).

But FDR wouldn't really be considered liberal nowadays, he'd be seen as a moderate. Social security and govt regulation of the economy isn't as radical as it was when FDR was President.

42. Left-leaning liberal here
I'm not a socialist-I don't believe that the collective good should automatically cancel out individual rights. I have a coworker who is a socialist and we are forever arguing about issues like drug testing, which she feels is important to protect society.
I'm also a FDR liberal, too, who believes that the power of good government can help create a better society.

43. I picked #1, too.
As a Canadian, in many ways, I'm already further left than you guys are just as a matter of course. Our right-wingers aren't as far right as your right-wingers, I think, although once you get that far, the gradations between charcoal, midnight blue, and black get pretty hard to distinguish, so to speak.

If asked, I'd probably tell you that I'm a libertarian (small-l) socialist: I believe in personal freedom, but I also believe that the group collectively has responsibilities to its members. Unlike many large-L Libertarian types, I'm not (as they've told me I am) a "tyrrany of the majority" type; I believe that unchecked majoritarianism is just as dangerous as the other extreme. With Canadian Chief Justice Beverly McLauchlan (private gloat moment: CCJ is a woman!), I think " overlooks the need to accommodate and validate minoritarian views essential to long-term democratic stability ... Unchecked majoritarianism is impractical because it confers unchecked power."

I'm a fiscally conservative (balanced budget is important, either by cutting things like the military or raising taxes), socially progressive(GO SOCIAL PROGRAMS!!!), and generally Libertarian on civil rights issues (keep the government out of our wombs, gun and medicine cabinets, and humidors).

I don't know where exactly that puts me....but hey, who needs to be labeled??? ;-)
