I'd pick cans out of the trash for a living before I did that (though I currently have no worries about having to do so -- my workplace's politics are like my own).

But I'd keep my mouth shut about it at work. Around most people that's the best way to be anyway.

3. Good Question - I Would Not Change, Though I Might Let Others Believe |

Whatever they wanted.
One can wear many masks. It only matters in the voting booth and your personal life.

It sure seems to me that they changed their ideological philosophy just to stay in existence..

Now that I know why you asked...
No, it generally is counterproductive to lie about what you believe. Sometimes you have to be vague just to get by until you have a chance to get another job though.
If NPR is changing, it will lose its audience and eventually lose any justification for its existence. Still, those of us who appreciate an alternative voice need to support it. There are many in Congress who feel that the government's responsibilities do not extend so far as to provide public support for anything that could be privatized.

5. Well, does it count that... |
|
I have to appear to be either apolitical or give the impression to be vaguely-sort-of-not-terribly-different-from-the-others?
Then again, I'm in west Texas. I enjoy being alive never mind being employed.

8. I would give the appearance my ideology had changed |

in order to save my job.
Feeding, clothing, and keeping a roof over my family's heads are all more important than giving the appearance of being a liberal.

but it didn't matter. My equal treatment of all students and my commitment to justice might as well have been sirens. I was easily labeled with the Scarlet L (Liberal)!
Meanwhile, the rightwing freaks with GO GOD 1 on their license plates were the darlings of the district.

Obviously, a lot of the customer base were Freepers. I kept the phone calls to business, and wouldn't let these people go down the political roads, because I would not have been able to restrain myself.
When the company wanted me to sign a birthday card to Randy Tate, then the head of the "Christian" Coalition, that's where I drew the line.

15. Short term, yes. Long term, no. |
|
Anyone who says reflexively that they would not change their ideology to keep their job is not being entirely truthful. It's similar to say that if you don't believe in war, you must immediately stop paying taxes -- few people are willing to go that far for their principles.
In the short term, I will readily admit that I would sacrifice my ideology for the purpose of employment. As much as I believe in cooperation and working together, everyone has a certain amount of self-preservation to consider. Additionally, those of us with families have spouses and/or kids to consider as well.
However, anyone who would sacrifice what they believe over the long term for the purposes of employment is demonstrating that their principles really don't mean too much to them.

and I've been working for 30 years. I haven't always agreed with my bosses/supervisors politically but always managed to work through it to find common ground. At one time I even worked for a man who served on both the Florida and National Republican Finance Committee.

18. Why do you think I can't keep a job? |
|
I have decided I'm pathologically unable to dissemble.
First of all, I couldn't work for an employer that openly held a worldview contrary to mine. I couldn't work for ExxonMobil or WalMart (did that, gag, gag, but only because I didn't KNOW how bad they were).
But second of all, I can't even work for sleezeball bosses without opening my mouth and getting into trouble. Never mind that what I say is the TRUTH; I've gone so far as to present the VP of the company with evidence that the boss is stealing and they just accuse me of petty meanness and. . . . .
